Ad invitatorium
Warning: the monastic cursus is still under construction. There may still be many errors.
Amen.
Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Enlighten my understanding, inflame my love, so that I may recite this office with respect, attention, and devotion, and merit to be heard in the presence of Thy divine majesty. Through Christ our Lord. r. Amen.

Psalmus 3
Psalm 3
Dominus protector meus
The Lord is my protector
Dormivit et somnum cepit et resurrexit, quoniam Dominus suscepit eum (S. Irenæus).
He lay down and fell asleep, and He rose again because the Lord sustained Him.
Dómine, quid multiplicáti sunt, qui tríbulant me? * Multi insúrgunt advérsum me,
O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.
multi dicunt ánimæ meæ: * «Non est salus ipsi in Deo».
Many say to my soul: * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”
But thou, O Lord, art my protector, * my glory, and the lifter up of my head.
I have cried to the Lord with my voice, * and he hath heard me from his holy mountain.
Ego obdormívi et soporátus sum,> * exsurréxi, quia Dóminus suscépit me.
I have slept and have taken my rest, * and I have risen up, because the Lord hath protected me.
Non timébo mília pópuli circumdántis me. * Exsúrge, Dómine, salvum me fac, Deus meus;
I will not fear thousands of the people that surround me. * Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God.
quóniam tu percussísti in maxíllam omnes adversántes mihi, * dentes peccatórum contrivísti.
For thou hast struck all them who are my adversaries without cause; * thou hast broken the teeth of sinners.
Salvation is of the Lord, * and thy blessing is upon thy people.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, and ever shall be. Amen.

IN I NOCTURNO
Ant. 1. Inclína Dómine, * aurem tuam mihi, et exáudi verba mea.
Ant. 1. Incline, Lord, Thy ear unto me, and hearken my requests.
Psalmus 85 (86)
Psalm 85 (86)
Pauperis in rebus adversis oratio
Prayer of the poor in the face of adversity
Benedictus Deus, qui consolatur nos in omni tribulatione nostra (2 Cor 1, 3. 4).
Blessed be God, who comforts us in all our tribulations (2 Cor 1:3, 4).
Inclína, Dómine, aurem tuam et exáudi me, * quóniam inops et pauper sum ego.
Incline thy ear, O Lord, and hearken unto me, for I am needy and poor.
Custódi ánimam meam, quóniam sanctus sum; * salvum fac servum tuum, Deus meus, sperántem in te.
Guard my soul, for I am pious; save Thy servant, O my God, he puts his trust in Thou.
Have mercy on me, Lord, forasmuch as to Thou I have cried all day.
Lætífica ánimam servi tui, * quóniam ad te, Dómine, ánimam meam levávi.
Rejoice the soul of Thy servant, for to Thou, Lord, I have lifted up my soul.
Quóniam tu, Dómine, suávis et mitis * et multæ misericórdiæ ómnibus invocántibus te.
For Thou art good, O Lord, and merciful, and full of compassion for all who call upon Thou.
Auribus pércipe, Dómine, oratiónem meam * et inténde voci deprecatiónis meæ.
Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer, and hearken unto the voice of my supplications.
In die tribulatiónis meæ clamávi ad te, * quia exáudies me.
I call upon Thou in the day of my trouble, and Thou shalt hearken unto me.
No one equals Thou amongst the gods, Lord, naught resembles Thy works.
Omnes gentes, quascúmque fecísti, vénient † et adorábunt coram te, Dómine, * et glorificábunt nomen tuum,
All the nations that Thou hast made will come and worship Thou, O Lord, and give glory to Thy name,
quóniam magnus es tu et fáciens mirabília: * tu es Deus solus.
for Thou art great and Thou work wonders: Thou alone are God.
Doce me, Dómine, viam tuam, * et ingrédiar in veritáte tua;
Teach me thy ways, Lord; I want to walk in Thy faithfulness;
simplex fac cor meum, * ut tímeat nomen tuum.
make my heart simple, that it may fear Thy name.
Confitébor tibi, Dómine Deus meus, in toto corde meo * et glorificábo nomen tuum in ætérnum,
I will praise Thee with all my heart, O Lord my God, and glorify Thy name for eternity.
For Thy mercy is great unto me, Thou hast rescued my soul from the depths of hell.
O God, the proud have rebelled against me, and the assembly of the mighty has sought my soul, and they have not placed Thee before their gaze.
Et tu, Dómine, Deus miserátor et miséricors * pátiens et multæ misericórdiæ et veritátis,
But Thou, Lord, are a merciful and compassionate God, patient, of great mercy and truth.
réspice in me et miserére mei; † da fortitúdinem tuam púero tuo * et salvum fac fílium ancíllæ tuæ.
Turn thy eyes towards me and have mercy on me; give thy strength to thy servant, and save the son of thy handmaid.
Fac mecum signum in bonum, † ut vídeant, qui odérunt me, et confundántur, * quóniam tu, Dómine, adiuvísti me et consolátus es me..
Mark Thy kindness unto me, that my enemies may behold it and be confounded, for it is Thou, the Lord, who assist and comfort me.
Amen.

