They who dwell in the Word will rejoice without end.

Give ear, O Lord, to my words, understand my cry.

Inténde voci clamóris mei, * rex meus et Deus meus.

Hearken to the voice of my prayer, O my King and my God.

For to thee will I pray: O Lord, in the morning thou shalt hear my voice. In the morning I will stand before thee, and will see:

O Lord, my God, in thee have I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me.

Lest at any time he seize upon my soul like a lion, while there is no one to redeem me, nor to save.

Desire for God and His temple

Qui sitit, veniat; qui vult, accipiat aquam vitæ (Ap 22, 17).

He who thirsts, let him come and receive the water of life (Rev 22:17).

Quemádmodum desíderat cervus ad fontes aquárum, * ita desíderat ánima mea ad te, Deus.

As the deer longs for the springs of the waters, so my soul longs for Thou, my God.

Sitívit ánima mea ad Deum, Deum vivum; * quando véniam et apparébo ante fáciem Dei?

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When will I come, and appear before the face of God?

Fuérunt mihi lácrimæ meæ panis die ac nocte, * dum dícitur mihi quotídie: «Ubi est Deus tuus?».

My tears have been my food day and night, whilst I am told every day, "Where is thy God?"

Hæc recordátus sum et effúdi in me ánimam meam; † quóniam transíbam in locum tabernáculi admirábilis * usque ad domum Dei,

I remembered these things, and poured out my soul within myself; for I will pass through the place of the wonderful tabernacle unto the house of God,

in voce exsultatiónis et confessiónis, * multitúdinis festa celebrántis.

amongst the songs of joy and praise, like the sound of a feast.

Quare tristis es, ánima mea, * et quare conturbáris in me?

Wherefore are thou sad, my soul, and wherefore do thou trouble me?

Spera in Deo, quóniam adhuc confitébor illi, * salutáre vultus mei et Deus meus.

Hope in God, for I will praise Him anon, the salvation of my countenance and my God.

In meípso ánima mea contristáta est; † proptérea memor ero tui * de terra Iordánis et Hermónim, de monte Misar.

My soul has been all troubled within myself; wherefore I will keep in remembrance Thou, the land of Jordan, Hermon, and Mount Misar.

Abyssus abyssum ínvocat in voce cataractárum tuárum; * omnes gúrgites tui et fluctus tui super me transiérunt.

The abyss calls unto the abyss, at the sound of Thy cataracts; all Thy heaped waves and Thy waves passed over me.

In die mandávit Dóminus misericórdiam suam, † et nocte cánticum eius apud me est: * orátio ad Deum vitæ meæ.

During the day the Lord sent His mercy, and at night His song. Within me is a prayer for the God of my life.

Dicam Deo: * «Suscéptor meus es.

I will say to God, "Thou art my defender.

Quare oblítus es mei, et quare contristátus incédo, * dum afflígit me inimícus?».

Wherefore have Thou forgotten me, and wherefore should I walk sorrowfully, whilst the enemy afflicts me? ».

Dum confringúntur ossa mea, † exprobravérunt mihi, qui tríbulant me, * dum dicunt mihi quotídie: «Ubi est Deus tuus?».

Whilst my bones are broken, my enemies who persecute me overwhelm me with their reproaches, saying unto me every day, "Where is his God?"
