Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Enlighten my understanding, inflame my love, so that I may recite this office with respect, attention, and devotion, and merit to be heard in the presence of Thy divine majesty. The Lord is my protector

Dormivit et somnum cepit et resurrexit, quoniam Dominus suscepit eum (S. Irenæus).

He lay down and fell asleep, and He rose again because the Lord sustained Him.

Dómine, quid multiplicáti sunt, qui tríbulant me? * Multi insúrgunt advérsum me,

O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.

multi dicunt ánimæ meæ: * «Non est salus ipsi in Deo».

Many say to my soul: * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”

Tu autem, Dómine, protéctor meus es, * glória mea et exáltans caput meum.

But thou, O Lord, art my protector, * my glory, and the lifter up of my head.

Voce mea ad Dóminum clamávi, * et exaudívit me de monte sancto suo.

I have cried to the Lord with my voice, * and he hath heard me from his holy mountain.

Praise the Lord in His providence

I want to bless the Lord at all times; His praise will evermore be in my mouth.

Taste and behold how good the Lord is! Happy is the man who puts his refuge in himself!

Fear the Lord, thou His saints, for there is no need for those who fear Him.

The rich have been in scarcity and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good.

Come, my sons, hearken unto me, and I will teach thou the fear of the Lord.

What man is there who loves life, who desires long days to enjoy happiness?

Preserve thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from deceitful words;

the Lord is near unto the brokenhearted, He saves those whose spirits are cast down.

Many are the misfortunes of the righteous, but from all the Lord delivers him.

He keepeth all his bones, none of them will be broken.

Evil kills the wicked, and the enemies of the righteous are punished.

Dominus salvator in persecutione

The Lord as savior in persecution

Congregati sunt... et consilium fecerunt, ut Iesum dolo tenerent et occiderent. (Mt 26,3,4)

They gathered together and held a council to seize Jesus by deception, and kill Him.

Iúdica, Dómine, iudicántes me; * impúgna impugnántes me.

Judge, Lord, those who judge me; fight those who fight me.

Apprehénde clípeum et scutum * et exsúrge in adiutórium mihi.

Take up Thy weapons and Thy shield and rise up to help me.

Effúnde frámeam et secúrim † advérsus eos, qui persequúntur me. * Dic ánimæ meæ: “Sálus tua ego sum.”

Draw Thy sword and bar the way of those who persecute Me. Say to my soul, 'I am thy salvation.'

Confundántur et revereántur * quæréntes ánimam meam;

Let them be covered with shame and confusion, those who want my life.

Let them retreat and be confounded, those who plot evil against me.

Iniquitous witnesses have risen; They asked me about what I didn't know.

They have not returned evil for good; it was sterility for my soul.

But when they tormented me, I put on a haircloth.

humiliábam in ieiúnio ánimam meam; * et orátio mea in sinu meo convertebátur.

I humbled my soul by fasting, and my prayer returned to my bosom.

Quasi pro próximo et quasi pro fratre meo ambulábam, * quasi lugens matrem contristátus incurvábar.

I had the same compassion for them as I did for a relative or a brother; I bent down as if in mourning and sadness.

Cum autem vacillárem, lætáti sunt et convenérunt; * convenérunt contra me percutiéntes, et ignorávi.

And they rejoiced, and gathered together against me; misfortunes have come upon me, without my knowing the reason.

They have been dispersed; but, without compunction, they have anon put me unto the test; they have overwhelmed me with insults; They gnashed their teeth at me.

Lord, when will Thou behold? Save my soul from their malignity; snatch my only from these lions.

I will praise Thou in a great assembly; I will praise Thee in the midst of a many people.

Let not those who attack me unjustly, who hate me without reason, and who blink their eyes, not rejoice over me.

Fate of the evil-doers and the righteous

Beati mites, quoniam ipsi possidebunt terram (Mt 5,5)

Blessed are the humble, for they shall inherit the earth.

Noli æmulári in malignántibus * neque zeláveris faciéntes iniquitátem,

Envy not the wicked, nor be jealous of those who work iniquity;

quóniam tamquam fenum velóciter aréscent * et quemádmodum herba virens décident.

for they will wither as quickly as grass, and, like the stems of plants, they will wither quickly.

