   Lectio I

Ille vero ait: “In quo ergo baptizáti estis?”
And it came to pass when Apollo was at Corinth, that Paul having gone through the higher parts came to Ephesus, and found certain Disciples: and he said to them: Have you received the Holy Ghost, believing? But they said to him: Nay, neither have we heard whether there be a Holy Ghost. But he said: In what then were you baptized? Who said, In John's Baptism. And Paul said: John baptized the people with the Baptism of penance, saying, That they should believe in him that was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus. Hearing these things, they were baptized in the name of our Lord Jesus. And when Paul had imposed hands on them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, & they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve. And entering into the Synagogue, he spake confidently for three months, disputing & exhorting of the Kingdom of God.

At that time: His Disciples say to Jesus: Behold now thou speakest plainly, and sayest no proverb. Now we know that thou knowest all things, and thou needest not that any man ask thee. In this we believe that thou camest forth from God. Jesus answered them: Now do you believe? Behold the hour cometh, and it is now come, that you shall be scattered every man into his own, and me you shall leave alone: and I am not alone because the Father is with me. These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you shall have distress, but have confidence, I have overcome the world.

   PRÆFATIO II DE SANCTIS MARTYRIBUS
PREFACE II ON THE HOLY MARTYRS
De mirabilibus Dei in martyrum victoria
God's Wonders in the Martyrs' Victory
It is verily right and just, fair and salutary, to give thee thanks evermore and everywhere: Lord, holy Father, eternal and almighty God:
for thee are glorified in the praise of Thy saints, and everything related to their passion is the wondrous work of Thy power: it is Thou who graciously grant the fervor of this faith, Thou who inspire steadfast perseverance, Thou who bestow victory in battle, through Christ our Lord.
That is wherefore the heavenly and earthly creatures sing a new song unto thee as they worship Thou, and we, too, together with the entire host of angels, proclaim without end, saying:
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dóminus Deus Sábaoth...
