Qu'est-ce que le prêtre ? Un homme qui tient la place de Dieu, un homme revêtu des pouvoirs de Dieu même. Allez, dit notre Seigneur au prêtre, comme mon Père m'a envoyé, moi aussi je vous envoie. Toute puissance m'a été donnée au ciel et sur la terre. Allez donc, instruisez toutes les nations. Celui qui vous écoute m'écoute ; celui qui vous méprise me méprise. Lorsqu'il remet les péchés, le prêtre ne dit pas : "Dieu vous pardonne", il dit : "Je vous absous."
Saint Bernard assure que toutes les grâces nous viennent par Marie ; on peut dire aussi qu'elles nous viennent toutes par le prêtre : oui, tous les bonheurs, toutes les grâces, tous les dons célestes. Si nous n'avions pas le sacrement de l'Ordre, nous n'aurions pas Notre-Seigneur : qui est-ce qui l'a mis là, dans ce tabernacle ? C'est le prêtre. Qui est-ce qui a reçu votre âme à son entrée dans la vie ? Le prêtre. Qui la nourrit pour lui donner la force de faire son pèlerinage ? Le prêtre. Qui la préparera à paraître devant Dieu, en lavant cette âme, pour la dernière fois, dans le sang de Jésus-Christ ? Le prêtre. Et si cette âme vient à mourir, qui la ressuscitera ? Qui lui rendra le calme et la paix ? Encore le prêtre. Vous ne pouvez pas vous rappeler un seul bienfait de Dieu, sans rencontrer, à côté de ce souvenir, l'image du prêtre.
Oh! Que le prêtre est quelque chose de grand! Le prêtre ne se comprendra que dans le ciel. Si on le comprenait sur terre, on mourrait, non de frayeur, mais d'amour. Les autres bienfaits de Dieu ne nous serviraient de rien sans le prêtre. À quoi servirait une maison remplie d'or, si vous n'aviez personne pour vous en ouvrir la porte ? Sans le prêtre, la mort et la passion de Notre-Seigneur ne serviraient de rien. Le prêtre n'est pas prêtre pour lui. Il n'est pas pour lui, il est pour vous. La belle mission du prêtre, c'est d'être l'âme et le soutien de la religion. Après Dieu, le prêtre, c'est tout. Laissez une paroisse vingt ans sans prêtre, hélas, que deviendra-t-elle ? Voyez les pays où il n'y a pas de prêtres, on y adore les bêtes, les plantes!