Ierusalem omnium gentium mater
Jerusalem, mother of all nations
Illa quæ sursum est Ierusalem, libera est, quæ est mater nostra (Gal 4, 26).
The Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother (Gal 4:26).
Fundaménta eius in móntibus sanctis; † díligit Dóminus portas Sion * super ómnia tabernácula Iacob.
He founded it on the holy mountains; The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all of Jacob's dwellings.
Gloriósa dicta sunt de te, * cívitas Dei!
Glorious things have been said about thou, city of God!
I will name Rahab and Babylon amongst those who know me; here are the Philistines, and Tyre, with Ethiopia: there they were born.
And it will be said of Zion: "This and that one was born there; it is he, the Most High, who founded it."
Dóminus réferet in librum populórum: * «Hi nati sunt illic».
The Lord will inscribe in the role of the peoples: "This one was born there."
Et cantant sicut choros ducéntes: * «Omnes fontes mei in te».
And singers and musicians say: "All my sources are in thee".
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Psalmus 88 (89)
Psalm 88 (89)
Misericordiæ Domini super domum David
The Lord's mercies upon the house of David.
Deus ex semine David secundum promissionem eduxit Salvatorem Iesum (Act 13, 22. 23).
God, according to His promise, brought forth a Savior, Jesus, from the race of David.
I
I
Misericórdias Dómini in ætérnum cantábo, * in generatiónem et generatiónem annuntiábo veritátem tuam in ore meo.
I will sing the mercies of the Lord for ever; from generation to generation my mouth will declare Thy truth.
Quóniam dixísti: «In ætérnum misericórdia ædificábitur», * in cælis firmábitur véritas tua.
For Thou hast said, "Mercy will be raised up like an everlasting building in heaven; Thy truth will be firmly established there.
«Dispósui testaméntum elécto meo, * iurávi David servo meo:
I have entered into a covenant with My chosen ones; I swore this oath to David My servant:
Usque in ætérnum confirmábo semen tuum * et ædificábo in generatiónem et generatiónem sedem tuam».
I will preserve thy seed forevermore, and I will establish thy throne for all generations.
Confitebúntur cæli mirabília tua, Dómine, * étenim veritátem tuam in ecclésia sanctórum.
Heaven will declare Thy wonders, Lord, and Thy truth in the assembly of the saints.
Quóniam quis in núbibus æquábitur Dómino, * símilis erit Dómino in fíliis Dei?
For who in heaven will be equal unto the Lord? and who will be like God amongst the sons of God?
God, who is glorified in the assembly of the saints, is greater and more formidable than all those around Him.
Dómine Deus virtútum, quis símilis tibi? * Potens es, Dómine, et véritas tua in circúitu tuo.
Lord, God of hosts, who is like Thou? Thou art mighty, Lord, and Thy truth surrounds Thou.
Tu domináris supérbiæ maris, * elatiónes flúctuum eius tu mítigas.
Thou dominate the mightiness of the sea, and thou calm the movement of its waves.
Tu conculcásti sicut vulnerátum Rahab, * in bráchio virtútis tuæ dispersísti inimícos tuos.
Thou hast humbled the proud as a wounded man; Thou hast, by the strength of Thy arm, scattered Thy enemies.
Thine are the heavens, and thine the earth; it is Thou who founded the universe and all that it contains;
Aquilónem et austrum tu creásti, * Thabor et Hermon in nómine tuo exsultábunt.
Thou created the aquilon and the sea. Tabor and Hermon rejoice at Thy Name;
Thy arm is armed with power. Let Thy hand be firm, and let Thy right hand be lifted up.
Iustítia et iudícium firmaméntum sedis tuæ. * Misericórdia et véritas præcédent fáciem tuam.
Justice and equity are the support of Thy throne. Mercy and truth will walk before Thy face.
Beátus pópulus, qui scit iubilatiónem. * Dómine, in lúmine vultus tui ambulábunt
Happy are the people who know joyful acclamations. Lord, they will walk in the light of Thy countenance;
et in nómine tuo exsultábunt tota die * et in iustítia tua exaltabúntur,
and they will rejoice all day long in Thy Name, and they will be exalted by Thy righteousness.
quóniam decor virtútis eórum tu es, * et in beneplácito tuo exaltábitur cornu nostrum.
For Thou art the glory of their strength, and it is on Thy goodness that our power will rise.
For it is the Lord who sustains us; it is the Holy One of Israel, our King.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Tunc locútus es in visióne sanctis tuis et dixísti: «Pósui adiutórium in poténte * et exaltávi eléctum de plebe.
