To Thy servants, Lord, we pray Thou, grant the gift of heavenly grace, so that those for whom the birth of the Blessed Virgin was the dawn of salvation may find in the celebration of her Birth an increase of peace.
   Lectio I

This is what the Lord says: “And Thou Bethlehem, Ephrata, art a little one in the thousands of Juda: out of thee shall come forth unto me he that shall be the dominatour in Israel: & his coming forth from the beginning, from the days of eternity. Therefore shall he give them even till the time, wherein she that travaileth shall bring forth: & the remnant of his brethren shall be converted to the children of Israel. And he shall stand, & feed in the strength of our Lord, in the height of the name of our Lord his God: & they shall be converted, because now shall he be magnified even to the ends of the earth. He is the one who will bring peace.
   Verbum Dómini. r. Deo grátias.
Word of the Lord. r. Let us give thanks to God.

When his mother Mary was spoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child, by the Holy Ghost. Whereupon Joseph her husband for that he was a just man, & would not put her to open shame: was minded secretly to dismiss her. But as he was thus thinking, behold the Angel of our Lord appeared to him in sleep saying: Joseph son of David, fear not to take Mary thy wife, for that which is born in her, is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a Son: and thou shalt call his name Jesus. For he shall save his people from their sins. And all this was done that it might be fulfilled which our Lord spake by the Prophet saying. Behold a Virgin shall be with child, & bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

PRÆFATIO II DE BEATA MARIA VIRGINE
Second Preface of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Ecclesia, verbis Mariæ, laudes Deo persolvit
The Church, through the words of Mary, offers praise to God
Vere dignum et iustum est, æquum et salutáre, in ómnium Sanctórum provéctu te mirábilem confitéri, et potíssimum, beátæ Vírginis Maríæ memóriam recoléntes, cleméntiam tuam ipsíus grato magnificáre præcónio.
It is verily fitting and just, right and salutary to give thee thanks, Lord, and to proclaim Thy wonders through the perfection of Thy saints; and, especially as we commemorate the Blessed Virgin Mary, to exalt Thy mercy above all else by drawing inspiration from her song of praise.
Vere namque in omnes terræ fines magna fecísti, ac tuam in sǽcula prorogásti misericórdiæ largitátem, cum, ancíllæ tuæ humilitátem aspíciens, per eam dedísti humánæ salútis auctórem, Fílium tuum, Iesum Christum, Dóminum nostrum.
Verily, Thou hast done great works in the far corners of the earth, and Thou hast shown Thy mercy throughout the ages, when, looking upon the humility of Thy handmaid, Thou gave us through her the Author of human salvation, Jesus Christ, Thy Son and our Lord.
Per quem maiestátem tuam adórat exércitus Angelórum, ante conspéctum tuum in æternitáte lætántium.
Through whom the choirs of angels eternally praise Thy glory, rejoicing in Thy presence.
Cum quibus et nostras voces ut admítti iúbeas, deprecámur, sócia exsultatióne dicéntes:
Let us join our voices with theirs in singing Thy praises, saying:
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dóminus Deus Sábaoth...