Spera in Dómino et fac bonitátem, * et inhabitábis terram et pascéris in fide.

Hope in the Lord, and do good; then thou shalt dwell on the earth and feed on its riches.

Delectáre in Dómino, * et dabit tibi petitiónes cordis tui.

Put thy delight in the Lord, and He shall grant thou what thy heart asks.

Commítte Dómino viam tuam et spera in eo, * et ipse fáciet;

Discover thy way unto the Lord, and hope in Him, and He Himself will act.

Be subject unto the Lord, and pray to Him. Envy not him who succeeds in his way, the man who commits injustices.

Désine ab ira et derelínque furórem, * noli æmulári, quod vertit ad malum,

Leave anger, and abandon fury; Don't have any desire, it would be wrong.

quóniam qui malignántur, exterminabúntur, * sustinéntes autem Dóminum ipsi hereditábunt terram.

For the wicked will be destroyed; but those who wait patiently for the Lord will have the earth as an inheritance.

Et adhuc pusíllum et non erit peccátor, * et quæres locum eíus et non invénies.

A little whilst longer, and the sinner will be no more; and thou shalt seek his place, and thou shalt not find it.

Mansuéti autem hereditábunt terram * et delectabúntur in multitúdine pacis.

But the meek will possess the earth, and they will delight in the abundance of peace.

Insidiábitur peccátor iústo * et stridébit super eum déntibus suis.

The sinner will watch the righteous, and he shall gnash his teeth against him.

Dóminus autem irridébit eum, * quóniam próspicit quod véniet dies eíus.

But the Lord will laugh at him, forasmuch as he seeth that His day will come.

Gládium evaginavérunt peccatóres, * intendérunt arcum suum,

Sinners have drawn the sword, they have drawn their bows,

ut deíciant páuperem et ínopem, * ut trucídent recte ambulántes in via.

to overthrow the poor and the needy, to slaughter those who have an upright heart.

Gládius eórum intrábit in corda ipsórum, * et arcus eórum confringétur.

Let their sword pierce their own hearts, and let their bow be broken.

Mélius est módicum iústo * super divítias peccatórum multas,

Better the little of the righteous than the great riches of sinners;

quóniam bráchia peccatórum conteréntur, * confírmat autem iústos Dóminus.

for the arms of sinners will be broken, but the Lord strengthens the righteous.

Novit Dóminus dies immaculatórum, * et heréditas eórum in ætérnum erit.

The Lord knows the days of unblemished men, and their inheritance will be eternal.

Non confundéntur in témpore malo * et in diébus famis saturabúntur.

They will not be put to shame in the time of trouble, and in the days of famine they will be filled,

Quia peccatóres períbunt, † inimíci vero Dómini ut decor campórum defícient, * quemádmodum fumus defícient.

forasmuch as sinners will perish. But no sooner have the enemies of the Lord been honored and exalted, than they will fall and vanish like smoke.

Mutuátur peccátor et non solvet, * iústus autem miserétur et tríbuet.

The sinner will borrow and not pay; * But the righteous is compassionate and gives.

Quia benedícti eíus hereditábunt terram, * maledícti autem eíus exterminabúntur.

For those who bless God will possess the earth; but those who curse Him will perish.

A Dómino gressus hóminis confirmántur, * et viam eíus volet.

Man's steps will be directed by the Lord, and he shall delight in His way.

Cum cecíderit, non collidétur, * quia Dóminus susténtat manum eíus.

When it falleth, it will not break, for the Lord supports it with His hand.

Iúnior fui et sénui † et non vidi iústum derelíctum * nec semen eíus quærens panem.

I have been young, and I have grown old; but I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his race begging for bread.

Tota die miserétur et cómmodat, * et semen illíus in benedictióne erit.

All day long he is compassionate and lending, and his race will be blessed.

But the righteous will possess the earth, and they will dwell in it forevermore.

Os iústi meditábitur sapiéntiam, * et lingua eíus loquétur iudícium;

The mouth of the righteous will meditate on wisdom, and his tongue will speak righteousness.

lex Dei eíus in corde ipsíus, * et non vacillábunt gressus eíus.

