Miserátor et miséricors Dóminus, * longánimis et multæ misericórdiæ.
The Lord is compassionate and merciful, patient (slow to punish) and very (good) merciful.
Non in perpétuum conténdet * neque in ætérnum irascétur.
He shall not be perpetually angry, and will not threaten endlessly.
Non secúndum peccáta nostra fecit nobis * neque secúndum iniquitátes nostras retríbuit nobis.
He hath not dealt with us according to our sins, nor has He punished us according to our iniquities.
Quóniam, quantum exaltátur cælum a terra, * præváluit misericórdia eíus super timéntes eum;
For as much as heaven is exalted above the earth, so He hath established (corroborated) His mercy upon those who fear Him.
quantum distat ortus ab occidénte, * longe fecit a nobis iniquitátes nostras.
As far as the east is removed from the west, so much has He removed our iniquities from us.
Quómodo miserétur pater filiórum, * misértus est Dóminus timéntibus se.
As a father has compassion on His children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.
Quóniam ipse cognóvit figméntum nostrum, * recordátus est quóniam pulvis sumus.
For He knoweth (Himself) what we are made of; He remembered that we are naught but dust.
Homo: sicut fenum dies eíus, * tamquam flos agri sic efflorébit.
The days of man pass like grass; it will bloom like the flower of the field.
Spirat ventus in illum, et non subsístet, * et non cognóscet eum ámplius locus eíus.
Let a breath pass over him/her, and he/she is (she) no more, and the place he/she used to occupy no longer recognizes him.

But the Lord's mercy extends from eternity to eternity upon those who fear Him. And His righteousness is poured out upon the children of the children (sons of the sons)

of those who keep His covenant, and keep in remembrance His precepts (commandments), to fulfill them.

Praise the Lord, forasmuch as He is good and His mercy is eternal.
Quis loquétur poténtias Dómini, * audítas fáciet omnes laudes eíus?
Who will tell of the Lord's works of power? Who will give all His praises to be heard?
Beáti, qui custódiunt iudícium * et fáciunt iustítiam in omni témpore.
Happy are those who keep equity, and practice justice at all times.
Meménto nostri, Dómine, in beneplácito pópuli tui, * vísita nos in salutári tuo,
Keep in remembrance us, Lord, in Thy benevolence towards Thy people; visit us by Thy salvation:

But God saved them for His Name's sake, that He might make His power known.

And He saved them from the hands of those who hated them, and He delivered them from the hands of the enemy.

And the water swallowed up their oppressors, not a single one remained.

Then they believed His words, and they sounded His praise.

He granted their request, and sent something to satisfy themselves.

They murmured in their tents, and did not hearken unto the voice of the Lord.
Et elevávit manum suam super eos, * ut prostérneret eos in desérto
And He lifted up His hand against them, to destroy them in the wilderness,
et ut deíceret semen eórum in natiónibus * et dispérgeret eos in regiónibus.
to cast their race amongst the nations, and to scatter them in various countries.
Et adhæsérunt Baálphegor * et comedérunt sacrifícia mortuórum;
They consecrated themselves to Beelphegor, and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods.
et irritavérunt eum in adinventiónibus suis, * et irrúpit in eos ruína.
And they angered the Lord with their sinful works, and ruin was heaped up amongst them.
Et stetit Phínees et fecit iudícium, * et cessávit quassátio,
Phinehas arose and appeased the Lord, and the plague ceased.
et reputátum est ei in iustítiam * in generatiónem et generatiónem usque in sempitérnum.
And this zeal has been imputed unto him in justice, from generation to generation forevermore.

They angered the Lord at the Waters of Contradiction, and Moses was grieved forasmuch as of them,
quia exacerbavérunt spíritum eíus, * et témere locútus est in lábiis suis.
for they embittered his spirit, and he showed distrust in his words.
Non disperdidérunt gentes, * quas dixit Dóminus illis.
They did not destroy the peoples whom the Lord had marked out for them;
Et commíxti sunt inter gentes et didicérunt ópera eórum.
but they mingled with the nations, and learned of their works.
Et serviérunt sculptílibus eórum, * et factum est illis in scándalum.
And they worshipped their carved idols, which became an occasion for them to fall.

