Absit, Dómine, absit a corde servi tui, qui confitétur tibi, absit, ut quocúmque gáudio gáudeam, beátum me putem. Est enim gáudium, quod non datur ímpiis, sed eis qui te gratis colunt, quorum gáudium tu ipse es. Et ipsa est beáta vita, gaudére ad te, de te, propter te; ipsa est et non est áltera. Qui autem áliam putant esse, áliud sectántur gáudium neque ipsum verum. Ab áliqua tamen imágine gáudii volúntas eórum non avértitur.
Non ergo certum est quod omnes esse beáti volunt, quóniam qui non de te gaudére volunt, quæ sola vita beáta est, non útique vitam beátam volunt. An omnes hoc volunt, sed quóniam caro concupíscit advérsus spíritum et spíritus advérsus carnem, ut non fáciant quod volunt, cadunt in id quod valent eóque conténti sunt, quia illud quod non valent, non tantum volunt quantum sat est, ut váleant?
Nam quæro ab ómnibus, utrum malint de veritáte quam de falsitáte gaudére; tam non dúbitant dícere de veritáte se malle, quam non dúbitant dícere beátos esse se velle. Beáta quippe vita est gáudium de veritáte. Hoc est enim gáudium de te, qui véritas es, Deus, illuminátio mea, salus faciéi meæ, Deus meus.
