Domini in templum adventus

The advent of God in the Temple

Christo apertæ sunt portæ cæli propter carnalem eius assumptionem (S. Irenæus).

The gates of heaven were opened to Christ because He took on human nature. (S. Irenaeus)

Dómini est terra et plenitúdo eius, * orbis terrárum et qui hábitant in eo.

Unto the Lord is the earth and all that is in it, the world and all those who inhabit it.

Quia ipse super mária fundávit eum * et super flúmina firmávit eum.

For it is He who founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.

Quis ascéndet in montem Dómini, * aut quis stabit in loco sancto eius?

Who will go up on the mountain of the Lord, or who will stand in his holy place?

Innocens mánibus et mundo corde, † qui non levávit ad vana ánimam suam, * nec iurávit in dolum.

He who has innocent hands and a pure heart, who has not given up his soul to vanity, nor made a deceitful oath to his neighbor.

Hic accípiet benedictiónem a Dómino * et iustificatiónem a Deo salutári suo.

He shall receive the blessing of the Lord, and the mercy of God, his Savior.

Hæc est generátio quæréntium eum, * quæréntium fáciem Dei Iacob.

Such is the race of those who seek him, of those who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

Attóllite, portæ, cápita vestra, † et elevámini, portæ æternáles, * et introíbit rex glóriæ.

Lift up thy gates, O princes, and lift yourselves up, eternal gates, and the king of glory will enter.

Quis est iste rex glóriæ? * Dóminus fortis et potens, Dóminus potens in prœlio.

Who is this king of glory? He is the Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

Lift up thy gates, O princes, and lift yourselves up, eternal gates, and the king of glory will enter.

Who is this king of glory? The Lord of hosts is Himself this king of glory.

Wedding song for the king

Ecce Sponsus venit; exite obviam ei (Mt 25, 6).

Behold the bridegroom, go out to meet him (Mt 25:6).

Eructávit cor meum verbum bonum, † dico ego ópera mea regi. * Língua mea cálamus scribæ velóciter scribéntis.

From my heart springs a beautiful song; I dedicate my work unto the king. My tongue is like the swift reed of the scribe.

Speciósus forma es præ fíliis hóminum, † diffúsa est grátia in lábiis tuis, * proptérea benedíxit te Deus in ætérnum.

Thou art the fairest of the sons of man, grace is poured out on Thy lips, that is wherefore God has blessed Thou forevermore.

Accíngere gládio tuo super femur tuum, potentíssime, * magnificéntia tua et ornátu tuo.

gird Thy sword on Thy thigh, O hero, put on Thy splendor and Thy majesty.

Et ornátu tuo procéde, currum ascénde * propter veritátem et mansuetúdinem et iustítiam.

And in Thy majesty go forward, mount Thy chariot, fight for truth, meekness and justice.

Et dóceat te mirabília déxtera tua: † sagíttæ tuæ acútæ pópuli sub te cadent * in corda inimicórum regis.

and let Thy right hand cause Thou to do wonderful deeds. Thy arrows are sharp, and peoples will fall at Thy feet, and they will pierce the hearts of the king's enemies.

Sedes tua, Deus, in sǽculum sǽculi; * sceptrum æquitátis sceptrum regni tui.

Thy throne, O God, is established forevermore; the scepter of thy kingdom is a scepter of righteousness.

Dilexísti iustítiam et odísti iniquitátem, † proptérea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus, * óleo lætítiæ præ consórtibus tuis.

Thou lovest righteousness and hate iniquity: wherefore God thy God has anointed thou with an oil of gladness, in preference to Thy companions.

Myrrh, aloe, and cassia exhale from all Thy garments, from the ivory palaces, the lyres rejoice Thou.

Daughters of kings are amongst Thy beloved, the queen is at Thy right hand, adorned with the gold of Ophir.

Hearken, my daughter, behold and hearken: forget thy people and thy father's house,

and the king will be enamoured of thy beauty; for He is thy Lord: pay homage to Him.

Fília Tyri cum munéribus; * vultum tuum deprecabúntur dívites plebis.

The daughter of Tyre, with presents, and the richest of the people will seek thy favor. "

Gloriósa nimis fília regis intrínsecus, * textúris áureis circumamícta.

All resplendent is the king's daughter in the interior; his garment is made of golden cloth.

In véstibus variegátis adducétur regi; * vírgines post eam, próximæ eius, afferúntur tibi.

In a dress of various colours, she is presented unto the king; after them, young girls his companions, are brought unto thee.

Afferúntur in lætítia et exsultatióne, * adducúntur in domum regis.

