The zeal of Your house devours me

Dederunt ei vinum bibere cum felle mixtum (Mt 27,34).

They gave Him wine mixed with gall to drink.

Salvum me fac, Deus, * quóniam venérunt aquæ usque ad guttur meum.

Save me, O God, for the waters have entered my soul.

Infíxus sum in limo profúndi, et non est substántia; * veni in profúnda aquárum, et fluctus demérsit me.

I am buried in a deep mud, where there is no consistency; I went down unto the bottom of the water and the flood overwhelmed me.

I tired myself out screaming, my throat was hoarse; my eyes have been exhausted, whilst I wait for my God.

All those who persecute me are before thee; my heart expects insult and misery.

As for me, I am poor and in pain; Thy salvation, O God, has raised me up.

Martýrium Vírginis tam in Symeónis prophetía quam in ipsa domínicæ passiónis história commendátur. Pósitus est hic, ait sanctus senex de párvulo Iesu, in signum cui contradicétur, et tuam ipsíus ánimam - ad Maríam autem dicébat - pertránsibit gládius.
