Amen.
  Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Enlighten my understanding, inflame my love, so that I may recite this office with respect, attention, and devotion, and merit to be heard in the presence of Thy divine majesty. Psalm 3
  Dominus protector meus
The Lord is my protector
  Dormivit et somnum cepit et resurrexit, quoniam Dominus suscepit eum (S. Irenæus).
He lay down and fell asleep, and He rose again because the Lord sustained Him.
  Dómine, quid multiplicáti sunt, qui tríbulant me? * Multi insúrgunt advérsum me,
  O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.
  multi dicunt ánimæ meæ: * «Non est salus ipsi in Deo».
  Many say to my soul: * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”
  But thou, O Lord, art my protector, * my glory, and the lifter up of my head.
  I have cried to the Lord with my voice, * and he hath heard me from his holy mountain.
  Ego obdormívi et soporátus sum,> * exsurréxi, quia Dóminus suscépit me.
  I have slept and have taken my rest, * and I have risen up, because the Lord hath protected me.
  Non timébo mília pópuli circumdántis me. * Exsúrge, Dómine, salvum me fac, Deus meus;
  I will not fear thousands of the people that surround me. * Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God.
  quóniam tu percussísti in maxíllam omnes adversántes mihi, * dentes peccatórum contrivísti.
  For thou hast struck all them who are my adversaries without cause; * thou hast broken the teeth of sinners.
  Salvation is of the Lord, * and thy blessing is upon thy people.
  Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
  Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
  As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, and ever shall be. Amen.

  Hymnus

  That so, in nature’s triple frame, Each heavenly and each earthly name, And things in hell’s abyss abhorred, May bend the knee and own Him Lord.
  Tremunt vidéntes ángeli versam vicem mortálium; culpat caro, purgat caro, regnat caro Verbum Dei.

  Tu, Christe, nostrum gáudium, manens perénne præ ́ mium, mundi regis qui fábricam, mundána vincens gáudia.

  Hinc te precántes quæsumus, ignósce culpis ómnibus et corda sursum súbleva ad te supérna grátia,
  To Thee we therefore humbly pray That Thou wouldst purge our sins away, And draw our hearts by cords of grace To Thy celestial dwelling-place.
  So when the Judgment day shall come, And all must rise to meet their doom, Thou wilt remit the debts we owe, And our lost crowns again bestow.
Amen.

  Adversus insurgentes oratio
Prayer against proud adversaries
  Hæ voces Salvatoris pietatem erga Patrem suum omnes edoceant (Eusebius Cæsariensis).
These are the words of the Lord, who teaches everyone piety towards His Father (Eusebius of Caesarea).
  Eripe me de inimícis meis, Deus meus, * et ab insurgéntibus in me prótege me.
  Deliver me from my enemies, O my God, protect me from my adversaries.
  Eripe me de operántibus iniquitátem * et de viris sánguinum salva me.
  Deliver me from those who work iniquity, and save me from men of blood.
  Quia ecce insidiáti sunt ánimæ meæ, * irruérunt in me fortes.
  For behold, they are on the lookout to take my life; violent men are plotting against me.
  Without my being guilty, without my having sinned, Lord, in spite of my innocence, they run and lie in ambush.
  Exsúrge in occúrsum meum et vide; fortitúdo mea, tibi atténdam; * quia, Deus, præsídium meum es.
  Awake, come to meet me and behold; my strength, it is to Thou that I will behold, for God is my fortress.
  [et tu, Dómine, Deus virtútum, Deus Israel, * evígila ad visitándas omnes gentes;
  [Thou, Lord, God of hosts, God of Israel, arise to punish all nations,
  non misereáris ómnibus, * qui infidéliter operántur.
  Have no mercy on these traitors and malefactors!
  They come back in the evening, they growl like a dog, they go around the city.
  Behold, their mouths vomit insult, there are swords on their lips: "Who is it that hears?" they say.
  Et tu, Dómine, deridébis eos, * subsannábis omnes gentes.
  And thou, Lord, laugh at them, mock all nations!
  Fortitúdo mea, tibi atténdam, * quia, Deus, præsídium meum es.
  My strength is to Thou that I will behold, for God is my fortress.
  Deus meus, misericórdia eíus prævéniet me. * Deus fáciet, ut despíciam inimícos meos.
  The God who is propitious unto me will come to meet me; God will make me contemplate my enemies.
  [Ne óccidas eos, * ne quando obliviscátur pópulus meus;
  [Kill not them, lest my people forget;
  dispérge illos in virtúte tua et prostérne eos, * protéctor meus, Dómine.
  make them wander by thy power and overthrow them, O Lord, our shield.
  Peccátum oris eórum, sermo labiórum ipsórum, * et comprehendántur in supérbia sua.
  Their mouths sin at every word of their lips; that they be caught up in their own pride,
  Propter exsecratiónem et mendácium, * quod loquúntur,
  forasmuch as of the curses and lies they speak!
  Destroy them in thy fury, destroy them, and let them be no more; let them know that God reigns over Jacob unto the ends of the earth!
  They return in the evening; they growl like a dog, they go round the city.
  They wander to and fro, looking for their prey, and they growl if they are not satisfied.]
  Deus meus, misericórdia eius prævéniet me. * Deus fáciet ut despíciam inimícos meos.
  My God, His mercy precedes me. God will cause me to contemplate the humiliation of my enemies.
  And I will sing of Thy strength, and in the morning I will praise Thy goodness,
  for Thou art my stronghold, a refuge in the day of my tribulation.
  Fortitúdo mea, tibi psallam, quia, Deus, præsídium meum es: * Deus meus misericórdia mea.
  O my strength, I will sing in Thy honor, for God is my fortress, my God, my mercy.
  Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