Then Thou spakest in a vision to Thy saints, and Thou saidst, I have helped a mighty man, and I have raised up the one I have chosen from amongst My people.
Invéni David servum meum; * óleo sancto meo unxi eum.
I have found David My servant; I anointed him with My holy oil.
For My hand will assist him, and My arm will strengthen him.
The enemy will never have the advantage over him, and the son of iniquity will not be able to harm him.
And I will cut his enemies in pieces before him, and I will put to flight those who hate him.
My truth and My mercy will be with him, and through My Name his power will rise.
And I will stretch out his hand over the sea, and his right hand over the rivers.
Ipse invocábit me: “Pater meus es tu, * Deus meus et refúgium salútis meæ”.
He shall call upon Me: Thou art my Father, my God, and the author of my salvation.
Et ego primogénitum ponam illum, * excélsum præ régibus terræ.
And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
In ætérnum servábo illi misericórdiam meam * et testaméntum meum fidéle ipsi.
I will preserve My mercy for him forevermore, and My covenant with him will be inviolable.
And I will make his seed endure for all ages, and his throne as well as the heavens.
That if his children forsake My law, and do not walk in My precepts;
if they break My ordinances, and do not keep My commandments:
visitábo in virga delíctum eórum * et in verbéribus iniquitátem eórum.
I will visit their iniquities with the rod, and their sins with blows;
but I will not withdraw My mercy from him, nor will I betray My truth.
And I will not break My covenant, nor will I make the words that come from My lips vain.
Semel iurávi in sancto meo: * David non méntiar.
I once swore by My holiness, and I will not lie to David:
Semen eius in ætérnum manébit, * et thronus eius sicut sol in conspéctu meo
His seed will abide forevermore, and his throne will be like the sun in My presence,
et sicut luna firmus stabit in ætérnum * et testis in cælo fidélis».
and as the moon that will endure forevermore, and the Witness who is in heaven is faithful.
Tu vero reppulísti et reiecísti, * irátus es contra christum tuum;
And yet Thou rejected and despised; Thou hast rejected Thy anointed one.
evertísti testaméntum servi tui, * profanásti in terram diadéma eius.
Thou hast destroyed the covenant made with Thy servant; Thou hast desecrated his sacred diadem by throwing him unto the ground.
Destruxísti omnes muros eius, * posuísti munitiónes eius in ruínas.
Thou hast pulled down all its fences; Thou hast filled his fortresses with fear.
Diripuérunt eum omnes transeúntes viam, * factus est oppróbrium vicínis suis.
All who passed by the road plundered him, and he became the reproach of his neighbors.
Exaltásti déxteram depriméntium eum, * lætificásti omnes inimícos eius.
Thou hast lifted up the right hand of his oppressors; Thou hast rejoiced all his enemies.
Thou hast taken all strength from his sword, and thou hast not helped him in war.
Thou hast stripped it of its splendor, and thou hast broken its throne against the earth.
Minorásti dies iuventútis eius, * perfudísti eum confusióne.
Thou hast shortened the days of his reign; Thou hast covered him with ignominy.
Usquequo, Dómine, abscondéris in finem, * exardéscet sicut ignis ira tua?
How long, Lord, will Thou turn away forevermore? How long will Thy wrath burn like fire?
Memoráre, quam brevis mea substántia. * Ad quam vanitátem creásti omnes fílios hóminum?
Keep in remembrance what my life is; for is it for nothingness that Thou hast created all the children of men?
What man can live without seeing death, and who will tear his soul from the power of hell?
Ubi sunt misericórdiæ tuæ antíquæ, Dómine, * sicut iurásti David in veritáte tua?
Where, Lord, are Thy ancient mercies, which Thou swore to David in the name of Thy truth?
Memor esto, Dómine, oppróbrii servórum tuórum, * quod contínui in sinu meo, multárum géntium,
Keep in remembrance, O Lord, the reproach of Thy servants; I have kept him hidden in my bosom; he came from many nations.
quo exprobravérunt inimíci tui, Dómine, * quo exprobravérunt vestígia christi tui.
Keep in remembrance the reproach of Thy enemies, Lord, the reproach they made about Thy change toward Thy anointed.
Benedíctus Dóminus in ætérnum. * Fiat, fiat.
Blessed be the Lord forevermore. So be it, so be it.
Amen.

