Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Enlighten my understanding, inflame my love, so that I may recite this office with respect, attention, and devotion, and merit to be heard in the presence of Thy divine majesty. The Lord is my protector

He lay down and fell asleep, and He rose again because the Lord sustained Him.

O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.

Many say to my soul: * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”

Nolite timere eos, qui occidunt corpus (Mt 10, 28).

Do not fear those who kill the body (Mt 10:28).

Wherefore, God, have Thou rejected us forevermore? Wherefore is Thy wrath kindled against the flock of Thy pasture?

Keep in remembrance Thy people whom Thou acquired in the days of old,

Keep in remembrance: the enemy insults the Lord, a foolish people blasphemes Thy name.

Do not give up unto the beasts the soul of Thy turtledove, do not forget forevermore the life of Thy poor.

Beware of Thy covenant! for every corner of the country is full of dens of violence.

Dominus summus iudex

The Lord, supreme judge

Deposuit potentes de sede et exaltavit humiles (Lc 1, 52).

He removes the mighty from their thrones and exalts the humble (Lk 1:52).

Confitébimur tibi, Deus; † confitébimur et invocábimus nomen tuum: *narrábimus mirabília tua.

We will praise Thou, O God; we will praise Thou, and we will call on Thy name; we will tell of Thy wonders.

Cum statúero tempus, *ego iustítias iudicábo.

In the time that I have appointed, I will do perfect justice.

The earth has dissolved, with all those who dwell in it, and I have strengthened its pillars.

Remembering God's works

In omnibus tribulationem patimur, sed non angustiamur (2 Cor 4, 8).

We are pressed on every side, but not overwhelmed (2 Cor 4:8).

My voice cries out to God; my voice is raised to God and He heareth me.

In die tribulatiónis meæ Deum exquisívi, † manus meæ nocte expánsæ sunt * et non fatigántur.

In the day of my trouble, I seek the Lord; my hands are stretched out at night without tiring.

Rénuit consolári ánima mea; † memor sum Dei et ingemísco, * exérceor, et déficit spíritus meus.

My soul refuses all consolation, I keep in remembrance God, and I groan, I meditate, and my spirit is depressed.

Vígiles tenuísti pálpebras óculi mei; * turbátus sum et non sum locútus.

Thou hold my eyelids open; and, in my agitation, I cannot speak.

I keep in remembrance my hymns during the night, I reflect within my heart, and my spirit wonders:

Will the Lord reject forevermore, will He no longer be favorable?

Has God forgotten His mercy, has He withdrawn His mercy in His wrath?

And I said, "Now I'm starting. This change comes from the right hand of the Most High."

I want to keep in remembrance the works of the Lord, for I keep in remembrance Thy wonders of old,

I want to reflect on all Thy works, and meditate on Thy great deeds.

Atténdite, pópule meus, doctrínam meam; * inclináte aurem vestram in verba oris mei.

My people, hearken unto My doctrine; give ear unto the words of My mouth.

Apériam in parábolis os meum, * éloquar arcána ætátis antíquæ.

I will open my mouth to speak in parables; I will speak of what has been hidden since ancient times.

Quanta audívimus et cognóvimus ea, † et patres nostri narravérunt nobis, * non occultábimus a fíliis eórum,

What we have heard and learned, and what our fathers have told us, they have not hidden from their children

that they do not forget the works of God, and that they seek His commandments;

lest they become, like their fathers, an evil and exasperating race;

a race that has not kept its heart upright, and whose spirit has not remained faithful to God.

The sons of Ephraim, skilled in drawing the bow and drawing from it, turned their backs on the day of battle.

They did not keep the covenant made with God, and did not want to walk in His law.

They have forgotten His blessings, and the wonders He had shown them.

when the wrath of God rose up against them. And He killed the strongest of them, and He brought down the elite of Israel.

After all this they sinned anon, and they had no faith in His wonders.

Then their days passed like a breath, and their years precipitated their course.

When He put them to death, they sought Him, and they turned around, and they hastened to return to Him.

They angered His anger on their hills, and they provoked His jealousy by their idols.

God heard, and He despised Israel, and reduced them unto the last humiliation.

And He rejected the tabernacle of Shiloh, His tabernacle where He had dwelt amongst men.

And He gave His strength into captivity, and His glory into the hands of the enemy.

The fire devoured their young men, and their virgins were not married.

He chose David His servant, and brought him out of the flocks of sheep; He took him from behind the mother sheep,

O God, the nations have attacked Thy inheritance, they have desecrated Thy holy temple, they have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins.

They have given the corpses of Thy servants unto the fowls of the air, and the flesh of Thy faithful unto the beasts of the earth.

Cognoscant hostes contra Israel coniurati, quod Dominus solus Altissimus in omni terra.

Let the enemies gathered against Israel know that the Lord alone is the Most High over all the earth.

Our salvation is near

Thou hast been favorable to Thy country, Lord, Thou hast brought back Jacob's captives.
