Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Enlighten my understanding, inflame my love, so that I may recite this office with respect, attention, and devotion, and merit to be heard in the presence of Thy divine majesty. The Lord is my protector

He lay down and fell asleep, and He rose again because the Lord sustained Him.

Dómine, quid multiplicáti sunt, qui tríbulant me? * Multi insúrgunt advérsum me,

O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.

multi dicunt ánimæ meæ: * «Non est salus ipsi in Deo».

Many say to my soul: * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”

Tu autem, Dómine, protéctor meus es, * glória mea et exáltans caput meum.

But thou, O Lord, art my protector, * my glory, and the lifter up of my head.

I have cried to the Lord with my voice, * and he hath heard me from his holy mountain.

I will not fear thousands of the people that surround me. * Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God.

For thou hast struck all them who are my adversaries without cause; * thou hast broken the teeth of sinners.

Thanksgiving for the King's victory

Accepit vitam, ut resurgeret, et longitudinem dierum in sæculum sæculi (S. Irenæus).

He has received life, the Risen One, for ever and ever (S. Irenaeus).

Dómine in virtúte tua lætábitur rex, * et super salutáre tuum exsultábit veheménter.

Lord, the king rejoices in Thy strength; how Thy help fills him with gladness!

Desidérium cordis eius tribuísti ei * et voluntátem labiórum eius non denegásti.

Thou gavest him what his heart desired, Thou didst not refuse what his lips asked.

Quóniam prævenísti eum in benedictiónibus dulcédinis; * posuísti in cápite eius corónam de auro puríssimo.

For Thou hast warned him of exquisite blessings, Thou hast put on his head a crown of pure gold.

Afflictio iusti et exauditio

The distress of the righteous is answered.

Clamavit Iesus voce magna «Eli, Eli, lama sabachtani» (Mt 27,46)

Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?"

Deus, Deus meus, quare me dereliquísti? * Longe a salúte mea verba rúgitus mei.

O God, my God, wherefore have Thou forsaken me? I groan, and salvation remains far from me!

Deus meus, clamo per diem, et non exáudis, * et nocte, et non est réquies mihi.

My God, I cry during the day, and Thou dost not hearken unto me; and during the night, no rest for me.

Tu autem sanctus es, * qui hábitas in láudibus Israel.

But Thou dwellest in the sanctuary; Thou who are the praise of Israel.

In te speravérunt patres nostri, * speravérunt, et liberásti eos;

Our fathers hoped in Thou; they have hoped, and Thou hast delivered them.

He hoped that the Lord would deliver him; that He may save him, since He loveth him.

Yes, it is Thou who have taken me out of my mother's womb; Thou hast been my hope since the time when I sucked her breasts.

When I came out of her womb, I was thrown on thy knees; since I left his womb, thou art my God.

Do not withdraw from me, for temptation is at hand, and there is no one to help me.

Many young bulls surrounded me; fat bulls have besieged me.

They opened their mouths unto me, like a rapturous and roaring lion.

I spread out like water, and all my bones broke apart.

My heart has become like melted wax in the middle of my bowels.

My strength has dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue has clung to my palate; and Thou hast led me unto the dust of the grave.

For many dogs have surrounded me; a band of scoundrels has besieged me.

Fodérunt manus meas et pedes meos, * et dinumerávi ómnia ossa mea.

They pierced my hands and feet, they counted all my bones.

Ipsi vero consideravérunt et inspexérunt me; † divisérunt sibi vestiménta mea * et super vestem meam misérunt sortem.

They looked at me and looked at me. They divided my clothes amongst themselves, and they cast lots on my tunic.

Tu autem, Dómine, ne elongáveris; * fortitúdo mea, ad adiuvándum me festína.

But Thou, Lord, tarry not; my strength, hasten to help me.

Deliver, O God, my soul from the sword, and my life from the power of the dog.

Thou who fear the Lord, praise Him; all the race of Jacob, glorify Him.

Let the whole race of Israel fear Him, forasmuch as He hath not despised or despised the supplication of the poor,

and that He hath not turned His face away from me; but that He heard me when I cried out to Him.

Apud te laus mea in ecclésia magna; * vota mea reddam in conspéctu timéntium eum.

I will praise Thee in a great assembly; I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who fear Him.

Edent páuperes et saturabúntur; † et laudábunt Dóminum, qui requírunt eum: * “Vívant corda eórum in sǽculum sǽculi!”

The poor will eat and be filled, and those who seek the Lord will praise Him; their hearts will live forevermore and ever.

Reminiscéntur et converténtur ad Dóminum univérsi fines terræ, * et adorábunt in conspéctu eíus univérsæ famíliæ géntium.

All the ends of the earth will keep in remembrance the Lord and be converted to Him; and all the families of the nations will worship Him in His presence;

Quóniam Dómini est regnum, * et ipse dominábitur géntium.

for the kingdom belongs unto the Lord, and He shall rule over the nations.

Ipsum solum adorábunt omnes, qui dórmiunt in terra; * in conspéctu eíus prócident omnes, qui descéndunt in púlverem.

All the rich of the earth have eaten and worshipped; all those who descend into the earth will bow down to Him.

Ánima autem mea illi vivet, * et semen meum sérviet ipsi.

And my soul will live for Him, and my seed will serve Him.

Narrábitur de Dómino generatióni ventúræ; † et annuntiábunt iustítiam eíus pópulo, * qui nascétur: “Hæc fecit Dóminus!”

The seed that is to come will be announced unto the Lord, and the heavens will declare His righteousness unto the people that are to be born, and whom the Lord has made.