Magnificentia Domini creatoris
Magnificence of the Lord Creator
Regnavit Dominus, Deus noster omnipotens.
He reigns, the Lord our God, the Almighty. Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory (Rev 19:6, 7).
The Lord hath reigned, he is clothed with beauty: the Lord is clothed with strength,
Etenim firmávit orbem terræ, * qui non commovébitur.
and hath girded himself. For he hath established the world which shall not be moved.
Firmáta sedes tua ex tunc, * a sǽculo tu es.
Thy throne is prepared from of old: thou art from everlasting.
Elevavérunt flúmina, Dómine, † elevavérunt flúmina vocem suam, * elevavérunt flúmina fragórem suum.
The floods have lifted up, O Lord: the floods have lifted up their voice. The floods have lifted up their waves,
Super voces aquárum multárum, † super poténtes elatiónes maris, * potens in altis Dóminus.
with the noise of many waters. Wonderful are the surges of the sea: wonderful is the Lord on high.
Testimónia tua credibília facta sunt nimis; * domum tuam decet sanctitúdo, Dómine, in longitúdinem diérum.
Thy testimonies are become exceedingly credible: holiness becometh thy house, O Lord, unto length of days.

Psalm 93 (94)
Dominus iustorum ultor
The Lord avenges the righteous
For God has not called us to impurity, but to sanctification. (Cf. 1 Thess 4:6-7).
Deus ultiónum, Dómine, *Deus ultiónum, effúlge.
God of vengeance, the Lord, God of vengeance, appear.
Exaltáre, qui iúdicas terram, *redde retributiónem supérbis.
Arise, O judge of the earth, render unto the proud according to their works.
Usquequo peccatóres, Dómine, *úsquequo peccatóres exsultábunt?
How long will the wicked, the Lord, how long will the sinners triumph?
They pour out arrogant speeches, they glorify themselves, all these artisans of iniquity.
Pópulum tuum, Dómine, humíliant *et hereditátem tuam vexant.
Lord, they crush Thy people, they oppress Thy inheritance.
Víduam et ádvenam interfíciunt *et pupíllos occídunt.
They slaughter the widow and the stranger, they massacre the orphans.
Et dixérunt: «Non vidébit Dóminus, *nec intélleget Deus Iacob» .
And they say, "The Lord does not behold, the God of Jacob does not take heed."
Intellégite, insipiéntes in pópulo, *et, stulti, quando sapiétis?
Understand, then, stupid children of the people, fools, when will thou hast intelligence?
Would not he who planted the ear hearken, and the one who formed behold?
Would not he who chastises the nations punish, he who teaches knowledge to men?
Dóminus scit cogitatiónes hóminum *quóniam vanæ sunt.
The Lord knows the thoughts of men; He knoweth that they are vain.
Blessed is the man whom Thou instruct, O Lord, and to whom Thou teachest Thy law,
ut mítiges ei a diébus malis, *donec fodiátur peccatóri fóvea.
to appease him in the days of trouble, until such time as the pit is dug for the fisherman.
For the Lord will not reject His people, nor will He forsake His inheritance.
but the judgment will anon be in conformity with justice, and all men of right hearts will applaud it.
Quis consúrget mihi advérsus malignántes, *aut quis stabit mecum advérsus operántes iniquitátem?
Who will rise up for me against the wicked, and who will sustain me against those who do iniquity?
Nisi quia Dóminus adiúvit me, *paulo minus habitásset in loco siléntii ánima mea.
If the Lord were not my help, my soul would soon dwell in the abode of silence.
Si dicébam: «Motus est pes meus» , *misericórdia tua, Dómine, sustentábat me.
When I say, "My foot is tottering," Thy goodness, the Lord, sustains me.
In multitúdine sollicitúdinum meárum in corde meo, *consolatiónes tuæ lætificavérunt ánimam meam.
When anxieties stir in crowds in my thoughts, Thy consolations rejoice my soul.
Numquid sociábitur tibi sedes iniquitátis, *quæ fingit moléstiam contra præcéptum?
Has the tribunal of perdition, which does evil in legal forms, aught in common with Thou?
Irruunt in ánimam iusti *et sánguinem innocéntem condémnant.
They hasten against the life of the just, and they condemn innocent blood.
Et factus est mihi Dóminus in præsídium *et Deus meus in rupem refúgii mei;
But the Lord is my fortress, my God is the rock where I shelter;
et reddet illis iniquitátem ipsórum, † et in malítia eórum dispérdet eos, *dispérdet illos Dóminus Deus noster.
and He shall bring down their iniquity upon them, He shall destroy them by their own malice, He shall destroy them, the Lord our God.