They sacrificed their sons and daughters unto the demons.
Et effudérunt sánguinem innocéntem, † sánguinem filiórum suórum et filiárum suárum, * quas sacrificavérunt sculptílibus Chánaan.
They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, which they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan.

And the earth was infected with murders, and it was defiled by their works, and they prostituted themselves to their passions.
Et exársit ira Dóminus in pópulum suum * et abominátus est hereditátem suam
And the Lord became violently angry with His people, and He had His inheritance as an abomination.
et trádidit eos in manus géntium, * et domináti sunt eórum, qui odérunt eos.
And He delivered them into the hands of the nations, and those who hated them subdued them.

Their enemies tormented them, and they were humiliated under their hands.

God oftentimes delivered them; but they angered Him by the impiety of their designs, and they were humbled by their very iniquities.

And He saw them in their distress, and He listened to their prayer.
Et memor fuit testaménti sui * et pænítuit eum secúndum multitúdinem misericórdiæ suæ.
He remembered His covenant, and repented according unto the greatness of His mercy,
Et dedit eos in miseratiónes * in conspéctu ómnium, qui captívos dúxerant eos.
and He made them the object of His mercies, in the sight of all those who had enslaved them.

Save us, Lord our God, and gather us from amongst the nations, that we may praise Thy holy name, and set our glory in praising Thou.

for He hath broken down the gates of brass, and broken the bolts of iron.

He hath taken them out of the way of their iniquity; for they had been humbled forasmuch as of their injustices.

Their souls abhorred all food, and they were near the gates of death.

Dixit et excitávit spíritum procéllæ, * et exaltáti sunt fluctus eíus.
He said, and the breath of the storm arose, and the waves of the sea were stirred up.

They ascend to heaven, and descend unto the abyss; their souls fainted in the midst of their evils.

He changed the storm into a light wind, and the waves of the sea subsided.

They rejoiced to behold them appeased, and God led them unto the port where they wanted to arrive.

Let them praise the Lord for His mercies, and for His wonders on behalf of the children of men.
et exáltent eum in ecclésia plebis * et in convéntu seniórum laudent eum.
Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people, and let them praise Him in the council of the elders.
Pósuit flúmina in desértum * et éxitus aquárum in sitim,
He hath turned the rivers into a desert, and the springs of water into parched soil,

and the fertile land in salt plains, forasmuch as of the malice of its inhabitants.

Then they were reduced to a few, and overwhelmed by the affliction of their evils and pain.
Effúdit contemptiónem super príncipes * et erráre fecit eos in desérto ínvio.
Contempt was poured out upon the princes, and He caused them to wander out of the way and into places without way.
Et suscépit páuperem de inópia * et pósuit sicut oves famílias.
And He helped the poor in their poverty and multiplied families like flocks.
Vidébunt recti et lætabúntur, * et omnis iníquitas oppilábit os suum.
The righteous will behold it and rejoice, and iniquity will have to shut its mouths.

Against perfidious enemies
Ego autem dico vobis: Diligite inimicos vestros... et orate pro persequentibus vos (Mt 5,44).
And I say to you: Love your enemies... And pray for those who persecute you.
Deus laudis meæ, ne tacúeris, *quia os peccatóris et os dolósi super me apértum est.
O God, do not be silent about my praise, for the mouth of the sinner and the mouth of the deceitful man are open against me.
Locúti sunt advérsum me lingua dolósa † et sermónibus ódii circumdedérunt me * et expugnavérunt me gratis.
They spoke against me with a treacherous tongue, they besieged me with their hateful speeches, and they waged war against me without cause.
Pro dilectióne mea adversabántur mihi; * ego autem orábam.
Instead of loving me, they slandered me; but I remained in prayer.