The law of his God is in his heart, and he shall not be overthrown.

Consíderat peccátor iústum * et quærit mortificáre eum;

The sinner watches the righteous, and he seeketh to put him to death;

Dóminus autem non derelínquet eum in mánibus eíus * nec damnábit eum, cum iudicábitur illi.

But the Lord will not abandon him into his hands, nor will he condemn him when he is judged.

Exspécta Dóminum et custódi viam eíus, † et exaltábit te, ut hereditáte cápias terram; * cum exterminabúntur peccatóres, vidébis.

Wait on the Lord and keep His way; and He shall exalt thou, so that thou may possess the earth as an inheritance. When sinners are exterminated, thou shalt behold.

Keep innocence, and have only equity in view, for good things will remain with the peaceable man.

Stabant omnes noti eius a longe (Lc 23,49)

Everyone He knew stood far away.

Dómine, ne in furóre tuo árguas me * neque in ira tua corrípias me,

Lord, do not rebuke me in Thy wrath, nor punish me in Thy wrath,

quóniam sagíttæ tuæ infíxæ sunt mihi, * et descéndit super me manus tua.

for I have been pierced by Thy arrows, and Thou hast laid Thy hand on me.

Non est sánitas in carne mea a fácie indignatiónis tuæ, * non est pax óssibus meis a fácie peccatórum meórum.

Naught healthy remained in my flesh at the sight of Thy wrath; there is no more peace in my bones at the sight of my sins.

Quóniam iniquitátes meæ supergréssæ sunt caput meum * et sicut onus grave gravant me nimis.

For my iniquities have risen above my head, and like a heavy burden they have weighed down upon me.

My heart is troubled, my strength has left me, and even the light of my eyes is no longer with me.

My friends and relatives walked up unto me, and stopped. Those who were near me stopped at a distance.

And those who wanted my life used violence. Those who sought to harm me spoke lies, and all day long they meditated deception.

But I, as if I had been deaf, did not hearken; and as if I had been dumb, I did not open my mouth.

et factus sum sicut homo non áudiens * et non habens in ore suo redargutiónes.

I have become like a man who does not hearken, and who has no replies in his mouth.

Quóniam in te, Dómine, sperávi, * tu exáudies, Dómine Deus meus.

For in Thou, O Lord, I have hoped; Thou shalt hearken unto me, O Lord my God.

Quia dixi: “Ne quando supergáudeant mihi; * dum commovéntur pedes mei, magnificántur super me.”

For I have said, Let not my enemies rejoice over me, they who, seeing my feet shaken, have spoken insolently of me.

Vanitati creatura subiecta est ...propter eum qui subiecit in spem (Rom 8,20)

Creation has been subjected to vanity ... because of him who subjected it in hope.

Dixi: “Custódiam vias meas, * ut non delínquam in lingua mea;

I said, I will watch over my ways, so that I sin not with my tongue.

ponam ori meo custódiam, * donec consístit peccátor advérsum me.”

I put a guard to my mouth, whilst the sinner rose before me.

Tacens obmútui et sílui absque ullo bono, * et dolor meus renovátus est.

I have been silent, and I have humbled myself, and I have refrained from saying even good things; and my pain was renewed.

Concáluit cor meum intra me, * et in meditatióne mea exársit ignis.

My heart was warmed within me, and whilst I was meditating, a fire was ignited.

Locútus sum in lingua mea: * “Nótum fac mihi, Dómine, finem meum;

The word came on my tongue, "Let me know my end, O Lord,

Exspéctans exspectávi Dóminum, * et inténdit mihi.

I have put all my hope in the Lord: He hath bowed down unto me,

Beátus, qui intéllegit de egéno, * in die mala liberábit eum Dóminus.

Blessed is he who cares for the poor, in the day of trouble the Lord will deliver him.

Dóminus servábit eum et vivificábit eum † et beátum fáciet eum in terra * et non tradet eum in ánimam inimicórum eius.

The Lord will keep him and make him live; he shall be happy on earth, and will not be given over unto the desire of his enemies.
