In those days: Paul and Barnabas said to the Jews: To you it behoved us first to speak the word of God: but because you repel it, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life; behold we turn to the Gentiles. For so our Lord commanded us: I have put thee to be the light of the Gentiles; that thou mayest be salvation unto the utmost of the earth. And the Gentiles hearing it, were glad, and glorified the word of our Lord: and there believed as many as were preordinate to life everlasting. And the word of our Lord was spread throughout the whole country.

Lectio I
In those days: it pleased the Apostles and Ancients with the whole Church, to choose men out of them, & to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, Judas, who was surnamed Barsabas, & Silas, chief men among the Brethren, writing by their hands. The Apostles and Ancients, the brethren, to the brethren of the Gentiles that are at Antioch and in Syria and Cilicia, greeting. Because we have heard that certain going forth from us have troubled you with words subverting your souls, to whom we gave no commandment: It hath pleased us being gathered in one, to choose out men & to send them unto you with our dearest Barnabas and Paul, men that have given their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have sent therefore Judas and Silas who themselves also will in words report unto you the same things. For it hath seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us, to lay no further burden upon you than these necessary things: That you abstain from the things immolated to idols, and blood, and that which is strangled, and fornication, from the which things keeping yourselves, you shall do well. Fare ye well. They therefore being dismissed went down to Antioch: and gathering the multitude, delivered the epistle. Which when they had read, they rejoiced upon the consolation.

At that time: Jesus went about all the cities, and towns, teaching in their Synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, and curing every disease, and every infirmity. And seeing the multitudes, he pitied them; because they were vexed, and lay like sheep that have not a shepherd. Then he saith to his Disciples: The harvest surely is great, but the workmen are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth workmen into his harvest.

At that time: Jesus saith to His disciples: This is my precept, that you love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love than this no man hath, that a man yield his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do the things that I command you. Now I call you not servants: for the servant knoweth not what his Lord doeth. But you I have called friends; because all things whatsoever I heard of my Father, I have notified unto you. You chose not me, but I chose you; and have appointed you: that you go, & bring fruit; and your fruit abide: that whatsoever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it you. PRÆFATIO DE SANCTIS PASTORIBUS
PREFACE OF THE HOLY PASTORS
De præsentia sanctorum Pastorum in Ecclesia
On the Presence of Holy Shepherds in the Church
Verily, it is right and just, fair and salutary for us, evermore and everywhere, to give thee thanks: Lord, Holy Father, eternal and almighty God, through Christ our Lord.
Quia sic tríbuis Ecclésiam tuam sancti N. festivitáte gaudére, ut eam exémplo piæ conversatiónis corróbores, verbo prædicatiónis erúdias, gratáque tibi supplicatióne tueáris.
Forasmuch as Thou grant us the joy of celebrating the feast of Saint N. today, strengthening Thy Church through the example of his holy life, instructing it through his words, and protecting it through his intercession.
That is wherefore, together with the angels and the host of saints, we sing a hymn of praise unto thee, saying without end:
