La règle dit que pour tendre à sa perfection, il faut se revêtir de l'esprit de Jésus-Christ. Ceci veut dire que pour se perfectionner et assister utilement les peuples, pour bien servir les ecclésiastiques, il nous faut travailler à imiter la perfection de Jésus-Christ et tâcher d'y parvenir. Cela dit aussi que par nous-mêmes nous n'y pouvons rien. Il faut se remplir et être animé de cet esprit de Jésus-Christ. Pour bien entendre ceci, il faut savoir que son esprit est répandu dans tous les chrétiens qui vivent selon les règles du christianisme ; leurs actions et leurs œuvres sont parsemées de l'Esprit de Dieu.
Mais quel est cet esprit-là ainsi répandu ? Quand on dit : "L'esprit de notre Seigneur est en telle personne ou en telles actions", comment cela s'entend-il ? Est-ce que le Saint-Esprit même s'est répandu en elles ? Oui, le Saint-Esprit, quant à sa personne, se répand dans les justes et habite personnellement en eux. Quand on dit que le Saint-Esprit opère en quelqu'un, cela s'entend que cet Esprit, résidant en cette personne, lui donne les mêmes inclinations et dispositions que Jésus-Christ avait sur la terre, et elles le font agir de même, je ne dis pas d'une égale perfection, mais selon la mesure des dons de ce divin Esprit.
Mais qu'est-ce que l'esprit de notre Seigneur ? C'est un esprit de parfaite charité, rempli d'une merveilleuse estime de la divinité et d'un désir infini de l'honorer dignement, une connaissance des grandeurs de son Père pour les admirer et les extoller incessamment. Il en a une si haute estime qu'il lui faisait hommage de toutes les choses qui étaient en sa personne sacrée et qui en sortaient ; il lui attribuait tout ; il ne voulait pas dire que sa doctrine fût sa doctrine, mais il la référait à son Père. Et son amour quel était-il ? En pouvait-il avoir un plus grand que de s'anéantir pour lui ?