The Lord, confidence of the righteous

He has received life, the Risen One, for ever and ever (S. Irenaeus).
  Dómine in virtúte tua lætábitur rex, * et super salutáre tuum exsultábit veheménter.
  Lord, the king rejoices in Thy strength; how Thy help fills him with gladness!
  Thou gavest him what his heart desired, Thou didst not refuse what his lips asked.
  Quóniam prævenísti eum in benedictiónibus dulcédinis; * posuísti in cápite eius corónam de auro puríssimo.
  For Thou hast warned him of exquisite blessings, Thou hast put on his head a crown of pure gold.
  Vitam pétiit a te, et tribuísti ei, * longitúdinem diérum in sæculum et in sǽculum sǽculi.
  He asked thou for life, thou gavest it unto him, for long days forevermore and for ever.
  Magna est glória eius in salutári tuo, * magnificéntiam et decórem impónes super eum;
  Great is his glory, thanks to Thy help; Thou put on him splendor and magnificence.
  quóniam pones eum benedictiónem in sǽculum sǽculi, * lætificábis eum in gáudio ante vultum tuum.
  Thou makest it forevermore an object of blessings; Thou fill him with joy in front of thy face.
  For the king trusts in the Lord, and by the goodness of the Most High he doth not waver.

  [Thy hand, O king, will reach all thy enemies, thy right hand will reach those who hate thou.
  Pones eos ut clíbanum ignis in témpore vultus tui: Dóminus in ira sua deglútiet eos, * et devorábit eos ignis.
  Thou shalt make them like a fiery furnace on the day when thou show thy face; the Lord will destroy them in His wrath, and fire will devour them.

  Thou shalt wipe out their seed from the earth, and their descendants from the children of men.
  Quóniam intendérunt in te mala, * cogitavérunt consília: nihil potuérunt.
  They have prepared for thee destruction, they have devised evil designs, but they will be powerless.
  Quóniam pones eos dorsum, * arcus tuos tendes in vultum eórum.]
  For thou shalt turn thy back on them; with thy darts thou shalt aim at the forehead.]
  Exaltáre, Dómine, in virtúte tua; * cantábimus et psallémus virtútes tuas.

  De Epístula beáti Pauli apóstoli ad Ephésios 4, 1-24
  Lectio I

  r. Ascéndens Christus in altum, allelúia, captívam duxit captivitátem; * Dedit dona homínibus, allelúia, allelúia. v. Ascéndit Deus in iubilatióne, et Dóminus in voce tubæ. * Dedit.

  Lectio II

  Lectio III
  Hoc ígitur dico et testíficor in Dómino, ut iam non ambulétis sicut et gentes ámbulant in vanitáte sensus sui ténebris obscurátum habéntes intelléctum, alienáti a vita Dei propter ignorántiam quæ est in illis, propter cæcitátem cordis ipsórum; qui indoléntes semetípsos tradidérunt impudicítiæ in operatiónem immundítiæ omnis in avarítia.

  r. Introdúxit vos Dóminus in loco sancto suo, et vídimus fontem aquæ fluéntem lac et mel, * Et obtúlimus primítias, allelúia, allelúia. v. Introívimus in tabernáculum eius, adorávimus in loco ubi stetérunt pedes eius. * Et obtúlimus.

