Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Enlighten my understanding, inflame my love, so that I may recite this office with respect, attention, and devotion, and merit to be heard in the presence of Thy divine majesty. The Lord is my protector

He lay down and fell asleep, and He rose again because the Lord sustained Him.

O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.

Many say to my soul: * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”

Do not fear those who kill the body (Mt 10:28).

The Lord, supreme judge

Deposuit potentes de sede et exaltavit humiles (Lc 1, 52).

He removes the mighty from their thrones and exalts the humble (Lk 1:52).

Confitébimur tibi, Deus; † confitébimur et invocábimus nomen tuum: *narrábimus mirabília tua.

We will praise Thou, O God; we will praise Thou, and we will call on Thy name; we will tell of Thy wonders.

Cum statúero tempus, *ego iustítias iudicábo.

In the time that I have appointed, I will do perfect justice.

Remembering God's works

In omnibus tribulationem patimur, sed non angustiamur (2 Cor 4, 8).

We are pressed on every side, but not overwhelmed (2 Cor 4:8).

Voce mea ad Dóminum clamávi; * voce mea ad Deum, et inténdit mihi.

My voice cries out to God; my voice is raised to God and He heareth me.

In die tribulatiónis meæ Deum exquisívi, † manus meæ nocte expánsæ sunt * et non fatigántur.

In the day of my trouble, I seek the Lord; my hands are stretched out at night without tiring.

My soul refuses all consolation, I keep in remembrance God, and I groan, I meditate, and my spirit is depressed.

Is His goodness exhausted for ever, is it done with His promises for future ages?

Aut obliviscétur miseréri Deus, * aut continébit in ira sua misericórdias suas?

Has God forgotten His mercy, has He withdrawn His mercy in His wrath?

Et dixi: «Hoc vulnus meum, * mutátio déxteræ Excélsi».

And I said, "Now I'm starting. This change comes from the right hand of the Most High."

Memor ero óperum Dómini, * memor ero ab inítio mirabílium tuórum.

I want to keep in remembrance the works of the Lord, for I keep in remembrance Thy wonders of old,

Et meditábor in ómnibus opéribus tuis * et in adinventiónibus tuis exercébor.

I want to reflect on all Thy works, and meditate on Thy great deeds.

O God, Thy ways are holy: what God is great like our God?

Thou art the God who works wonders; Thou hast manifested Thy power amongst the nations.

Atténdite, pópule meus, doctrínam meam; * inclináte aurem vestram in verba oris mei.

My people, hearken unto My doctrine; give ear unto the words of My mouth.

Apériam in parábolis os meum, * éloquar arcána ætátis antíquæ.

I will open my mouth to speak in parables; I will speak of what has been hidden since ancient times.

Quanta audívimus et cognóvimus ea, † et patres nostri narravérunt nobis, * non occultábimus a fíliis eórum,

What we have heard and learned, and what our fathers have told us, they have not hidden from their children

nor to their posterity. They have published the praises of the Lord, the deeds of His power, and the wonders He hath done.

will rise up after them, and will also tell it to their children, so that they may put their hope in God

et non obliviscántur óperum Dei * et mandáta eíus custódiant.

that they do not forget the works of God, and that they seek His commandments;

Ne fiant sicut patres eórum, * generátio rebéllis et exásperans;

lest they become, like their fathers, an evil and exasperating race;

generátio, quæ non firmávit cor suum, * et non fuit fidélis Deo spíritus eíus.

a race that has not kept its heart upright, and whose spirit has not remained faithful to God.

Fílii Éphraim, intendéntes et mitténtes arcum, * convérsi sunt in die belli.

The sons of Ephraim, skilled in drawing the bow and drawing from it, turned their backs on the day of battle.

Non custodiérunt testaméntum Dei * et in lege eíus renuérunt ambuláre.

They did not keep the covenant made with God, and did not want to walk in His law.

Et oblíti sunt factórum eíus * et mirabílium eíus, quæ osténdit eis.

They have forgotten His blessings, and the wonders He had shown them.

Before their fathers He did wonders in the land of Egypt, in the plain of Tanis.

Will He also be able to give bread, or prepare a table for His people?

When the Lord heard, He waited; and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger arose against Israel;

forasmuch as they had not had faith in God, and had not hoped for His help.

And He commanded the clouds from above, and He opened the gates of heaven.

And He rained manna upon them to feed them, and He gave them bread from heaven.

The man ate the bread of angels; He sent them plenty of provisions.

He turned the south wind in the sky, and sent the wind from Africa by His power.

They fell in the middle of their camp, around their tents.

And they ate, and were filled to excess, and He granted them what they desired:

they were not frustrated in their desire. The meats were still in their mouths,

et ira Dei ascéndit super eos † et óccidit pingues eórum * et eléctos Israel prostrávit.

when the wrath of God rose up against them. And He killed the strongest of them, and He brought down the elite of Israel.

