Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Messiah, King and victorious

Convenerunt ver adversus puerum tuum Iesum, quem unxisti (Act 4,27)

They have truly banded together against Him whom You anointed (Acts 4:27).

Quare fremuérunt gentes, * et pópuli meditáti sunt inánia?

Why have the Gentiles raged, and the people devised vain things?

The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together, against the Lord, and against his Christ.

“Dirumpámus víncula eórum * et proiciámus a nobis íugum ipsórum!”

Let us break their bonds asunder: and let us cast away their yoke from us.

He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh at them: and the Lord shall deride them.

Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron, and shalt break them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

And now, O ye kings, understand: receive instruction, you that judge the earth.

Serve ye the Lord with fear: and rejoice unto him with trembling.

Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, and you perish from the just way.

The distress of the righteous is answered.

Clamavit Iesus voce magna «Eli, Eli, lama sabachtani» (Mt 27,46)

Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?"

Deus, Deus meus, quare me dereliquísti? * Longe a salúte mea verba rúgitus mei.

O God, my God, wherefore have Thou forsaken me? I groan, and salvation remains far from me!

Deus meus, clamo per diem, et non exáudis, * et nocte, et non est réquies mihi.

My God, I cry during the day, and Thou dost not hearken unto me; and during the night, no rest for me.

Tu autem sanctus es, * qui hábitas in láudibus Israel.

But Thou dwellest in the sanctuary; Thou who are the praise of Israel.

In te speravérunt patres nostri, * speravérunt, et liberásti eos;

Our fathers hoped in Thou; they have hoped, and Thou hast delivered them.

ad te clamavérunt et salvi facti sunt, * in te speravérunt et non sunt confúsi.

They cried out to Thou, and they were saved; they have hoped in Thee, and they have not been confounded.

But I am a worm, and not a man; the reproach of men, and the scum of the people.

Omnes vidéntes me derisérunt me; * torquéntes lábia movérunt caput:

All those who have seen me have laughed at me; with their lips they uttered insult, and they shook their heads.

“Sperávit in Dómino: erípiat eum, * salvum fáciat eum, quóniam vult eum.”

He hoped that the Lord would deliver him; that He may save him, since He loveth him.

Quóniam tu es qui extraxísti me de ventre, * spes mea ad úbera matris meæ.

Yes, it is Thou who have taken me out of my mother's womb; Thou hast been my hope since the time when I sucked her breasts.

In te proiéctus sum ex útero, * de ventre matris meæ Deus meus es tu.

When I came out of her womb, I was thrown on thy knees; since I left his womb, thou art my God.

Ne longe fias a me, † quóniam tribulátio próxima est, * quóniam non est qui adiúvet.

Do not withdraw from me, for temptation is at hand, and there is no one to help me.

Many young bulls surrounded me; fat bulls have besieged me.

They opened their mouths unto me, like a rapturous and roaring lion.

I spread out like water, and all my bones broke apart.

My heart has become like melted wax in the middle of my bowels.

My strength has dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue has clung to my palate; and Thou hast led me unto the dust of the grave.

For many dogs have surrounded me; a band of scoundrels has besieged me.

Fodérunt manus meas et pedes meos, * et dinumerávi ómnia ossa mea.

They pierced my hands and feet, they counted all my bones.

Ipsi vero consideravérunt et inspexérunt me; † divisérunt sibi vestiménta mea * et super vestem meam misérunt sortem.

They looked at me and looked at me. They divided my clothes amongst themselves, and they cast lots on my tunic.

Tu autem, Dómine, ne elongáveris; * fortitúdo mea, ad adiuvándum me festína.

But Thou, Lord, tarry not; my strength, hasten to help me.

Deliver, O God, my soul from the sword, and my life from the power of the dog.

I will declare thy name to my brethren; I will praise Thee in the midst of the assembly.

Qui timétis Dóminum, laudáte eum; * univérsum semen Iácob, glorificáte eum.

Thou who fear the Lord, praise Him; all the race of Jacob, glorify Him.

Métuat eum omne semen Israel, * quóniam non sprevit neque despéxit afflictiónem páuperis

Let the whole race of Israel fear Him, forasmuch as He hath not despised or despised the supplication of the poor,

nec avértit fáciem suam ab eo * et, cum clamáret ad eum, exaudívit.

and that He hath not turned His face away from me; but that He heard me when I cried out to Him.

