I prevented the dawning of the day, and cried: because in thy words I very much hoped.

Dominus iustorum ultor

The Lord avenges the righteous

Vindex est Dominus de his omnibus: ...non enim vocavit nos Deus in immunditia, sed in sanctificatione (Cf. 1 Th 4, 6-7).

For God has not called us to impurity, but to sanctification. (Cf. 1 Thess 4:6-7).

Deus ultiónum, Dómine, *Deus ultiónum, effúlge.

God of vengeance, the Lord, God of vengeance, appear.

Exaltáre, qui iúdicas terram, *redde retributiónem supérbis.

Arise, judge of the earth, render unto the proud according to their works.

Usquequo peccatóres, Dómine, *úsquequo peccatóres exsultábunt?

How long will the wicked, the Lord, how long will the sinners triumph?

Effabúntur et loquéntur protérva, *gloriabúntur omnes, qui operántur iniquitátem.

Irruunt in ánimam iusti *et sánguinem innocéntem condémnant.

They hasten against the life of the just, and they condemn innocent blood.

But the Lord is my fortress, my God is the rock where I shelter;

Convertímini et ágite pæniténtiam ab ómnibus iniquitátibus vestris, et non erit vobis in scándalum iniquitátis. Proícite a vobis omnes prævaricatiónes vestras, et fácite vobis cor novum et spíritum novum. Et quare moriémini, domus Israel? Quia nolo mortem moriéntis, dicit Dóminus Deus. Revertímini et vívite.

After this the proper prayer is said straightway and without "Let us pray", with the long conclusion.

Deus, qui et iustis prǽmia meritórum et peccatóribus véniam per pæniténtiam præbes, † tuis supplícibus miserére, * ut reátus nostri conféssio indulgéntiam váleat percípere delictórum. Per Dóminum.

God, who responds to penance by rewarding the righteous and forgiving sinners, have mercy on us, we beseech Thee, and that the confession of our faults may obtain for us the grace of Thy forgiveness.
