Joy and hope in the Lord

Sicuti socii passionum estis, sic eritis et consolationis (2 Cor 1, 7).

As you share in our sufferings, you also share in our consolation (2 Cor 1:7).

In converténdo Dóminus captivitátem Sion, * facti sumus quasi somniántes.

When the Lord brought back the captivity of Sion, * we became like men comforted.

Tunc replétum est gáudio os nostrum, * et lingua nostra exsultatióne.

Then was our mouth filled with gladness, * and our tongue with joy.

Tunc dicébant inter gentes: * « Magnificávit Dóminus fácere cum eis. »

Then shall they say among the Gentiles: * The Lord hath done great things for them.

Magnificávit Dóminus fácere nobíscum; * facti sumus lætántes.

The Lord hath done great things for us: * we are become joyful.

Convérte, Dómine, captivitátem nostram, * sicut torréntes in austro.

Turn again our captivity, O Lord, * as a stream in the south.

Without the Lord, work is in vain

Dei ædificatio estis (1 Cor 3, 9).

In God you are built up (1 Cor 3:9).

Nisi Dóminus ædificáverit domum, * in vanum labórant, qui ædíficant eam.

Unless the Lord build the house, * they labour in vain that build it.

Nisi Dóminus custodíerit civitátem, * frustra vígilat, qui custódit eam.

Unless the Lord keep the city, * he watcheth in vain that keepeth it.

Vanum est vobis ante lucem súrgere et sero quiéscere, † qui manducátis panem labóris, * quia dabit diléctis suis somnum.

It is vain for you to rise before light, and to rise after you have sat: † ye that eat the bread of sorrow, * when he shall give sleep to his beloved.

Blessed are all they that fear the Lord: * that walk in his ways.

Labores manuum tuarum manducabis, * beatus es, et bene tibi erit.

For thou shalt eat the labours of thy hands: * blessed art thou, and it shall be well with thee.

Uxor tua sicut vitis fructifera * in lateribus domus tuæ;

Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine * on the sides of thy house.
