Iam lucis orto sídere Deum precémur súpplices, ut in diúrnis áctibus nos servet a nocéntibus.

Now in the sun’s new dawning ray, Lowly of heart, our God we pray That He from harm may keep us free In all the deeds this day shall see.

Linguam refrénans témperet, ne litis horror ínsonet; visum fovéndo cóntegat, ne vanitátes háuriat.

May fear of Him our tongues restrain, Lest strife unguarded speech should stain: His favoring care our guardian be, Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

Sint pura cordis íntima, absístat et vecórdia; carnis terat supérbiam potus cibíque párcitas;

May every heart be pure from sin, And folly find no place therein: Scant meed of food, excess denied, Wear down in us the body’s pride.

Meditation on the Word of God and His law.

Hæc est caritas Dei, ut mandata eius servemus (1 Io 5, 3).

To love God is to keep His commandments (1 Io 5, 3).

Beáti immaculáti in via, * qui ámbulant in lege Dómini.

Blessed are the undefiled in the way, * who walk in the law of the Lord.

Beáti qui servant testimónia eius, * in toto corde exquírunt eum.

Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, * that seek him with their whole heart.

Non enim operáti sunt iniquitátem, * in viis eius ambulavérunt.

For they that work iniquity * have not walked in his ways.

Tu mandásti mandáta tua * custodíri nimis.

Thou hast commanded * that thy commandments be kept most diligently.

Utinam dirigántur viæ meæ * ad custodiéndas iustificatiónes tuas!

O that my ways may be directed * to keep thy justifications!

Tunc non confúndar, * cum perspéxero in ómnibus præcéptis tuis.

Then shall I not be confounded, * when I shall look into all thy commandments.

Confitébor tibi in directióne cordis, * in eo quod dídici iudícia iustítiæ tuæ.

I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, * when I shall have learned the judgments of thy justice.

Iustificatiónes tuas custódiam, * non me derelínquas usquequáque.