  Lectio IV

Glory to God in his justice
  Hic psalmus salutem mundi significat et fidem omnium gentium in ipsum (S. Athanasius).
This psalm signifies the salvation of the world and the faith of every nation in him (S. Athanasius).
  Dóminus regnávit! Exsúltet terra, * læténtur ínsulæ multæ.
  The Lord is king: let the earth rejoice, let the many islands rejoice.

  Quóniam tu Dóminus, Altíssimus super omnem terram, * nimis exaltátus es super omnes deos.
  For Thou, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth, and are supremely exalted above all the gods.
  Qui dilígitis Dóminum, odíte malum; custódit ipse ánimas sanctórum suórum, * de manu peccatóris liberábit eos.
  Thou who love the Lord, hate evil; He guards the souls of His faithful, He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
  Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the righteous in heart.
  Righteous, rejoice in the Lord, and give glory to His Holy Name.
Amen.

  Sanctus Dominus Deus noster
Lord God and Holy One.
You are seated above the Cherubim, You who renewed the state of the earth plunged in evil, by taking on our likeness (S. Athanasius).
  Dóminus regnávit! Commoveántur pópuli; * sedet super chérubim, moveátur terra.
  The Lord reigns! The people tremble; He is seated on the Cherubim; the earth is tottering.
  Dóminus in Sion magnus * et excélsus super omnes pópulos.
  The Lord is great in Zion, exalted above all peoples.
  Let them praise Thy great and dreadful name, for it is holy!
  Rex potens iudícium díligit: tu statuísti, quæ recta sunt, * iudícium et iustítiam in Iacob tu fecísti.
  Let us praise the power of the King who loves righteousness, Thou establish righteousness, Thou exercise righteousness and equity in Jacob.
  Exalt the Lord our God, and bow down before the stool of His feet, for He is holy!
  Moses and Aaron were amongst His priests, and Samuel amongst those who called on His name.
  They called on the Lord, and He heard them, He spake unto them in the pillar of cloud.

  Psalmus 102
Psalm 102
  Laus miserentis Domini
Praise to the merciful Lord
Through the bowels of our God's mercy, the rising sun has visited us from above
  Bénedic, ánima mea, Dómino, * et ómnia, quæ intra me sunt, nómini sancto eíus.
  My soul, bless the Lord, and may all that is within me bless His holy Name.
  Bénedic, ánima mea, Dómino * et noli oblivísci omnes retributiónes eíus.
  My soul, bless the Lord, and never forget all His blessings.
  Qui propitiátur ómnibus iniquitátibus tuis, * qui sanat omnes infirmitátes tuas;
  It is He who forgives all thy iniquities, and heals all thy diseases.
  qui rédimit de intéritu vitam tuam, * qui corónat te in misericórdia et miseratiónibus;
  It is He who redeems thy life from death, who crowns thou with mercy and graces.
  It is He who fulfills thy desires by showering thou with goods; thy youth will be renewed like that of the eagle.
  Fáciens iustítias Dóminus * et iudícium ómnibus iniúriam patiéntibus.
  The Lord has mercy, and He doth justice to all those who suffer violence (an injustice).
  Notas fecit vias suas Móysi, * fíliis Israel adinventiónes suas.
  He made known His ways to Moses, (and) His will unto the children of Israel.
  Miserátor et miséricors Dóminus, * longánimis et multæ misericórdiæ.
  The Lord is compassionate and merciful, patient (slow to punish) and very (good) merciful.
  He shall not be perpetually angry, and will not threaten endlessly.
  He hath not dealt with us according to our sins, nor has He punished us according to our iniquities.
  Quóniam, quantum exaltátur cælum a terra, * præváluit misericórdia eíus super timéntes eum;
  For as much as heaven is exalted above the earth, so He hath established (corroborated) His mercy upon those who fear Him.
  quantum distat ortus ab occidénte, * longe fecit a nobis iniquitátes nostras.
  As far as the east is removed from the west, so much has He removed our iniquities from us.
  As a father has compassion on His children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.
  Quóniam ipse cognóvit figméntum nostrum, * recordátus est quóniam pulvis sumus.
  For He knoweth (Himself) what we are made of; He remembered that we are naught but dust.
  Homo: sicut fenum dies eíus, * tamquam flos agri sic efflorébit.
  The days of man pass like grass; it will bloom like the flower of the field.
  Let a breath pass over him/her, and he/she is (she) no more, and the place he/she used to occupy no longer recognizes him.
  But the Lord's mercy extends from eternity to eternity upon those who fear Him. And His righteousness is poured out upon the children of the children (sons of the sons)
  of those who keep His covenant, and keep in remembrance His precepts (commandments), to fulfill them.
  Dóminus in cælo parávit sedem suam, * et regnum ipsíus ómnibus dominábitur.
  The Lord has prepared His throne in heaven, and all things will be subject to His dominion.
  Benedícite Dómino, omnes ángeli eíus, poténtes virtúte, faciéntes verbum illíus * in audiéndo vocem sermónum eíus.
  Bless the Lord, all of thee, His angels, who are mighty and strong (mighty in strength); who carry out His word, in obedience unto the voice of His commands.
  Benedícite Dómino, omnes virtútes eíus, * minístri eíus, qui fácitis voluntátem eíus.
  Bless the Lord, all of thee, His (heavenly) hosts; thou, His ministers, who do His will.
  Benedícite Dómino, ómnia ópera eíus, in omni loco dominatiónis eíus. * Bénedic, ánima mea, Dómino.
  Bless the Lord, all of thee, His works, in all the places of His dominion. My soul, bless the Lord.
Amen.
  Ant. Sedébit Dóminus rex in ætérnum, allelúia.
  Ant. The Lord will sit as King for eternity, hallelujah.
  v. Dóminus in Sion magnus, allelúia. r. Et excélsus super omnes pópulos, allelúia.

