Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Enlighten my understanding, inflame my love, so that I may recite this office with respect, attention, and devotion, and merit to be heard in the presence of Thy divine majesty. The Lord is my protector

Dormivit et somnum cepit et resurrexit, quoniam Dominus suscepit eum (S. Irenæus).

He lay down and fell asleep, and He rose again because the Lord sustained Him.

Dómine, quid multiplicáti sunt, qui tríbulant me? * Multi insúrgunt advérsum me,

O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.

multi dicunt ánimæ meæ: * «Non est salus ipsi in Deo».

Many say to my soul: * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”

Tu autem, Dómine, protéctor meus es, * glória mea et exáltans caput meum.

But thou, O Lord, art my protector, * my glory, and the lifter up of my head.

I have cried to the Lord with my voice, * and he hath heard me from his holy mountain.

The star from on high has come to visit us and guide our steps on the path of peace. (Lk 1, 78. 79).

Many are the misfortunes of the righteous, but from all the Lord delivers him.

Wedding song for the king

Ecce Sponsus venit; exite obviam ei (Mt 25, 6).

Behold the bridegroom, go out to meet him (Mt 25:6).

Eructávit cor meum verbum bonum, † dico ego ópera mea regi. * Língua mea cálamus scribæ velóciter scribéntis.

From my heart springs a beautiful song; I dedicate my work unto the king. My tongue is like the swift reed of the scribe.

Speciósus forma es præ fíliis hóminum, † diffúsa est grátia in lábiis tuis, * proptérea benedíxit te Deus in ætérnum.

Thou art the fairest of the sons of man, grace is poured out on Thy lips, that is wherefore God has blessed Thou forevermore.

Accíngere gládio tuo super femur tuum, potentíssime, * magnificéntia tua et ornátu tuo.

gird Thy sword on Thy thigh, O hero, put on Thy splendor and Thy majesty.

Et ornátu tuo procéde, currum ascénde * propter veritátem et mansuetúdinem et iustítiam.

And in Thy majesty go forward, mount Thy chariot, fight for truth, meekness and justice.

Et dóceat te mirabília déxtera tua: † sagíttæ tuæ acútæ pópuli sub te cadent * in corda inimicórum regis.

and let Thy right hand cause Thou to do wonderful deeds. Thy arrows are sharp, and peoples will fall at Thy feet, and they will pierce the hearts of the king's enemies.

Sedes tua, Deus, in sǽculum sǽculi; * sceptrum æquitátis sceptrum regni tui.

Thy throne, O God, is established forevermore; the scepter of thy kingdom is a scepter of righteousness.

Dilexísti iustítiam et odísti iniquitátem, † proptérea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus, * óleo lætítiæ præ consórtibus tuis.

Thou lovest righteousness and hate iniquity: wherefore God thy God has anointed thou with an oil of gladness, in preference to Thy companions.

Myrrha et áloe et cásia ómnia vestiménta tua; * e dómibus ebúrneis chordæ deléctant te.

Myrrh, aloe, and cassia exhale from all Thy garments, from the ivory palaces, the lyres rejoice Thou.

Fíliæ regum in pretiósis tuis; * ástitit regína a dextris tuis ornáta auro ex Ophir.

Daughters of kings are amongst Thy beloved, the queen is at Thy right hand, adorned with the gold of Ophir.

Audi, fília, et vide, † et inclína aurem tuam * et oblivíscere pópulum tuum et domum patris tui;

Hearken, my daughter, behold and hearken: forget thy people and thy father's house,

et concupíscet rex spéciem tuam. * Quóniam ipse est dóminus tuus, et adóra eum.

and the king will be enamoured of thy beauty; for He is thy Lord: pay homage to Him.

Fília Tyri cum munéribus; * vultum tuum deprecabúntur dívites plebis.

The daughter of Tyre, with presents, and the richest of the people will seek thy favor. "

Gloriósa nimis fília regis intrínsecus, * textúris áureis circumamícta.

All resplendent is the king's daughter in the interior; his garment is made of golden cloth.

In véstibus variegátis adducétur regi; * vírgines post eam, próximæ eius, afferúntur tibi.