Lectio I
Scio hóminem in Christo ante annos quattuórdecim - sive in córpore néscio, sive extra corpus néscio, Deus scit - raptum eiúsmodi usque ad tértium cælum.
Lectio II
Nam et si volúero gloriári, non ero insípiens, veritátem enim dicam; parco autem, ne quis in me exístimet supra id, quod videt me aut audit ex me, et ex magnitúdine revelatiónum. Propter quod ter Dóminum rogávi, ut discéderet a me; et dixit mihi: " Súfficit tibi grátia mea, nam virtus in infirmitáte perfícitur. " Libentíssime ígitur pótius gloriábor in infirmitátibus meis, ut inhábitet in me virtus Christi.
r. Misericórdia tua, Dómine, magna est super me, * Et liberásti ánimam meam ex inférno inferióri. v. Deus, iníqui insurrexérunt in me, et fortes quæsiérunt ánimam meam. * Et liberásti.
Lectio III
Factus sum insípiens. Vos me cœgístis; ego enim débui a vobis commendári.

wherefore the world will be stable and will not totter; He shall judge the people fairly.
May the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad! Let the sea be agitated with all that it contains! Let the countryside be cheerful with all that it contains,
Tunc exsultábunt ómnia ligna silvárum † a fácie Dómini, quia venit, * quóniam venit iudicáre terram.
let all the trees of the forest shout for joy before the Lord, for He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth.
Iudicábit orbem terræ in iustítia * et pópulos in veritáte sua.
He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people according to His truth
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

For Thou, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth, and are supremely exalted above all the gods.

You are seated above the Cherubim, You who renewed the state of the earth plunged in evil, by taking on our likeness (S. Athanasius).
Dóminus regnávit! Commoveántur pópuli; * sedet super chérubim, moveátur terra.
The Lord reigns! The people tremble; He is seated on the Cherubim; the earth is tottering.
Dóminus in Sion magnus * et excélsus super omnes pópulos.

Let us praise the power of the King who loves righteousness, Thou establish righteousness, Thou exercise righteousness and equity in Jacob.
Exalt the Lord our God, and bow down before the stool of His feet, for He is holy!

Iusti principis confessio
The program of a just prince
Si diligitis me, mandata mea servabitis (Io 14, 15).
If you love Me, keep My commandments (Io 14, 15).
Misericórdiam et iudícium cantábo; *tibi, Dómine, psallam.
I want to sing of goodness and justice; it is Thou, the Lord, whom I want to celebrate.
Intéllegam in via immaculáta; *quando vénies ad me?
I will beware of the path of innocence. When will Thou come unto me?
Perambulábo in innocéntia cordis mei, *in médio domus meæ.
I will walk in the integrity of my heart, in the midst of my house.
Non propónam ante óculos meos rem iniústam, † faciéntem prævaricatiónes ódio habébo, *non adhærébit mihi.
I will not set before my eyes any evil deed, I hate perverse conduct, it will not cling unto me.
Cor pravum recédet a me, *malígnum non cognóscam.
A false heart will never be mine, I don't want to know evil.
Detrahéntem secréto próximo suo, *hunc cessáre fáciam;
The detractor who secretly tears his neighbor apart, I will exterminate;
the man with the haughty behold and the heart swollen with pride, I will not support him.
I will have my eyes on the faithful men of the land, that they may dwell with me; whoever walks in an upright way will be my servant.
He who acts with deceit will have no place in my house; he who utters a lie will not stand before my eyes.
In matutíno cessáre fáciam omnes peccatóres terræ, *ut dispérdam de civitáte Dómini omnes operántes iniquitátem.
Every morning I will destroy all the wicked in the land, that I may cut off from the city of the Lord all those who work iniquity.

In secundo nocturno, anno II
Ex Epístulis sancti Athanásii epíscopi (Ep. 1 ad Serapionem, 28.30: PG 26, 594-599)
Lectio I
r. Factus est mihi Dóminus in refúgium, * Et Deus meus in auxílium spei meæ. v. Deus ultiónum Dóminus, Deus ultiónum líbere egit. * Et.
Lectio III
Perambulábam in innocéntia cordis mei, in médio domus meæ, * In via. v. Glória Patri. * In via.
