  How great are Thy works, Lord! Thou hast done all things wisely; the earth is all filled with Thy goods.
  Hoc mare magnum et spatiósum et latum: illic reptília, quorum non est númerus, * animália pusílla cum magnis;
  Here is the vast sea, with immense arms (and spacious on both sides): there are the reptiles without number, the animals large and small.
  illic naves pertransíbunt, * Levíathan, quem formásti ad ludéndum cum eo.
  This is where the ships pass, this monster (dragon) that Thou hast trained to play in.
  Omnia a te exspéctant, * ut des illis escam in témpore suo.
  All of them expect Thou to give them their food in His (in) (willed) time.
  Dante te illis, cólligent, * aperiénte te manum tuam, implebúntur bonis.
  When Thou givest it unto them, they collect it; when Thou open Thy hand, they are all filled with Thy possessions.
  Averténte autem te fáciem, turbabúntur; áuferes spíritum eórum, et defícient * et in púlverem suum reverténtur.
  But if Thou turn away Thy face, they will be troubled; Thou takest away their breath, and they will faint (perish) and return to their dust.

  Egréssus est vir propugnátor de castris Philisthinórum nómine Góliath de Geth altitúdinis sex cubitórum et palmi. Stansque clamábat advérsum ágmina Israel et dicébat eis: "Quare venítis paráti ad prœlium? Numquid ego non sum Philisthæus, et vos servi Saul? Elígite ex vobis virum, et descéndat ad singuláre certámen! Si quíverit pugnáre mecum et percússerit me, érimus vobis servi; si autem ego prævalúero et percússero eum, vos servi éritis et serviétis nobis." Et aiébat Phlisthæus: "Ego exprobrávi agmínibus Israel hódie: Date mihi virum, et íneat mecum singuláre certámen!"
  
  Cum David fuísset addúctus ad Saul, locútus est ei: "Non cóncidat cor cuiúsquam in eo; ego servus tuus vadam et pugnábo advérsus Philisthæum istum." Tulit báculum suum in manu sua; et elégit sibi quinque levíssimos lápides de torrénte et misit eos in peram pastorálem, qua ut sácculo lápidum utebátur, et fundam manu tulit et procéssit advérsum Phlisthæum.
  
  Dixit Philisthæus ad David: "Veni ad me, et dabo carnes tuas volatílibus cæli et béstiis terræ." Dixit autem David ad Phlisthæum: "Tu venis ad me cum gládio et hasta et acínace; ego autem vénio ad te in nómine Dómini exercítuum, Dei ágminum Israel, quibus exprobrásti. Hódie dabit te Dóminus in manu mea, et percútiam te et áuferam caput tuum a te; et dabo cadáver tuum et cadávera castrórum Philísthim hódie volatílibus cæli et béstiis terræ, ut sciat omnis terra quia est Deus in Israel, et nóverit univérsa ecclésia hæc quia non in gládio nec in hasta salvat Dóminus: ipsíus enim est bellum, et tradet vos in manus nostras."
  
  Cum ergo surrexísset Phlisthæus et veníret et appropinquáret contra David, festinávit David et cucúrrit ad pugnam advérsum Philisthæum. Et misit manum suam in peram tulítque unum lápidem et funda iecit; et percússit Phlisthæum in fronte, et infíxus est lapis in fronte eius, et cécidit in fáciem suam super terram. Prævaluítque David advérsum Philisthæum in funda et in lápide; percussúmque Phlisthæum interfécit.   Stabant fílii Israel contra adversários quadragínta dies. Quadragínta dies, propter quáttuor témpora et quáttuor partes orbis terræ, vitam præséntem signíficant, in qua contra Góliath vel exércitum eius, id est contra diábolum et ángelos eius, christianórum pópulus pugnáre non désinit. Nec tamen víncere posset, nisi verus David Christus cum báculo, id est, cum crucis mystério descendísset.
  
  Ante advéntum enim Christi, fratres caríssimi, solútus erat diábolus; véniens Christus fecit de eo, quod in evangélio dictum est: Nemo potest intráre in domum fortis et vasa eius dirípere, nisi prius alligáverit fortem. Venit ergo Christus et alligávit diábolum. Sed dicit áliquis: "Si alligátus est, quare adhuc tantum prævalet?" Verum est, fratres caríssimi, quia multum prævalet; sed tépidis et neglegéntibus et Deum in veritáte non timéntibus dominátur.
  
  Alligátus est enim tamquam innéxus canis caténis, et néminem potest mordere, nisi eum qui se illi mortífera securitáte coniúnxerit. Iam vidéte, fratres, quam stultus est homo ille, quem canis in caténa pósitus mordet. Tu te ad illum per voluntátes et cupiditátes sæculi noli coniúngere, et ille ad te non præsúmet accédere.   Venit ergo David, et invénit Iudæórum pópulum contra diábolum prœliántem; et cum nullus esset, qui præsúmeret ad singuláre certámen accédere, ille, qui figúram Christi gerébat, procéssit ad prœlium, tulit báculum in manu sua, et éxiit contra Góliath. Et in illo quidem tunc figurátum est, quod in Dómino Iesu Christo complétum est. Venit enim verus David, Christus, qui contra spiritálem Góliath, id est contra diábolum, pugnatúrus, crucem suam ipse portávit. Vidéte, fratres, ubi David Góliath percússerit: in fronte útique, ubi crucis signáculum non habébat.