In ómnibus his peccavérunt adhuc * et non credidérunt in mirabílibus eíus;

After all this they sinned anon, and they had no faith in His wonders.

et consúmpsit in hálitu dies eórum * et annos eórum cum festinatióne.

Then their days passed like a breath, and their years precipitated their course.

Cum occíderet eos, quærébant eum * et convérsi veniébant dilúculo ad eum;

When He put them to death, they sought Him, and they turned around, and they hastened to return to Him.

et rememoráti sunt quia Deus adiútor est eórum, * et Deus Excélsus redémptor eórum est.

They remembered that God was their defender, and that the Most High God was their savior.

He remembered that they were only flesh, a breath that passes and does not return.

How oftentimes did they anger Him in the wilderness, and stir up His wrath in the dry plain!

And they began anon to tempt God, and to anger the Holy One of Israel.

They did not keep in remembrance what His hand had done on the day He delivered them from the hands of the oppressor.

when He made His signs break out in Egypt, and His wonders in the plain of Tanis.

They angered His anger on their hills, and they provoked His jealousy by their idols.

Audívit Deus et exársit * et sprevit valde Israel.

God heard, and He despised Israel, and reduced them unto the last humiliation.

Et réppulit habitáculum Silo *, tabernáculum, ubi habitávit in homínibus.

And He rejected the tabernacle of Shiloh, His tabernacle where He had dwelt amongst men.

Et trádidit in captivitátem virtútem suam * et pulchritúdinem suam in manus inimíci.

And He gave His strength into captivity, and His glory into the hands of the enemy.

Et conclúsit in gládio pópulum suum * et in hereditátem suam exársit.

And He delivered His people unto the sword, and despised His inheritance.

The fire devoured their young men, and their virgins were not married.

And the Lord awoke like a sleeping man, and like a hero overexcited by wine.

He smote His enemies from behind, and covered them with eternal shame.

And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph, and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.

sed elégit tribum Iúdæ, * montem Sion, quem diléxit.

But He chooses the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion that He loved.

Et ædificávit sicut excélsum sanctuárium suum, * sicut terram, quam fundávit in sǽcula.

And He built His sanctuary as on the top of the heavens, as a land that He founded centuries ago.

Et elégit David servum suum † et sústulit eum de grégibus óvium, *de post fetántes accépit eum:

He chose David His servant, and brought him out of the flocks of sheep; He took him from behind the mother sheep,

páscere Iácob pópulum suum * et Israel hereditátem suam.

that he might be the shepherd of His servant Jacob, and of Israel His inheritance.

Si cognovisses et tu... quæ ad pacem tibi! (Lc 19, 42).

If you too had known what was for (your) peace (Lk 19:42).

Deus, venérunt gentes in hereditátem tuam, † polluérunt templum sanctum tuum, * posuérunt Ierúsalem in ruínas.

O God, the nations have attacked Thy inheritance, they have desecrated Thy holy temple, they have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins.

Dedérunt morticína servórum tuórum escas volatílibus cæli, * carnes sanctórum tuórum béstiis terræ.

They have given the corpses of Thy servants unto the fowls of the air, and the flesh of Thy faithful unto the beasts of the earth.

[Pour out Thy wrath on the nations that have not known Thou, on the kingdoms that have not called upon Thou.

be merciful to our sins for Thy name's sake.

Wherefore should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Let it be known amongst the nations, and before our eyes, the vengeance that Thou takest from the blood of Thy servants, when it is shed.

Let the groans of the captives ascend to Thee; according unto the greatness of Thy arm, save those who are about to perish.

God stands in the assembly of the Almighty; in the midst of the gods He giveth his judgment:

Cognoscant hostes contra Israel coniurati, quod Dominus solus Altissimus in omni terra.

Let the enemies gathered against Israel know that the Lord alone is the Most High over all the earth.

Deus, ne quiéscas, ne táceas * neque compescáris, Deus,

Deus, do not rest, do not be silent, do not hold back, O God,

quóniam ecce inimíci tui fremuérunt, * et, qui odérunt te, extulérunt caput.

for behold, Thy enemies have trembled, and those who hate Thou hast lifted up their heads.

Against Thy people they hatched a plot and they plotted against those whom Thou hadst reserved for Thou.

Fac illis sicut Mádian et Sísaræ, * sicut Iábin in torrénte Cison.

Do with them as with Midian and Sisara, as Iabin did with the torrent of Cison.

Disperiérunt in Endor, * facti sunt ut stercus super terram.

They were scattered in Endor, they became like dung on the earth.

Pone duces eórum sicut Oreb et Zeb † et Zébee et Sálmana, omnes príncipes eórum, qui dixérunt: * “Hereditáte possideámus páscua Dei!”

