God, who, beside thy Son, lifted up on the cross, wanted to present his Sorrowful Mother: grant to thy Church, associated with her in the Passion of Christ, to be a partaker of his resurrection.
   Lectio I

Brethren: Jesus-Christ, who in the days of his flesh, with a strong cry and tears, offering prayers and supplications to him that could save him from death, was heard for his reverence. And truly whereas he was the Son, he learned by those things which he suffered, obedience: and being consummate, was made to all that obey him, cause of eternal salvation,
   Verbum Dómini. r. Deo grátias.
Word of the Lord. r. Let us give thanks to God.

STABAT Mater dolorósa iuxta Crucem lacrimósa, Dum pendébat Fílius.
   The sorrowful mother was standing
beside the Cross weeping,
while the Son was hanging.
Cuius ánimam geméntem Contristátam et doléntem, Pertransívit gládius.
   Whose moaning soul,
depressed and grieving,
the sword has passed through.
   O how sad and stricken
was that blessed [woman],
mother of the Only-begotten!
Quæ mærébat, et dolébat, Pia Mater, dum vidébat Nati pœnas íncliti.
   Who was mourning and suffering,
the pious Mother, while she was watching
the punishments of the glorious son.
Who is the person who would not weep,
if he had seen the mother of Christ
in such great suffering?
Who would not be able to be saddened
to behold the Mother of Christ
grieving with the Son?
Pro peccátis suæ gentis Vidit Iesum in torméntis, Et flagéllis súbditum.
For the sins of his people
she saw Jesus in torments,
and subjected to lashes.
Vidit suum dulcem natum Moriéndo desolátum, Dum emísit spíritum.
   She saw her sweet Son
dying forsaken,
while he sent forth [his] spirit.
Eia Mater, fons amóris, Me sentíre vim dolóris Fac, ut tecum lúgeam.
Come now, Mother, fountain of love
Make me feel the power of sorrow
that I might mourn with you.
Fac, ut árdeat cor meum In amándo Christum Deum, Ut sibi compláceam.
Grant that my heart may burn
in loving Christ the God
that I might please him.
Sancta Mater, istud agas, Crucifíxi fige plagas Cordi meo válide.
Holy Mother, may you do that,
fix the wounds of the crucified
mightily in my heart.
Tui nati vulneráti, Tam dignáti pro me pati, Pœnas mecum dívide.
   Of your wounded son,
[who] so deigned to suffer for me,
Share [his] penalties with me.
Fac me tecum pie flere, Crucifíxo condolére, Donec ego víxero.
Make me cry dutifully with you,
to suffer with the crucified,
as long as I shall have lived.
Iuxta Crucem tecum stare, Et me tibi sociáre In planctu desídero.
To stand by the Cross with you,
to unite me to you
in weeping [this] I desire.
Virgo vírginum præclára, Mihi iam non sis amára: Fac me tecum plángere.
   Noble Virgin of virgins,
Be not bitter with me now,
Make me mourn with you.
Fac, ut portem Christi mortem, Passiónis fac consórtem, Et plagas recólere.
Grant that I might bear the death of Christ,
Make [me] kindred in the passion,
and contemplate the wounds.
Fac me plagis vulnerári, Fac me Cruce inebriári, Et cruóre Fílii.
Make me injured by the wounds,
make me drunken by the Cross,
and by the blood of the Son.
Lest I be consumed burned by flames,
through you, Virgin, may I be defended
on the day of judgement.
Christ, when it is time to depart hence,
grant me to come through the Mother,
to the palm of victory.
Quando corpus moriétur, Fac, ut ánimæ donétur Paradísi glória.
   When the body will decay,
grant that it may be bestowed on [my] soul
the glory of paradise.
   Amen.

PRÆFATIO II DE BEATA MARIA VIRGINE
Second Preface of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Ecclesia, verbis Mariæ, laudes Deo persolvit
The Church, through the words of Mary, offers praise to God
Vere dignum et iustum est, æquum et salutáre, in ómnium Sanctórum provéctu te mirábilem confitéri, et potíssimum, beátæ Vírginis Maríæ memóriam recoléntes, cleméntiam tuam ipsíus grato magnificáre præcónio.
It is verily fitting and just, right and salutary to give thee thanks, Lord, and to proclaim Thy wonders through the perfection of Thy saints; and, especially as we commemorate the Blessed Virgin Mary, to exalt Thy mercy above all else by drawing inspiration from her song of praise.
Vere namque in omnes terræ fines magna fecísti, ac tuam in sǽcula prorogásti misericórdiæ largitátem, cum, ancíllæ tuæ humilitátem aspíciens, per eam dedísti humánæ salútis auctórem, Fílium tuum, Iesum Christum, Dóminum nostrum.
Verily, Thou hast done great works in the far corners of the earth, and Thou hast shown Thy mercy throughout the ages, when, looking upon the humility of Thy handmaid, Thou gave us through her the Author of human salvation, Jesus Christ, Thy Son and our Lord.
Per quem maiestátem tuam adórat exércitus Angelórum, ante conspéctum tuum in æternitáte lætántium.
Through whom the choirs of angels eternally praise Thy glory, rejoicing in Thy presence.
Let us join our voices with theirs in singing Thy praises, saying:
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dóminus Deus Sábaoth...

Rédime me, Deus Israël, ex ómnibus angústiis meis.
Deliver me, O God of Israel, from all my anguish.

Sumptis, Dómine, sacraméntis redemptiónis ætérnæ, súpplices deprecámur, ut, compassiónem beátæ Maríæ Vírginis recoléntes, ea in nobis pro Ecclésia adimpleámus, quæ desunt Christi passiónum. Qui vivit et regnat in sǽcula sæculórum.
Having received, Lord, the sacraments of eternal redemption, we implore Thou that, through the compassion of the Blessed Virgin Mary, she may help us to complete within ourselves, for the sake of the Holy Church, what is lacking in the Passion of Christ.

Simeon said to Mary: “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken againstand a sword will pierce thy own soul.”

   Ant. at communion

As thou share in Christ's sufferings, rejoice, so that when His glory is revealed, thou shalt exult in joy.
