   Why have the Gentiles raged, and the people devised vain things?

   The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together, against the Lord, and against his Christ.

The Lord, confidence of the righteous
Beati, qui esuriunt et sitiunt iustitiam, quoniam ipsi saturabuntur (Mt 5, 6).
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled (Mt 5:6).
   In Dómino confído, quómodo dícitis ánimæ meæ: * «Tránsmigra in montem sicut passer?
   In the Lord I put my trust: how then do you say to my soul: Get thee away from hence to the mountain, like a sparrow.
   Quóniam ecce peccatóres intendérunt arcum, paravérunt sagíttas suas super nervum, * ut sagíttent in obscúro rectos corde.
   For, lo, the wicked have bent their bow; they have prepared their arrows in the quiver; to shoot in the dark the upright of heart.

   Erige mentem, útere naturáli ingénio: ad imáginem Dei factus es, ut supérna aspícias et terréna non quæras. Noli curváre cervícem tuam mundi preméndam póndere: noli inhiáre auro atque argénto, ne te sæculi vínculis alligándum præbeas. Ideo dixit Dóminus: Nolíte possidére aurum atque argéntum, ne nos auri atque argénti cupíditas avára possídeat. Noli ergo insérere collum tuum diáboli láqueis. Strángulat avarítia páuperem in hoc sæculo: sed in perpétuum dives suis láqueis suffocátur; cuius sensus in vanitáte est, in ténebris ámbulat; quia in his labórat, quæ sibi prodésse non possint.
   
   Vánitas est sollicitúdo vitæ huius. Unde non in crápula et ebrietáte, non in delíciis córporis, sed in cognitióne præceptórum cæléstium delectatiónem nostri debémus pónere.    Sed non satis est ut tu avértas; ne forte velis et non possis, offúndat tibi diábolus vanitátum spectácula, incentíva ínserat voluptátum; pete ut Dóminus avértat óculos tuos. Et hæc grátia Dei, et hoc munus est Dómini; ut óculos ánimæ nostræ a negótiis mundi huius avértat. Beatitúdo enim omnis a Dómino est: Beátus autem vir cui nomen Dómini spes eius, et non respéxit in vanitátes et insánias falsas. Qui non réspicit hæc, beátus est: qui autem réspicit, insánus atque furiósus est. Et ídeo resipíscat unusquísque a furóre sæculárium cupiditátum, quæ ita mentem animúmque pertúrbant, ut compos sui esse non possit.