In a dress of various colours, she is presented unto the king; after them, young girls his companions, are brought unto thee.

Afferúntur in lætítia et exsultatióne, * adducúntur in domum regis.

They are introduced in the midst of rejoicing and gladness; they enter the King's palace.

Pro pátribus tuis erunt tibi fílii; * constítues eos príncipes super omnem terram.

Thy children will take the place of thy fathers; thou shalt make them princes over all the earth.

Memor ero nóminis tui * in omni generatióne et generatióne;

I will recall thy name in all ages;

proptérea pópuli confitebúntur tibi in ætérnum * et in sǽculum sǽculi.

and the people will praise thou forevermore and ever.

Dominus universorum rex

The Lord is king of the universe

Sedet ad dexteram Patris, et regni eius non erit finis.

He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and His reign will have no end.

Omnes gentes, pláudite mánibus, * iubiláte Deo in voce exsultatiónis,

All of thee, peoples, clap thy hands, praise God with shouts of joy,

quóniam Dóminus Altíssimus, terríbilis, * rex magnus super omnem terram.

for the Lord is most high, fearful, great king over all the earth.

Subiécit pópulos nobis * et gentes sub pédibus nostris.

He subjugates the peoples unto us, He puts the nations under our feet.

Elégit nobis hereditátem nostram, * glóriam Iacob, quem diléxit.

He chooses for us our inheritance, the glory of Jacob, His beloved.

Ascéndit Deus in iúbilo, * et Dóminus in voce tubæ.

God ascends in joy; The Lord, unto the sound of the trumpet.

Sing to God, sing; sing to our King, sing.

For God is king of all the earth, sing a song of praise.

God rules over the nations, He sits on His holy throne.

The princes of the peoples come together to form a people of the God of Abraham,

for to God are the shields of the earth: He is supremely exalted.

O God, hearken my cries, be attentive to my prayer.

A fínibus terræ ad te clamávi, † dum anxiarétur cor meum. * In petram inaccéssam mihi deduc me!

From the ends of the earth I cry out to Thou, in the anguish of my heart; lead me unto the rock that I cannot reach."

Quia factus es spes mea, * turris fortitúdinis a fácie inimíci.

For Thou art a refuge for me, a mighty tower from the enemy.

Inhabitábo in tabernáculo tuo in sǽcula, * prótegar in velaménto alárum tuárum,

I would like to remain forevermore in Thy tent, to take refuge in the shelter of Thy wings,

quóniam tu, Deus meus, exaudísti vota mea, * dedísti hereditátem timéntium nomen tuum.

for Thou, O God, grant my wishes, Thou hast given me the inheritance of those who revere Thy name.

Add days unto the king's days, may his years be prolonged from age to age!

Sédeat in ætérnum in conspéctu Dei; * misericórdia et véritas servent eum.

Let him remain on the throne forevermore before God; command Thy mercy and Thy truth to keep it!

Exáudi, Deus, vocem meam in meditatióne mea; * a timóre inimíci custódi ánimam meam.

Hear, O God, my prayer, when I make supplication to thee: deliver my soul from the fear of the enemy.

Prótege me a convéntu malignántium, * a multitúdine operántium iniquitátem.

Thou hast protected me from the assembly of the malignant; from the multitude of the workers of iniquity.

Qui exacuérunt ut gládium línguas suas, † intendérunt sagíttas suas, venéfica verba * ut sagíttent in occúltis immaculátum.

For they have whetted their tongues like a sword; they have bent their bow, a bitter thing,

to shoot in secret the undefiled. They will shoot at him on a sudden, and will not fear:

Disputavérunt, ut abscónderent láqueos, * dixérunt: «Quis vidébit eos?».

they are resolute in wickedness. They have talked of hiding snares; they have said: Who shall see them?

Excogitavérunt iníqua, † perfecérunt excogitáta consília. * Interióra hóminis et cor eius abyssus.

They have searched after iniquities: they have failed in their search. Man shall come to a deep heart:

8 and God shall be exalted. The arrows of children are their wounds: and their tongues against them are made weak.

