1. On this day, the Church remembers the entry of Christ the Lord into Jerusalem to consummate his Paschal Mystery. For this reason, in all Masses, the Lord's entry is remembered in the following way: either by the procession or solemn entry before the main Mass, or by the simple entry before the remaining Masses. The solemn entry, but not the procession, can be repeated before these masses celebrated with a great concourse of the people.
It is fitting that, when neither the procession nor the solemn entry can be made, there should be a celebration of the word of God in relation unto the Messianic entry and the Passion of the Lord, either on Saturday at the evening hour or on Sunday at the most opportune hour.

Dear Brethren, after having prepared our hearts since the beginning of Lent with works of penance and charity, we are gathered today with the whole Church to inaugurate our annual celebration of the Paschal Mystery of the Passion and Resurrection of Our Lord who, in order to accomplish it, entered his city of Jerusalem.
For this reason, remembering with faith and devotion this saving entry, let us follow the Lord so that, sharing by grace in the merits of the cross, we may merit to have in the resurrection and in life.
6. Post monitionem, sacerdos dicit unam ex sequentibus orationibus, manibus extensis.
6. After the monition, the priest says one of the following prayers with outstretched hands.

7. Then the deacon, or if there is none, the priest, proclaims in the usual way the Gospel of the Lord's entry according to one of the four Gospels. If it is appropriate, we can praise them.

In illo témpore: Præcedébat Iesus ascéndens Hierosólymam. At illi dixérunt: „Dóminus eum necessárium habet“. 8. Post Evangelium, haberi potest brevis homilia. Ad inchoandam autem processionem, fieri potest a sacerdote vel a diacono vel a ministro laico monitio, his vel similibus verbis expressa:
8. After the Gospel, a brief homily can be given. To begin the procession, a warning may be given by the priest, deacon, or lay minister, in the following manner or with other words:
Imitémur, fratres caríssimi, turbas acclamántes Iesum, et procedámus in pace.

In the name of Christ, Amen.
9. And the procession, according unto the usual custom, begins towards the church where the Mass is to be celebrated. If incense is used, the thurifer with the steaming censer precedes, followed by the acolyte or another minister who carries the cross decorated with branches and palms according unto the customs of the place, betwixt two ministers with lighted candles. Then follows the deacon carrying the book of the Gospels, the priest with the ministers and, behind them, all the faithful, branches in hand. Whilst the procession is in advance, the schola sings with the people the following song, or other appropriate songs in honor of Christ the King:

r. Ingrediénte Dómino in sanctam civitátem, Hebræórum púeri, resurrectiónem vitæ pronuntiántes, * Cum ramis palmárum: Hosánna, clamábant, in excélsis. v.
r. When the Lord entered the holy city, the children of the Hebrews, proclaiming the resurrection of life, * With palm branches cried out, Hosanna in the highest.
v. When the people heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they went out to meet him. * With twigs.
When the priest arrives at the altar, he venerates him and, if appropriate, incenses him. Then he goeth unto the seat where he taketh off the cope, if he hath worn it, and puts on the chasuble. Omitting the other initial rites of the Mass, and, if fitting, the Kyrie, he saith the collection of the Mass, which then continues in the usual way.
Forma secunda: Introitus sollemnis
Second form: Solemn entrance
12. Ubi processio extra ecclesiam fieri nequit, ingressus Domini celebratur intra ecclesiam per introitum sollemnem ante Missam principalem.
12. When it is not possible to make the procession outside the church, the entry of the Lord is celebrated inside the church, by means of a solemn entrance before the main Mass.
13. Fideles congregantur vel ante portam ecclesiæ vel in ipsa ecclesia, ramos in manibus tenentes. Sacerdos et ministri et aliqua deputatio fidelium accedunt ad locum aptum ecclesiæ, extra presbyterium, ubi saltem maior pars fidelium ritum conspicere possit.
13. The faithful gather at the door of the church or in the church itself, holding the branches in their hands. The priest, the ministers, and a few faithful deputies go to a suitable place in the church, outside the sanctuary, where most of the faithful can behold the rite.
14. Whilst the priest is going unto the place indicated, the antiphon is sung: Hosanna or another appropriate song. At this place, the palms are blessed and the gospel of the Lord's entry into Jerusalem is proclaimed, as stated above (nn 5-7). After the Gospel, the priest with the ministers and some of the faithful advance unto the sanctuary in the church; during this time, the responsory Ingrediénte Dómino (n. 10) is sung, or another appropriate song.
15. When he arrives at the altar, the priest venerates it. Then they go unto the headquarters and, omitting the initial rites of the Mass and, if appropriate, the Kyrie, say the prayer of the collect. Then the Mass continues in the usual way.
Forma tertia: Introitus simplex
Third Form: Single Entry
16. In omnibus aliis Missis huius dominicæ in quibus non habetur introitus sollemnis, fit memoria ingressus Domini in Ierusalem per introitum simplicem.
16. At all the other Masses on this Sunday where the solemn entry is not made, the Lord's entry into Jerusalem is commemorated by the simple entrance.
Post crucis signum salutat populum; deinde Missam prosequitur more solito.
Whilst the priest goes unto the altar, the entrance antiphon is sung with the psalm (n.18) or another song on the same theme. The priest, after arriving at the altar, venerated him and went unto the seat. After the sign of the cross, he greets the people; Then he continues the Mass as usual.
In other Masses, where the entrance chant cannot be performed, the priest, as soon as he hath arrived at the altar and has venerated it, greets the people, reads the entrance antiphon and continues the Mass as usual.
18. Ant. ad introitum Cf. Io 12, 1.12-13; Ps 23, 9-10
18. Ant. unto the introit
Ante sex dies sollémnis Paschæ, quando venit Dóminus in civitátem Ierúsalem, occurrérunt ei púeri et in mánibus portábant ramos palmárum et clamábant voce magna, dicéntes:
* Hosánna in excélsis: Benedíctus, qui venísti in multitúdine misericórdiæ tuæ.
Attóllite, portæ, cápita vestra, et elevámini, portæ æternáles, et introíbit rex glóriæ. Quis est iste rex glóriæ? Dóminus virtútum ipse est rex glóriæ.
* Hosánna in excélsis: Benedíctus, qui venísti in multitúdine misericórdiæ tuæ.
* Hosánna in excélsis: Benedíctus, qui venísti in multitúdine misericórdiæ tuæ.
Attóllite, portæ, cápita vestra, et elevámini, portæ æternáles, et introíbit rex glóriæ. Quis est iste rex glóriæ? Dóminus virtútum ipse est rex glóriæ.
* Hosánna in excélsis: Benedíctus, qui venísti in multitúdine misericórdiæ tuæ.
Six days before the Passover, when Jesus came to Jerusalem, children ran to Him and took palm branches, crying:
* Hosanna in heaven: Blessed be He who came in the abundance of Thy mercies.
Lift up thy gates, O princes, and lift yourselves up, eternal gates, and the king of glory will enter.
Who is this king of glory? The Lord of hosts is Himself this king of glory.
* Hosanna in heaven: Blessed be He who came in the abundance of Thy mercies.
AD MISSAM
AT MASS
19. Post processionem vel introitum sollemnem sacerdos Missam incipit a collecta.
19. After the procession or solemn entry, the priest begins from the collection.

