Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Enlighten my understanding, inflame my love, so that I may recite this office with respect, attention, and devotion, and merit to be heard in the presence of Thy divine majesty. The Lord is my protector

He lay down and fell asleep, and He rose again because the Lord sustained Him.

Dómine, quid multiplicáti sunt, qui tríbulant me? * Multi insúrgunt advérsum me,

O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.

Many say to my soul: * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”

Lord, the king rejoices in Thy strength; how Thy help fills him with gladness!

Thou gavest him what his heart desired, Thou didst not refuse what his lips asked.

Afflictio iusti et exauditio

The distress of the righteous is answered.

Clamavit Iesus voce magna «Eli, Eli, lama sabachtani» (Mt 27,46)

Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?"

Deus, Deus meus, quare me dereliquísti? * Longe a salúte mea verba rúgitus mei.

O God, my God, wherefore have Thou forsaken me? I groan, and salvation remains far from me!

Deus meus, clamo per diem, et non exáudis, * et nocte, et non est réquies mihi.

My God, I cry during the day, and Thou dost not hearken unto me; and during the night, no rest for me.

Tu autem sanctus es, * qui hábitas in láudibus Israel.

But Thou dwellest in the sanctuary; Thou who are the praise of Israel.

Edent páuperes et saturabúntur; † et laudábunt Dóminum, qui requírunt eum: * “Vívant corda eórum in sǽculum sǽculi!”

The poor will eat and be filled, and those who seek the Lord will praise Him; their hearts will live forevermore and ever.

Reminiscéntur et converténtur ad Dóminum univérsi fines terræ, * et adorábunt in conspéctu eíus univérsæ famíliæ géntium.

All the ends of the earth will keep in remembrance the Lord and be converted to Him; and all the families of the nations will worship Him in His presence;

Quóniam Dómini est regnum, * et ipse dominábitur géntium.

for the kingdom belongs unto the Lord, and He shall rule over the nations.

Ipsum solum adorábunt omnes, qui dórmiunt in terra; * in conspéctu eíus prócident omnes, qui descéndunt in púlverem.

All the rich of the earth have eaten and worshipped; all those who descend into the earth will bow down to Him.

Ánima autem mea illi vivet, * et semen meum sérviet ipsi.

And my soul will live for Him, and my seed will serve Him.

Narrábitur de Dómino generatióni ventúræ; † et annuntiábunt iustítiam eíus pópulo, * qui nascétur: “Hæc fecit Dóminus!”

The seed that is to come will be announced unto the Lord, and the heavens will declare His righteousness unto the people that are to be born, and whom the Lord has made.

Gratiarum actio pro liberatione a morte

Thanksgiving for deliverance from death.

Christus post resurrectionem gloriosam Patri gratias agit (Cassiodorus).

Christ, after the resurrection, gave glory to the Father (Cassiodorus).

Exaltábo te, Dómine, quóniam extraxísti me, * nec delectásti inimícos meos super me.

I exalt Thou, Lord, for Thou hast raised me up, Thou hast not rejoiced my enemies over me.

Dómine Deus meus, clamávi ad te, * et sanásti me.

Lord, my God, I cried out to Thou and Thou healed me.

Dómine, eduxísti ab inférno ánimam meam, * vivificásti me, ut non descénderem in lacum.

Lord, Thou hast brought my soul up from hell, Thou hast restored me to life, far from those who descend into the pit.

Psállite Dómino, sancti eius, * et confitémini memóriæ sanctitátis eius,

Sing unto the Lord, thou His saints, celebrate the memory of His holiness,

quóniam ad moméntum indignátio eius * et per vitam volúntas eius.

For His indignation lasts a moment, and His grace lasts all life.

Ad vésperum demorátur fletus, * ad matutínum lætítia.

In the evening comes weeping, and in the morning gladness.

Ego autem dixi in securitáte mea: * «Non movébor in ætérnum».

I said in my security: "I will never be shaken".

Dómine, in voluntáte tua * præstitísti decóri meo virtútem;

Lord, by Thy grace Thou hadst established my mountain;

avertísti fáciem tuam a me, * et factus sum conturbátus.

Thou hid Thy face, and I was troubled.

Ad te, Dómine, clamábam * et ad Deum meum deprecábar.

Lord, I cried out to Thou, I cried out unto the Lord

Quæ utílitas in sánguine meo, * dum descéndo in corruptiónem?

What use is it to my blood if I descend into corruption?

Numquid confitébitur tibi pulvis * aut annuntiábit veritátem tuam?

Will the dust sing Thy praises, will it announce Thy truth?

Audívit Dóminus et misértus est mei, * Dóminus factus est adiútor meus.

Hearken, Lord, be propitious unto me; Lord, help Thou.