Dominus summus iudex

The Lord, supreme judge

Deposuit potentes de sede et exaltavit humiles (Lc 1, 52).

He removes the mighty from their thrones and exalts the humble (Lk 1:52).

Confitébimur tibi, Deus; † confitébimur et invocábimus nomen tuum: *narrábimus mirabília tua.

We will praise Thou, O God; we will praise Thou, and we will call on Thy name; we will tell of Thy wonders.

Cum statúero tempus, *ego iustítias iudicábo.

In the time that I have appointed, I will do perfect justice.

Si liquefácta est terra et omnes, qui hábitant in ea, *ego confirmávi colúmnas eius.

The earth has dissolved, with all those who dwell in it, and I have strengthened its pillars.

Dominus rex et iudex omnis terræ

The Lord is King and Judge of all the earth

Cantabant quasi canticum novum ante sedem in conspectu Agni (Cf. Ap 14, 3).

They sang like a new hymn before the throne in the presence of the Lamb (Cf. Rev 14:3).

Cantáte Dómino cánticum novum, * cantáte Dómino, omnis terra.

Sing unto the Lord a new song, sing unto the Lord, the whole earth.

Cantáte Dómino, benedícite nómini eius, * annuntiáte de die in diem salutáre eius.

Sing unto the Lord, bless His name! Proclaim His salvation from day to day,

Annuntiáte inter gentes glóriam eius, * in ómnibus pópulis mirabília eius.

Tell of His glory amongst the nations, His wonders amongst all the people.

Quóniam magnus Dóminus et laudábilis nimis, * terríbilis est super omnes deos.

For the Lord is great and worthy of all praise, He is dreadful above all gods,

Quóniam omnes dii géntium inánia, * Dóminus autem cælos fecit.

for all the gods of the nations are naught. But the Lord made the heavens.

Magnificéntia et pulchritúdo in conspéctu eius, * poténtia et decor in sanctuário eius.

Splendor and magnificence are before Him, power and majesty are in His sanctuary.

Render unto the Lord, family of nations, render unto the Lord glory and power, render unto the Lord the glory due to His name.

Bring the offering and come to His courts, prostrate yourselves before the Lord with the sacred ornament.

Tremble before Him, thou inhabitants of all the earth, say amongst the nations, "The Lord is king!"

wherefore the world will be stable and will not totter; He shall judge the people fairly.

May the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad! Let the sea be agitated with all that it contains! Let the countryside be cheerful with all that it contains,

let all the trees of the forest shout for joy before the Lord, for He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth.

Gloria Domini in iudicio

Glory to God in his justice

Hic psalmus salutem mundi significat et fidem omnium gentium in ipsum (S. Athanasius).

This psalm signifies the salvation of the world and the faith of every nation in him (S. Athanasius).

Dóminus regnávit! Exsúltet terra, * læténtur ínsulæ multæ.

The Lord is king: let the earth rejoice, let the many islands rejoice.

Nubes et calígo in circúitu eius, * iustítia et iudícium firmaméntum sedis eius.

The cloud and the shadow surround him, justice and equity are the basis of His throne.

Ignis ante ipsum præcédet * et inflammábit in circúitu inimícos eius.

Fire advances before Him, and devours His adversaries around him.

Illustrárunt fúlgura eius orbem terræ: * vidit et contrémuit terra.

His lightning illuminates the world: the earth sees him and trembles.

Montes sicut cera fluxérunt a fácie Dómini, * a fácie Dómini omnis terra.

The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.

The heavens proclaim His righteousness, and all peoples behold His glory.

They will be confounded all the worshippers of images, who are proud of their idols. All the angels bow down before Him.

Audívit et lætáta est Sion, † et exsultavérunt fíliæ Iudæ * propter iudícia tua, Dómine.

Zion has heard and rejoiced, and the daughters of Judah are glad forasmuch as of Thy judgments, O Lord.

For Thou, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth, and are supremely exalted above all the gods.

Thou who love the Lord, hate evil; He guards the souls of His faithful, He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

Sing a new song unto the Lord, for He hath done wonders.
