Blessing and imposition of ashes
Post homiliam, sacerdos stans, manibus iunctis, dicit:
After the homily, the priest stands, hands clasped, and says:
Deum Patrem, fratres caríssimi, supplíciter deprecémur, ut hos cíneres, quos pæniténtiæ causa capítibus nostris impónimus, ubertáte grátiæ suæ benedícere dignétur.
Let us humbly beg God the Father, dear brethren, that He may deign to bless with the abundance of His grace these ashes which we place on our heads [as a sign of] penance.
Et, post brevem orationem in silentio, manibus extensis, prosequitur:
And, after a brief silent prayer, hands extended, he continues:
Deus, qui humiliatióne flécteris et satisfactióne placáris, aurem tuæ pietátis précibus nostris inclína, et super fámulos tuos, horum cínerum aspersióne contáctos, grátiam tuæ benedictiónis effúnde propítius, ut, quadragesimálem observántiam prosequéntes, ad Fílii tui paschále mystérium celebrándum purificátis méntibus perveníre mereántur. Per Christum Dóminum nostrum. r. Amen.
O God, who allows Yourself to be bent by humiliation and appeased by reparation, incline Thy ear favorably to our prayers, and pour out the grace of Thy blessing on Thy servants whose heads will have been touched by the sprinkling of these ashes, so that after having followed the observances of Lent, they may come with purified minds unto the celebration of the paschal mystery of Thy Son. Through Christ, our Lord. r. Amen
Vel:
Or :
Amen.
O God, who desires not the death of sinners but their conversion, in Thy mercy hearken our petitions, and deign to bless these ashes which we have resolved to place on our heads as a sign of Thy goodness, so that, recognizing that we are dust and will return to dust, we may, once we have completed the exercises of Lent, having forsaken sin and embraced new life, in the image of Thy risen Son. He who lives and reigns for ever and ever. r. Amen.
Then he sprinkles the ashes with holy water, without saying a word. Then the priest imposes the ashes on all those present, who come before him, saying to each:
Pænitémini, et crédite Evangélio.
Do penance and believe in the Gospel.
Vel:
Or:
Meménto, homo, quia pulvis es, et in púlverem revertéris.
Keep in remembrance, man, that thou art dust and to dust thou shall return.
Interim cantatur:
During this time we will sing :
Antiphona 1
Let us change our garments, let us cover ourselves with ashes and cilice, let us fast and weep before the Lord; for our all-merciful God is ready to forgive us our sins.
Antiphona 2 (Cf.
Let the priests and ministers of the Lord weep betwixt the vestibule and the altar and say: Spare, O Lord, spare Thy people and do not shut the mouths of those who sing Thy praises, O Lord.
Antiphona 3 (Ps 50, 3)
Dele, Dómine, iniquitátem meam.
Blot out my iniquity, O Lord.
Quæ repeti potest post singulos versus psalmi 50 Miserére mei, Deus.
Which can be repeated after each verse of Psalm 50 Have mercy on me, O God.