Convertísti planctum meum in choros mihi, * conscidísti saccum meum et accinxísti me lætítia,

And thou changed my lamentations into gladness, thou loosed my sackcloth and girded me with joy,

ut cantet tibi glória mea et non táceat. * Dómine Deus meus, in ætérnum confitébor tibi.

so that [my soul] may sing to Thou and not be silent. Lord, my God, for eternity I will praise Thou.

Afflicti supplicatio cum fiducia

Confident supplication of the afflicted.

Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum (Lc 23,46)

Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit (Lk 23:46)

In te, Dómine, sperávi, non confúndar in ætérnum; * in iustítia tua líbera me.

I have hoped in Thou, Lord; that I should never be confounded; in Thy righteousness, deliver me.

Inclína ad me aurem tuam, * accélera, ut éruas me.

Incline thy ear unto me; Make haste to deliver me. Be me a protective God and a house of refuge, that Thou may save me.

Esto mihi in rupem præsídii et in domum munítam, * ut salvum me fácias.

For Thou art my strength and refuge, and for Thy Name's sake Thou shalt lead me and feed me.

Quóniam fortitúdo mea et refúgium meum es tu * et propter nomen tuum dedúces me et pasces me.

Thou shalt rescue me from this snare that they have hidden against me, for Thou art my protector.

Edúces me de láqueo, quem abscondérunt mihi, * quóniam tu es fortitúdo mea.

I commend my soul into Thy hands; Thou hast redeemed me, Lord, God of truth.

In manus tuas comméndo spíritum meum; * redemísti me, Dómine, Deus veritátis.

Thou hate those who cling without any fruit to vain things.

Odísti observántes vanitátes supervácuas, * ego autem in Dómino sperávi.

As for me, I have put my hope in the Lord. I will leap for joy and gladness in Thy mercy.

Exsultábo et lætábor in misericórdia tua, * quóniam respexísti humilitátem meam;

For Thou hast looked upon my humbled state; Thou hast saved my soul from anguish.

agnovísti necessitátes ánimæ meæ † nec conclusísti me in mánibus inimíci; * statuísti in loco spatióso pedes meos.

And Thou didst not deliver me into the hands of the enemy; Thou put my feet out to sea.

Miserére mei, Dómine, quóniam tríbulor; † conturbátus est in mæróre óculus meus, * ánima mea et venter meus.

Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am very afflicted; my eye, my soul, and my bowels are troubled with anger.

Quóniam defécit in dolóre vita mea, * et anni mei in gemítibus;

For my life is consumed in pain, and my years in groaning.

infirmáta est in paupertáte virtus mea, * et ossa mea contabuérunt.

My strength has been weakened by poverty, and my bones are shaken.

Apud omnes inimícos meos factus sum oppróbrium † et vicínis meis valde et timor notis meis: * qui vidébant me foras, fugiébant a me.

More than all my enemies, I have become an object of reproach, especially to my neighbors, and the terror of those who know me.

Oblivióni a corde datus sum tamquam mórtuus; * factus sum tamquam vas pérditum.

Those who saw me outside fled from me. I have been forgotten by hearts, like a dead man.

Quóniam audívi vituperatiónem multórum: * horror in circúitu;

I have been like a broken vessel; for I have heard the insulting words of those who live around.

in eo dum convenírent simul advérsum me, * auférre ánimam meam consiliáti sunt.

When they gathered together against me, they held a council to take my life.

Ego autem in te sperávi, Dómine; † dixi: “Deus meus es tu, * in mánibus tuis sortes meæ.”

But I have hoped in Thee, Lord. I said, "Thou art my God;

Éripe me de manu inimicórum meórum * et a persequéntibus me;

my destinies are in Thy hands. Snatch me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors.

illústra fáciem tuam super servum tuum, * salvum me fac in misericórdia tua.

Let Thy face shine on Thy servant; save me by Thy mercy.

Dómine, non confúndar, quóniam invocávi te; * erubéscant ímpii et obmutéscant in inférno.

Lord, let me not be confounded, for I have called upon Thou. Let the ungodly be ashamed and led into hell;

Muta fiant lábia dolósa, † quæ loquúntur advérsus iústum protérva * in supérbia et in abusióne.

let the deceitful lips become dumb, they who utter iniquity against the righteous, with pride and insolence.

Quam magna multitúdo dulcédinis tuæ, Dómine, * quam abscondísti timéntibus te.

How great, O Lord, is the abundance of Thy meekness, which Thou hast set up for those who fear Thou!

Perfecísti eis, qui sperant in te, * in conspéctu filiórum hóminum.

Thou exercise it against those who hope in Thou, in the sight of the children of men.

Abscóndes eos in abscóndito faciéi tuæ * a conturbatióne hóminum;

Thou shalt hide them in the secret of Thy face, safe from the tumult of men.

próteges eos in tabernáculo * a contradictióne linguárum.

Thou shalt protect them in Thy tabernacle from the tongues that attack them.

Benedíctus Dóminus, * quóniam mirificávit misericórdiam suam mihi in civitáte muníta.

Blessed be the Lord, for He hath shown His mercy unto me in a fortified city.