Collecta
Eternal and almighty God, in order to show mankind what abasement it ought to imitate, Thou willed that our Saviour, in a body like ours, should suffer the death of the cross: grant us this grace to retain the teachings of His Passion and to share in His resurrection.
Lectio I
Word of the Lord. r. Let us give thanks to God.

Deus, Deus meus, réspice in me: quare me dereliquísti ?
v. Longe a salúte mea verba delictórum meórum.
O my God, I shall cry by day and Thou wilt not hear: and by night, and it shall not be reputed as folly in me.
v. Tu autem in sancto hábitas, laus Israël.
But Thou dwellest in the holy place, O Thou Praise of Israel.
v. In te speravérunt patres nostri: speravérunt, et liberásti eos.
In Thee our fathers have hoped: they have hoped, and Thou hast delivered them.
They cried unto Thee, and were delivered: they trusted in Thee, and were not confounded.
But I am a worm and no man: a reproach of men, and the outcast of the people.
v. Omnes, qui vidébant me, aspernabántur me: locúti sunt lábiis, et movérunt caput.
v. Sperávit in Dómino, erípiat eum: salvum fáciat eum, quóniam vult eum.
He trusted the Lord, let Him rescue him: let Him deliver him, seeing He delighteth in him.
v. Ipsi vero consideravérunt, et inspexérunt me: divisérunt sibi vestiménta mea, et super vestem meam misérunt sortem.
They look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and upon my vesture do they cast lots.
v. Líbera me de ore leónis: et a córnibus unicórnium humilitátem meam.
Save me from the lion's mouth: and my affliction from the horns of the unicorns.
v. Qui timétis Dóminum, laudáte eum: univérsum semen Iacob, magnificáte eum.
Ye that fear the Lord, praise Him: all ye seed of Jacob, glorify Him.
", in glóriam Dei Patris.
Verbum Dómini. r. Deo grátias.
Word of the Lord. r. Let us give thanks to God.

21. Historia Passionis Domini legitur absque luminaribus et absque incenso, sine salutatione et signatione libri. Legitur autem a diacono vel, ipso deficiente, a sacerdote.
At illi dixérunt: «Nihil».
At illi dixérunt: «Dómine, ecce gládii duo hic».
At ille dixit eis: «Satis est».
Súrgite, oráte ne intrétis in tentatiónem».
Petrus vero sequebátur a longe.
At ille negávit eum dicens: «Múlier, non novi illum».
At illi invalescébant dicéntes: «Cómmovet pópulum docens per univérsam Iudǽam, et incípiens a Galilǽa usque huc».