They are introduced in the midst of rejoicing and gladness; they enter the King's palace.

Pro pátribus tuis erunt tibi fílii; * constítues eos príncipes super omnem terram.

Thy children will take the place of thy fathers; thou shalt make them princes over all the earth.

Memor ero nóminis tui * in omni generatióne et generatióne;

I will recall thy name in all ages;

proptérea pópuli confitebúntur tibi in ætérnum * et in sǽculum sǽculi.

and the people will praise thou forevermore and ever.

Deus refugium et virtus

God, refuge and strength

Vocabunt nomen eius Emmanuel, quod est interpretatum Nobiscum Deus (Mt 1, 23).

He will be called Emmanuel, which means God With Us (Mt 1:23).

Deus est nobis refúgium et virtus, * adiutórium in tribulatiónibus invéntus est nimis.

God is our refuge and our strength, a help that we evermore find in tribulation.

Proptérea non timébimus, dum turbábitur terra, * et transferéntur montes in cor maris.

Wherefore we are not afraid if the earth is disturbed, if the mountains sink into the heart of the ocean.

Fremant et intuméscant aquæ eius, * conturbéntur montes in elatióne eius.

Its waters roared and were agitated, the mountains were shaken by its power.

Flúminis rivi lætíficant civitátem Dei, * sancta tabernácula Altíssimi.

A river rejoices the city of God with its abundant streams, the Most High has sanctified his tabernacle.

Deus in médio eius, non commovébitur; * adiuvábit eam Deus mane dilúculo.

God is in her midst, she is immovable; at dawn, God comes to his aid:

Fremuérunt gentes, commóta sunt regna; * dedit vocem suam, liquefácta est terra.

Nations are agitated, kingdoms are shaken; He maketh his voice heard and the earth melts with terror.

The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is a citadel for us.

Come, behold the works of the Lord, the wonders He hath wrought on earth!

He hath stopped wars unto the ends of the earth, He hath broken the bow, He hath broken the spear, and He shall burn the shields with fire.

Stop and recognize that I am God, I will rule over the nations, I will rule over the earth.

Confidence of the innocent and prayer

Elegit nos Deus in Christo, ut essemus sancti et immaculati (Eph 1, 4).

God has chosen us in Christ to be holy and blameless (Eph 1:4).

Iúdica me, Dómine, † quóniam ego in innocéntia mea ingréssus sum * et in Dómino sperans non infirmábor.

Do me justice, Lord, for I have walked in my innocence, I trust in the Lord, I will not waver.

Proba me, Dómine, et tenta me; * ure renes meos et cor meum.

Test me, Lord, search me, put my loins and my heart through the crucible.

Quóniam misericórdia tua ante óculos meos est, * et ambulávi in veritáte tua.

For Thy mercy is before my eyes, and I walk in Thy truth.

Our salvation is near

On earth, through the descent of the Redeemer, God has showered blessing on His land (Origen).

Thou hast been favorable to Thy country, Lord, Thou hast brought back Jacob's captives.

Jerusalem, mother of all nations

Illa quæ sursum est Ierusalem, libera est, quæ est mater nostra (Gal 4, 26).

The Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother (Gal 4:26).

Fundaménta eius in móntibus sanctis; † díligit Dóminus portas Sion * super ómnia tabernácula Iacob.

He founded it on the holy mountains; The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all of Jacob's dwellings.

Gloriósa dicta sunt de te, * cívitas Dei!

Glorious things have been said about thou, city of God!

The Lord is King and Judge of all the earth

Cantabant quasi canticum novum ante sedem in conspectu Agni (Cf. Ap 14, 3).

They sang like a new hymn before the throne in the presence of the Lamb (Cf. Rev 14:3).

Cantáte Dómino cánticum novum, * cantáte Dómino, omnis terra.

Sing unto the Lord a new song, sing unto the Lord, the whole earth.

Cantáte Dómino, benedícite nómini eius, * annuntiáte de die in diem salutáre eius.

Sing unto the Lord, bless His name! Proclaim His salvation from day to day,

Annuntiáte inter gentes glóriam eius, * in ómnibus pópulis mirabília eius.

Tell of His glory amongst the nations, His wonders amongst all the people.

For the Lord is great and worthy of all praise, He is dreadful above all gods,

for all the gods of the nations are naught. But the Lord made the heavens.

Magnificéntia et pulchritúdo in conspéctu eius, * poténtia et decor in sanctuário eius.

Splendor and magnificence are before Him, power and majesty are in His sanctuary.

The Lord is king: let the earth rejoice, let the many islands rejoice.

The cloud and the shadow surround him, justice and equity are the basis of His throne.