  Postea benedicat abbas:

  Ex Sermónibus sancti Leónis Magni papæ (Sermo 60, 1-2: SC 74, 135-137)
  Lectio I
Nam cum sanctæ mulíeres revolútum a monuménto lápidem, sepúlcrum córpore vácuum, et vivéntis Dómini testes ángelos nuntiárent, verba eárum apóstolis aliísque discípulis deliraméntis simília videbántur.

  r. * Rogo.

  Lectio II
  Quam útique hæsitatiónem humána infirmitáte mutántem, nequáquam permisísset Spíritus veritátis prædicatórum suórum inésse pectóribus, nisi illa trépida sollicitúdo et curiósa cunctátio nostræ fídei fundaménta iecísset. Nostris ígitur perturbatiónibus, nostrísque perículis in apóstolis consulebátur: nos in illis viris contra calúmnias impiórum, et contra terrénæ arguménta sapiéntiæ docebámur.

  r. Ascéndit Deus in iubilatióne, allelúia, * Et Dóminus in voce tubæ, allelúia, allelúia. v. Ascéndens Christus in altum, captívam duxit captivitátem. * Et Dóminus.

  Lectio IV
  In his diébus, duóbus discípulis tértius in via Dóminus comes iúngitur, et ad omnem nostræ ambiguitátis calíginem detergéndam, pavéntium ac trepidántium tárditas increpátur. Flammam fídei illumináta corda concípiunt; et quæ erant tépida, reseránte Scriptúras Dómino, efficiúntur ardéntia. In fractióne quoque panis convescéntium aperiúntur obtútus; multo felícius horum óculis patefáctis, quibus natúræ suæ manifestáta est glorificátio, quam illórum géneris nostri príncipum, quibus prævaricatiónis suæ est ingésta confúsio.