Apud te laus mea in ecclésia magna; * vota mea reddam in conspéctu timéntium eum.

I will praise Thee in a great assembly; I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who fear Him.

Edent páuperes et saturabúntur; † et laudábunt Dóminum, qui requírunt eum: * “Vívant corda eórum in sǽculum sǽculi!”

The poor will eat and be filled, and those who seek the Lord will praise Him; their hearts will live forevermore and ever.

Reminiscéntur et converténtur ad Dóminum univérsi fines terræ, * et adorábunt in conspéctu eíus univérsæ famíliæ géntium.

All the ends of the earth will keep in remembrance the Lord and be converted to Him; and all the families of the nations will worship Him in His presence;

Quóniam Dómini est regnum, * et ipse dominábitur géntium.

for the kingdom belongs unto the Lord, and He shall rule over the nations.

Ipsum solum adorábunt omnes, qui dórmiunt in terra; * in conspéctu eíus prócident omnes, qui descéndunt in púlverem.

All the rich of the earth have eaten and worshipped; all those who descend into the earth will bow down to Him.

Ánima autem mea illi vivet, * et semen meum sérviet ipsi.

And my soul will live for Him, and my seed will serve Him.

Narrábitur de Dómino generatióni ventúræ; † et annuntiábunt iustítiam eíus pópulo, * qui nascétur: “Hæc fecit Dóminus!”

The seed that is to come will be announced unto the Lord, and the heavens will declare His righteousness unto the people that are to be born, and whom the Lord has made.

Confidence in danger

Ecce tabernaculum Dei cum hominibus (Ap 21, 3).

This is God's tabernacle with men (Rev 21:3).

Dóminus illuminátio mea et salus mea, * quem timébo?

The Lord is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear?

Dóminus protéctor vitæ meæ, * a quo trepidábo?

The Lord is the bulwark of my life: whom shall I fear?

Dum apprópiant super me nocéntes, * ut edant carnes meas;

When the wicked came against me to devour my flesh;

When my adversaries and enemies advanced, they staggered and fell.

Lord, hearken unto my voice, I call upon Thou; have mercy on me and hearken unto me!

My heart says on Thy behalf, Seek My face! "Thy face, Lord, I seek.

You wanted neither sacrifice nor offering, but You formed me into a body (Hebr 10:5).

Exspéctans exspectávi Dóminum, * et inténdit mihi.

I have put all my hope in the Lord: He hath bowed down unto me,

Blessed is the man who has put his trust in the Lord, and who does not turn unto the proud, and to those who are led astray by falsehood.

O Lord my God, thou hast multiplied thy wonders and thy purposes for us: no one is comparable unto thee.

O my God, and Thy law is in the depths of my heart."

Annuntiávi iustítiam tuam in ecclésia magna; * ecce lábia mea non prohibébo, Dómine, tu scisti.

I will proclaim justice in a great assembly; I won't close my lips, Lord, Thou knowest that.

Iustítiam tuam non abscóndi in corde meo, * veritátem tuam et salutáre tuum dixi.

I will not keep Thy righteousness hidden in my heart; I will declare Thy faithfulness and Thy salvation,

Non abscóndi misericórdiam tuam * et veritátem tuam ab ecclésia magna.

I will not hide Thy goodness and Thy truth from the great assembly.

For innumerable evils surround me; my iniquities have seized me, and I cannot behold;

[Let them be confused and ashamed all together, those who seek my soul to destroy it!

Avertántur retrórsum et erubéscant, * qui volunt mihi mala.

Let them shrink back and blush, those who desire my ruin!

Obstupéscant propter confusiónem suam, * qui dicunt mihi: Éuge, éuge.]

Let them be stunned forasmuch as of their shame, those who say unto me: "Ah! ah!" ]

Exsúltent et læténtur in te omnes quæréntes te * et dicant semper: «Magnificétur Dóminus», qui díligunt salutáre tuum.

May all those who seek Thou rejoice and rejoice in Thou! Let them say unceasingly, 'Glory unto the Lord, those who love Thy salvation!'

I am poor and needy, but the Lord will take care of me.

Deliver me from those who work iniquity, and save me from men of blood.
