O God, who willed that St. John the Baptist should be the Forerunner of Thy Son in his birth as well as in his death; just as he fell as a martyr for truth and righteousness, make us also fight with courage to proclaim what thou hast taught us.
Lectio I
In those days, the word of the Lord came to me, saying: Thou therefore gird thy loins, & rise, and speak to them all things that I command thee. Be not afraid of their face: for I will make thee not to fear their countenance. For I have given thee this day to be as a fenced city, and as an iron pillar, and as a brazen wall over all the land of the kings of Juda, to the Princes thereof, & to the Priests, and to the people of the land. And they shall fight against thee, and shall not prevail: because I am with thee, saith our Lord, to deliver thee.
Verbum Dómini. r. Deo grátias.
Word of the Lord. r. Let us give thanks to God.

r. Glory be to Thee, O Lord..
Rex ait puéllæ: “Péte a me, quod vis, et dabo tibi.” Et iurávit illi multum: “quídquid petíeris a me, dabo tibi, usque ad dimídium regni mei.” Quæ cum exísset, dixit matri suæ: “Quid petam?” At illa dixit: “Cáput Ioánnis Baptístæ.”
At that time: Herod sent and apprehended John, and bound him in prison for Herodias the wife of Philippe his brother, because he had married her. For John said to Herod: It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife, And Herodias lay in wait for him: and was desirous to kill him, and could not. For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a just and holy man: and he kept him, and by hearing him did many things: and he heard him gladly. And when a convenient day was fallen, Herod made the supper of his birth-day to the Princes, and the Tribunes, and the chief of Galilee. And when the daughter of the same Herodias came in, and had danced, and pleased Herod, and them that sat with him at the table, the king said to the damsel: Ask of me what thou wilt, and I will give it thee. And he sware to her: That whatsoever thou shalt ask I will give thee, though the half of my kingdom. Who when she was gone forth, said to her mother, what shall I ask? But she said: The head of John the Baptist. And when she was gone in by and by with haste to the king, she asketh saying: I will that forthwith thou give me in a platter the head of John the Baptist. And the king was stroken sad. Because of his oath and for them that sat together at table he would not displease her: but sending the hangman, commanded that his head should be brought in a platter. And he beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head in a platter: and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother. Which his Disciples hearing came, and took his body; and they put it in a monument.

In virtúte tua, Dómine, lætábitur iustus, et super salutáre tuum exsultábit veheménter: desidérium ánimæ eius tribuísti ei.

De missione Præcursoris.
On the Mission of the Forerunner
Verily, it is right and just, fair and salutary for us, evermore and everywhere, to give thee thanks: Lord, Holy Father, eternal and almighty God, through Christ our Lord.
In cuius Præcursóre beáto Ioánne tuam magnificéntiam collaudámus, quem inter natos mulíerum honóre præcípuo consecrásti.
Through Thy Forerunner, the blessed John—whom Thou hast honored with a unique distinction amongst the children of women—we praise Thy majesty.
Although his birth brought great joy, and even before he was born he had rejoiced at the coming of salvation for humanity, he alone amongst all the prophets pointed unto the Lamb of redemption.
Moreover, to sanctify the flowing waters, he baptized the very author of baptism himself, and through the shedding of his blood, earned the privilege of bearing the highest testimony unto him.
Et ídeo, cum cælórum Virtútibus, in terris te iúgiter prædicámus, maiestáti tuæ sine fine clamántes:
And that is wherefore, together with the Powers of Heaven, we proclaim Thou ceaselessly on earth, praising Thy majesty without end.
