Lectio I
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who lived in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned. Thou hast multiplied the people, yet Thou hast not increased their joy. They will rejoice before thee, as one rejoices at harvest time, and as victors exult when they have plundered the enemy and divide the spoils. For the yoke that weighed upon him, the rod that tore at his back (shoulder), and the scepter of his oppressor—Thou hast broken them, as on the day of Midian. For all the spoils (all plunder) taken (by force and) in the tumult, and the garments stained with blood, will be cast into the fire and become fuel for the flames. For a child has been born unto us, and a son has been given unto us; he shall bear the mark of his principality on his shoulder; and he shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, God, Mighty One, Father of the Age to Come, Prince of Peace. His dominion will continue to expand, and there will be no end unto the peace; he shall sit on the throne of David, and he shall reign over his kingdom to establish and strengthen it through righteousness and justice, from now on and forevermore; the zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish these things.

At that time, the Angel Gabriel was sent of God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, to a virgin despoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the Angel being entered in, said unto her: Hail full of grace, our Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought what manner of salutation this should be. And the Angel said to her: Fear not Mary, for thou hast found grace with God. Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bear a Son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High, and our Lord God shall give him the seat of David his father: and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever, and of his Kingdom there shall be no end. And Mary said to the Angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man? And the Angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also that which of thee shall be born Holy, shall be called the Son of God. And behold Elizabeth thy cousin, she also hath conceived a Son in her old age; and this month, is the sixth to her that is called barren; because there shall not be impossible with God any word. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of our Lord, be it done to me according to thy word. And the Angel departed from her.

Præfatio I de beata Maria Virgine
First Preface of the Blessed Virgin Mary
De Maternitate beatæ Mariæ Virginis
On the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Verily, it is right and just, fair and salutary, for us evermore and everywhere to give thee thanks: Lord, Holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord.
Et te in festivitáte beátæ Maríæ semper Vírginis collaudáre, benedícere et prædicáre. Quæ et Unigénitum tuum Sancti Spíritus obumbratióne concépit, et, virginitátis glória permanénte, lumen ætérnum mundo effúdit, Iesum Christum Dóminum nostrum.
And to praise Thou, bless Thou, and proclaim Thou on the feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary, ever Virgin. For she conceived Thy only Son through the work of the Holy Spirit and, without losing the glory of her virginity, brought eternal light unto the world, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Per quem maiestátem tuam laudant Angeli, adórant Dominatiónes, tremunt Potestátes. Cæli cælorúmque Virtútes, ac beáta Séraphim, sócia exsultatióne concélebrant.
Through Him, the angels praise Thy majesty, the principalities worship Thou, and the powers tremble. The heavens of heavens, the virtues, and the blessed seraphim celebrate Thou, united in exultation.
It is with them that our voices join in, so that we may be included, we implore Thou, humbly singing Thy praises:
