Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum (14,13-21)
In illo tempore: Cum audisset Iesus mortem loánnis Baptistæ secéssit inde in navícula in locum desértum seórsum; et cum audíssent, turbæ secútæ sunt eum pedéstres de civitátibus. Et éxiens vidit turbam multam et misértus est eórum et curávit lánguidos eórum. Véspere autem facto, accessérunt ad eum discípuli dicéntes: “Desértus est locus, et hora iam prætériit; dimítte turbas, ut eúntes in castélla emant sibi escas.” Iésus autem dixit eis: “Non habent necésse ire; date illis vos manducáre.” Illi autem dicunt ei: “Non habémus hic nisi quinque panes et duos pisces.” Qui ait: “Afférte illos mihi huc.” Et cum iussísset turbas discúmbere supra fenum, accéptis quinque pánibus et duóbus píscibus, aspíciens in cælum benedíxit et fregit et dedit discípulis panes, discípuli autem turbis. Et manducavérunt omnes et saturáti sunt; et tulérunt relíquias fragmentórum duódecim cóphinos plenos. Manducántium autem fuit númerus fere quinque mília virórum, excéptis muliéribus et párvulis.
At that time: Jesus, having heard of the death of John the Baptist, he retired from thence by boat, into a desert place apart, and the multitudes having heard of it, followed him on foot out of the cities. And he coming forth saw a great multitude, and pitied them, and cured their diseased. And when it was evening, his Disciples came unto him, saying: It is a desert place, and the hour is now past: dismiss the multitudes, that going into the towns, they may buy themselves victuals. But Jesus said to them: They have no need to go: give ye them to eat. They answered him: We have not here, but five loaves, and two fishes. Who said to them: Bring them hither to me. And when he had commanded the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up unto Heaven he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his Disciples, and the Disciples to the multitudes. And they did all eat, and had their fill. And they took the leavings, twelve full baskets of the fragments. And the number of them that did eat was, five thousand men, beside women and children.