  IN III NOCTURNO
  Ant. 13.
  Ant. 13. I will behold thou anon, and thy hearts will rejoice, hallelujah, and no one will take away thy joy, hallelujah.
  Canticum Is 63, 1-5
Cantique Is 63, 1-5
  What is He who comes from Edom, from Bosra, in His dyed garments?
  Iste formósus in stola sua, * grádiens in multitúdine fortitúdinis suæ.
  He is beautiful in His robe, and He steps forward with almighty strength.
  "I am He who professes justice, and I come to defend and to save."
  Quare ergo rubrum est induméntum tuum * et vestiménta tua sicut calcántis in torculári?
  Wherefore then is Thy robe red, and wherefore are Thy garments like the clothes of those who tread in the vat?
  «Tórcular calcávi solus * et de géntibus non erat vir mecum;
  "I was alone treading at the winepress, and no man of the peoples was with Me;
  calcávi eos in furóre meo, * et conculcávi eos in ira mea.
  I trampled them in My fury, and I crushed them in My wrath.
  And their blood splashed on My robe, and I stained all My garments.
  Dies enim ultiónis in corde meo, * annus redemptiónis meæ venit.
  For the day of vengeance was in My heart, the year of My redemption has come.
  Circumspéxi, et non erat auxiliátor; * mirátus sum, et non fuit qui adiuváret;
  I looked around Me, and there was no one to help Me; I searched, and I found no help;
  then My arm saved Me, and My very wrath came to My aid."
Amen.
  Canticum Os 6, 1-6
Song of Hosea 6:1-6
  Come, and let us return unto the Lord, for He hath taken us captive, and He shall deliver us; He hath wounded, and He shall heal us.
  Vivificábit nos post duos dies, in die tértia suscitábit nos, * et vivémus in conspéctu eius.
  He shall give us life after two days, and on the third day He shall raise us up, and we will live in His presence.
  Sciámus sequamúrque, * ut cognoscámus Dóminum.
  We will know, and we will follow the Lord, that we may know Him.
   His rising will be like the dawn, and He shall descend upon us like the rains of autumn and spring upon the earth.
  «Quid fáciam tibi, Ephraim? Quid fáciam tibi, Iuda? Cáritas vestra quasi nubes matutína * et quasi ros mane pertránsiens.
  What will I do unto thee, Ephraim? What will I do unto thee, Judah? Thy charity is like the morning cloud, and like the dew that dissipates in the morning.
  Propter hoc dolávi per prophétas, occídi eos in verbis oris mei, * sed ius meum quasi lux egrediétur;
  Wherefore I have struck them down by the prophets, I have slain them by the words of My mouth, and My judgments shall break forth like light.
  For I want charity and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
Amen.
  Canticum Soph 3, 8-18
Cantique Soph 3, 8-18
  "Wait for Me, says the Lord, on the future day when I will arise; for I have resolved to gather the nations and unite the kingdoms,
  ut effúndam super eas indignatiónem meam, * omnem iram furóris mei;
  and to pour out upon them My indignation, all the fury of My wrath;
  in igne enim zeli mei * devorábitur omnis terra.
  for the whole earth will be devoured by the fire of My zeal.
  Quia tunc reddam pópulis lábium purum, ut ínvocent omnes in nómine Dómini * et sérviant ei úmero uno.
  Then I will give the peoples pure lips, so that all may call on the name of the Lord, and serve Him with one accord.
  Ultra flúmina Æthiópiæ, inde súpplices mei, * fílii dispersórum meórum déferent munus mihi.
   From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia shall come My worshippers; the sons of those whom I had scattered shall bring Me gifts.
  In die illa non confúnderis super cunctis actiónibus tuis, * quibus prævaricáta es in me;
  In that day thou shalt no longer be confused for all the criminal deeds by which thou hast offended Me;
   for then I will take away from amongst thou those who by their sumptuous words aroused thy pride, and thou shalt no longer be proud on My holy mountain.
  Et derelínquam in médio tui * pópulum páuperem et egénum.»
  I will leave in thy midst a people poor and small; and they will hope in the name of the Lord."
  Et sperábunt in nómine Dómini * relíquiæ Israel.
   The remnants of Israel will hope in the Name of the Lord.
  They shall not commit iniquity nor speak lies; no deceitful tongue shall be found in their mouths;
  but they will feed and rest, and no one will frighten them.
  Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

  Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthæum. 28, 16-20
  In illo témpore: Undecim discípuli abiérunt in Galilæam, in montem ubi constitúerat illis Iesus. Et réliqua.

  Ex Sermónibus sancti Augustíni epíscopi (Sermo Mai 98, 1-2: PLS 2, 494-495)

  Lectio I

  r. Viri Galilæi, quid admirámini aspiciéntes in cælum? Allelúia; * Quemádmodum vidístis eum ascendéntem in cælum, ita véniet, allelúia, allelúia, allelúia. v. Cumque intueréntur in cælum eúntem illum, ecce duo viri astitérunt iuxta illos in véstibus albis, qui et dixérunt: * Quemádmodum.

  Lectio IV

  Te per orbem terrárum sancta confitétur Ecclésia, Patrem imménsæ maiestátis;
  venerandum tuum verum et unicum Filium;
  Fiat misericórdia tua, Dómine, super nos, quemádmodum sperávimus in te.
  In te, Dómine, sperávi: non confúndar in ætérnum.
  ¶ Hæc ultima pars hymni ad libitum omitti potest.
  Deinde abbas cantat evangelium de dominica currente, in cuius fine omnes respondent :
Then the abbot sang the Gospel [of Sunday] current, to which all respond at the end with:
  r. Amen
  r. Amen.

  Let us, Almighty God, rejoice with the saints and give thanks to Thee with piety, for the ascension of Christ Thy Son is [also] our triumph, and the hope for the Body to be called unto the place where the glory of the head comes.
