Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Enlighten my understanding, inflame my love, so that I may recite this office with respect, attention, and devotion, and merit to be heard in the presence of Thy divine majesty. The Lord is my protector

He lay down and fell asleep, and He rose again because the Lord sustained Him.

Dómine, quid multiplicáti sunt, qui tríbulant me? * Multi insúrgunt advérsum me,

O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.

Many say to my soul: * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”

Lord, the king rejoices in Thy strength; how Thy help fills him with gladness!

Desidérium cordis eius tribuísti ei * et voluntátem labiórum eius non denegásti.

Thou gavest him what his heart desired, Thou didst not refuse what his lips asked.

Afflictio iusti et exauditio

The distress of the righteous is answered.

Clamavit Iesus voce magna «Eli, Eli, lama sabachtani» (Mt 27,46)

Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?"

Deus, Deus meus, quare me dereliquísti? * Longe a salúte mea verba rúgitus mei.

O God, my God, wherefore have Thou forsaken me? I groan, and salvation remains far from me!

Deus meus, clamo per diem, et non exáudis, * et nocte, et non est réquies mihi.

My God, I cry during the day, and Thou dost not hearken unto me; and during the night, no rest for me.

But Thou dwellest in the sanctuary; Thou who are the praise of Israel.

For many dogs have surrounded me; a band of scoundrels has besieged me.

I will praise Thee in a great assembly; I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who fear Him.

Edent páuperes et saturabúntur; † et laudábunt Dóminum, qui requírunt eum: * “Vívant corda eórum in sǽculum sǽculi!”

The poor will eat and be filled, and those who seek the Lord will praise Him; their hearts will live forevermore and ever.

Reminiscéntur et converténtur ad Dóminum univérsi fines terræ, * et adorábunt in conspéctu eíus univérsæ famíliæ géntium.

All the ends of the earth will keep in remembrance the Lord and be converted to Him; and all the families of the nations will worship Him in His presence;

Quóniam Dómini est regnum, * et ipse dominábitur géntium.

for the kingdom belongs unto the Lord, and He shall rule over the nations.

Ipsum solum adorábunt omnes, qui dórmiunt in terra; * in conspéctu eíus prócident omnes, qui descéndunt in púlverem.

All the rich of the earth have eaten and worshipped; all those who descend into the earth will bow down to Him.

Ánima autem mea illi vivet, * et semen meum sérviet ipsi.

And my soul will live for Him, and my seed will serve Him.

Narrábitur de Dómino generatióni ventúræ; † et annuntiábunt iustítiam eíus pópulo, * qui nascétur: “Hæc fecit Dóminus!”

The seed that is to come will be announced unto the Lord, and the heavens will declare His righteousness unto the people that are to be born, and whom the Lord has made.

Confidence of the innocent and prayer