Push their leaders like Oreb and Zeb, and Zeba and Salman, all their princes, they who said: "By inheritance we possess the pastures of God!"

Deus meus, pone illos ut rotam * et sicut stípulam ante ventum.

My God, make them like a wheel like a straw in the wind.

Sicut ignis, qui combúrit silvam, * et sicut flamma dévorans montes,

Like fire, which devours the forest, and like the flame that devours the mountains,

Fill their faces with confusion, and they will seek Thy name, Lord.

He taketh up his flock like sheep and leads them like a flock into the desert. He leads them in hope, and they fear not, and the sea covers their enemies.

He introduces them unto the confines of His holiness, unto the mountain that His right hand has chosen for Himself.

He drives out the nations before them and divides the land according unto the line of inheritance, and He maketh the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.

And they tempted and tested the Most High God, and they did not keep his testimonies.

Recessérunt et prævaricáti sunt, † quemádmodum patres eórum; * convérsi sunt retro ut arcus pravus.

They went away, perverted themselves, just like their fathers; they recoiled, like a crooked bow.

In iram concitavérunt eum in cóllibus suis * et in sculptílibus suis ad æmulatiónem eum provocavérunt.

They stirred up His wrath on their hills, and by their carvings they provoked Him to jealousy.

Audívit Deus et exársit * et sprevit valde Israel.

God heard and was inflamed, and He rejected Israel strongly.

Et réppulit habitáculum Silo *, tabernáculum, ubi habitávit in homínibus.

He pushed back the dwelling of Shiloh, the tent where He had dwelt amongst men.

Et trádidit in captivitátem virtútem suam * et pulchritúdinem suam in manus inimíci.

He delivered into captivity His strength and beauty into the hands of the enemies.

Et conclúsit in gládio pópulum suum * et in hereditátem suam exársit.

He shut up His people with the sword and was inflamed against His inheritance.

Iuvénes eórum comédit ignis, * et vírgines eórum non sunt desponsátæ.

The fire devoured their young men, and their virgins were never married.

Sacerdótes eórum in gládio cecidérunt, * et víduæ eórum non plorabántur.

Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows did not lament.

Et excitátus est tamquam dórmiens Dóminus, * tamquam potens crapulátus a vino.

And the Lord stood up like one who was sleeping, like a mighty [warrior] [until such time as then] stunned by wine.

Et percússit inimícos suos in posterióra, * oppróbrium sempitérnum dedit illis.

And He struck His enemies from behind, He inflicted eternal reproach on them.

Et réppulit tabernáculum Ióseph * et tribum Éphraim non elégit,

And He rejected Joseph's tent, and He did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.

sed elégit tribum Iúdæ, * montem Sion, quem diléxit.

But He chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, whom He loveth.

Et ædificávit sicut excélsum sanctuárium suum, * sicut terram, quam fundávit in sǽcula.

And He built His sanctuary as a high place, as the land He founded for ever.

Et elégit David servum suum † et sústulit eum de grégibus óvium, *de post fetántes accépit eum:

And He chose David his servant, and took him out of the flocks of sheep, and out of the back of the pregnant sheep He took him.

Desire for God's temple

Non habemus hic manentem civitatem, sed futuram inquirimus (Hebr 13, 14).

We have no permanent city here below, but we seek the one to come (Hebr 13, 14).

Quam dilécta tabernácula tua, Dómine virtútum! * Concupíscit et déficit ánima mea in átria Dómini

How lovable is Thy dwelling, Lord of hosts! My soul is exhausted by sighing in the courts of the Lord;

Cor meum et caro mea * exsultavérunt in Deum vivum.

my heart and my flesh leap unto the living God.

Etenim passer invénit sibi domum, † et turtur nidum sibi, ubi ponat pullos suos: * altária tua, Dómine virtútum, rex meus et Deus meus.

Even the sparrow finds a dwelling, and the swallow a nest where it lays its young: Thy altars, Lord of hosts, my king and my God.

Beáti, qui hábitant in domo tua: * in perpétuum laudábunt te.

Blessed are those who dwell in Thy house: they can praise Thou forevermore.

Beátus vir, cuius est auxílium abs te, * ascensiónes in corde suo dispósuit.

Blessed are the men who have their strength in Thou, they think only of the holy ascents.

Our salvation is near

In terram delapso Salvatore nostro, benedixit Deus terram suam (Origene).

On earth, through the descent of the Redeemer, God has showered blessing on His land (Origen).

Complacuísti tibi, Dómine, in terra tua, * convertísti captivitátem Iacob.

Thou hast been favorable to Thy country, Lord, Thou hast brought back Jacob's captives.

Remisísti iniquitátem plebis tuæ, * operuísti ómnia peccáta eórum.

Thou hast forgiven iniquity to Thy people, Thou hast covered all their sins.

Contraxísti omnem iram tuam, * revertísti a furóre indignatiónis tuæ.