Ego autem dixi in trepidatióne mea: * “Præcísus sum a conspéctu oculórum tuórum.”

As for me, I said in the transport of my spirit: I have been rejected from before Thy eyes.

Verúmtamen exaudísti vocem oratiónis meæ, * dum clamárem ad te.

That is wherefore Thou heardest the voice of my prayer when I cried out to Thou.

Dilígite Dóminum, omnes sancti eíus: † fidéles consérvat Dóminus * et retríbuit abundánter faciéntibus supérbiam.

Love the Lord, all thou His saints; for the Lord will seek the truth, and He shall punish widely those who give themselves up to pride.

Viríliter ágite, et confortétur cor vestrum, * omnes, qui sperátis in Dómino.

Be courageous, and let thy hearts be strengthened, all thou who hope in the Lord.

Beatus, cui remissa est iniquitas

Blessed is he whose iniquity is forgiven

David dicit beatitudinem hominis, cui Deus reputat iustitiam sine operibus (Rom 4, 6).

David proclaims happy the man to whom God imputes righteousness independently of works (Rom 4:6).

Beátus, cui remíssa est iníquitas * et obtéctum est peccátum.

Blessed is he whose iniquity has been forgiven, whose sin is blotted out.

Beátus vir, cui non imputávit Dóminus delíctum, * nec est in spíritu eius dolus.

Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose mind there is no guile.

Quóniam tácui, inveteravérunt ossa mea, * dum rugírem tota die.

As long as I was silent, my bones were consumed in my moan, every day.

Quóniam die ac nocte graváta est super me manus tua, * immutátus est vigor meus in ardóribus æstátis.

For day and night Thy hand was heavy on me, the sap of my life dried up in the heat of summer.

Peccátum meum cógnitum tibi feci * et delíctum meum non abscóndi.

I have made my sin known to Thou, and I have not concealed my iniquity.

Dixi: «Confitébor advérsum me iniquitátem meam Dómino». * Et tu remisísti impietátem peccáti mei.

I said, "I want to confess my worries unto the Lord." And Thou hast forgiven the ungodliness of my sin.

Propter hoc orábit ad te omnis sanctus * in témpore opportúno.

Forasmuch as of this, every holy man prays to Thou at the right time.

Et in dilúvio aquárum multárum * ad eum non approximábunt.

And when the great waters overflow, they will not come near him.

Tu es refúgium meum, a tribulatióne conservábis me; * exsultatiónibus salútis circúmdabis me.

Thou art my refuge, Thou shalt preserve me from distress; Thou shalt surround me with songs of deliverance.

Intelléctum tibi dabo et ínstruam te in via, qua gradiéris; * firmábo super te óculos meos.

I will instruct thou and show thee the way thou should go; I will be thy advisor, my eye will be on thou.

Nolíte fíeri sicut equus et mulus, * quibus non est intelléctus;

Do not be like the horse or mule without intelligence;

in camo et freno si accédis ad constringéndum, * non appróximant ad te.

they must be restrained with the bit and the brake, they do not approach Thou.

Multi dolóres ímpii, * sperántem autem in Dómino misericórdia circúmdabit.

Many sorrows are the part of the wicked, so that he who hopes in the Lord is surrounded by His mercy.

Lætámini in Dómino et exsultáte, iusti, * et gloriámini, omnes recti corde

Rejoice in the Lord, thou righteous ones, and rejoice and give glory to all thou who are upright in heart.

and who taught Him knowledge and showed Him the way of prudence?

Behold, the nations are like the drop of a bucket, and like a grain in the scales; The islands are like fine dust.

Et Líbanus non suffíciet ad succendéndum, * et animália eius non suffícient ad holocáustum.

Lebanon would not be enough for the stake, and its animals would not be enough for the burnt-offering.

He utters the war-cry, a loud cry; He deploys His strength against His enemies.

"For a long time I was silent, I kept silent, I restrained myself; like the woman who gives birth, I groan, I sigh, and I am panting.

I will desolate the mountains and the hills, and I will dry up all their verdure;

I will turn the rivers into islands, and I will dry up the lakes.

I have preserved thou, and established thou for the covenant of the people, to raise up the land, to possess the dissipated inheritances;

that thou may say to those who are in chains: Come out; and to those who are in darkness: Show thy face.

Super vias pascéntur, * et in ómnibus cóllibus decalvátis páscua eórum;

They will graze on the roads, and all the plains will be their pastures.

non esúrient neque sítient, * et non percútiet eos æstus vel sol,

They will no longer be hungry or thirsty; the heat and the sun will no longer strike them,

quia miserátor eórum reget eos * et ad fontes aquárum addúcet eos.

for He who has mercy on them will lead them and make them drink at the springs of the waters.

Et ponam omnes montes meos in viam, * et sémitæ meæ exaltabúntur.

Then I will turn all my mountains into roads, and my paths will be exalted.
