Ad invitatorium
Warning: the monastic cursus is still under construction. There may still be many errors.
Amen.
Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Enlighten my understanding, inflame my love, so that I may recite this office with respect, attention, and devotion, and merit to be heard in the presence of Thy divine majesty. Through Christ our Lord. r. Amen.

Psalmus 3
Psalm 3
Dominus protector meus
The Lord is my protector
Dormivit et somnum cepit et resurrexit, quoniam Dominus suscepit eum (S. Irenæus).
He lay down and fell asleep, and He rose again because the Lord sustained Him.
Dómine, quid multiplicáti sunt, qui tríbulant me? * Multi insúrgunt advérsum me,
O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.
multi dicunt ánimæ meæ: * «Non est salus ipsi in Deo».
Many say to my soul: * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”
But thou, O Lord, art my protector, * my glory, and the lifter up of my head.
I have cried to the Lord with my voice, * and he hath heard me from his holy mountain.
Ego obdormívi et soporátus sum,> * exsurréxi, quia Dóminus suscépit me.
I have slept and have taken my rest, * and I have risen up, because the Lord hath protected me.
Non timébo mília pópuli circumdántis me. * Exsúrge, Dómine, salvum me fac, Deus meus;
I will not fear thousands of the people that surround me. * Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God.
quóniam tu percussísti in maxíllam omnes adversántes mihi, * dentes peccatórum contrivísti.
For thou hast struck all them who are my adversaries without cause; * thou hast broken the teeth of sinners.
Salvation is of the Lord, * and thy blessing is upon thy people.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, and ever shall be. Amen.

Regem Deúmque annúntiant thesáurus et fragrans odor turis Sabǽi, at mýrrheus pulvis sepúlcrum prǽdocet.
Solemn things of mystic meaning: Incense doth the God disclose; Gold a royal child proclaimeth; Myrrh a future tomb foreshows.
O sola magnárum úrbium maior Bethlem, cui cóntigit ducem salútis cǽlitus incorporátum gígnere!
Bethlehem, of noblest cities None can once with thee compare; Thou alone the Lord from heaven Didst for us incarnate bear.
Hunc et prophétis téstibus isdémque signatóribus testátor et sator iubet adíre regnum et cérnere:
‘Tis He the Prophets’ words foretold, And by their signs shown forth of old; The Father’s witness hath ordained That we should hear with faith unfeigned.
Amen.

Supplication of the Word of God
Behold, a voice from heaven said, "This is My beloved Son" (Mt 3:17).
Afférte Dómino, fílii Dei, * afférte Dómino glóriam et poténtiam,
Bring unto the Lord, the Son of God. Give glory and power unto the Lord,

Gratiarum actio pro populi salute
Thanksgiving for the salvation of the people
Sustulit me in spiritu super montem magnum... et ostendit mihi civitatem sanctam Ierusalem (Ap 21,10).
He took me in the Spirit to a great mountain... And he showed me the holy city, Jerusalem (Rev 21:10).
Magnus Dóminus et laudábilis nimis * in civitáte Dei nostri.
The Lord is great, He is the object of all praise, in the city of our God,
Mons sanctus eius collis speciósus, * exsultátio univérsæ terræ.
His holy mountain rises gracefully, the joy of the whole earth.
Mons Sion, extréma aquilónis, * cívitas regis magni.
Mount Zion, at the northern extremities, the city of the great king.
God, in his palaces, has made Himself known as a refuge.
Quóniam ecce reges congregáti sunt, * convenérunt in unum.
For behold, the kings had gathered together, and together they had come forward.
Ipsi cum vidérunt, sic admiráti sunt, * conturbáti sunt, diffugérunt;
They saw, suddenly they were stupefied, distraught, they fled;
illic tremor apprehéndit eos, * dolóres ut parturiéntis.
there a trembling seized them, a pain like that of a woman who gives birth.
In spíritu oriéntis * cónteres naves Tharsis.
With the east wind Thou break the ships of Tharsis.
Sicut audívimus, sic vídimus in civitáte Dómini virtútum, † in civitáte Dei nostri; * Deus fundávit eam in ætérnum.
What we had heard we saw in the city of the Lord of hosts; in the city of our God: God establishes it forevermore.
Recogitámus, Deus, misericórdiam tuam * in médio templi tui.
O God, we keep in remembrance Thy goodness in the midst of Thy temple.
Secúndum nomen tuum, Deus, † sic et laus tua in fines terræ; * iustítia plena est déxtera tua.
As Thy name, O God, so Thy praise reaches unto the ends of the earth; Thy right hand is full of justice.
Lætétur mons Sion, † et exsúltent fíliæ Iudæ * propter iudícia tua.
Let Mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah rejoice forasmuch as of Thy judgments.
Go through Zion and go around it; count its fortresses.
observe its rampart, examine its palaces, to tell it unto the future generation.
Quóniam hic est Deus, Deus noster † in ætérnum et in sǽculum sǽculi; * ipse ducet nos in sǽcula.
This is God who is our God forevermore and evermore; He shall be our guide in all ages.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

De libro Isaíæ prophétæ
Lectio I
r. Dies sanctificátus illúxit nobis: veníte, gentes, et adoráte Dóminum, * Quia hódie appáruit lux magna in terris. v. Veníte, adorémus eum; quia ipse est Dóminus Deus noster. * Quia. v. Glória Patri. * Quia.

Psalmus 85 (86)
Psalm 85 (86)
Pauperis in rebus adversis oratio
Prayer of the poor in the face of adversity
Benedictus Deus, qui consolatur nos in omni tribulatione nostra (2 Cor 1, 3. 4).
Blessed be God, who comforts us in all our tribulations (2 Cor 1:3, 4).
Inclína, Dómine, aurem tuam et exáudi me, * quóniam inops et pauper sum ego.
Incline thy ear, O Lord, and hearken unto me, for I am needy and poor.
Custódi ánimam meam, quóniam sanctus sum; * salvum fac servum tuum, Deus meus, sperántem in te.
Guard my soul, for I am pious; save Thy servant, O my God, he puts his trust in Thou.
Have mercy on me, Lord, forasmuch as to Thou I have cried all day.
Lætífica ánimam servi tui, * quóniam ad te, Dómine, ánimam meam levávi.
Rejoice the soul of Thy servant, for to Thou, Lord, I have lifted up my soul.
Quóniam tu, Dómine, suávis et mitis * et multæ misericórdiæ ómnibus invocántibus te.
For Thou art good, O Lord, and merciful, and full of compassion for all who call upon Thou.
Auribus pércipe, Dómine, oratiónem meam * et inténde voci deprecatiónis meæ.
Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer, and hearken unto the voice of my supplications.
In die tribulatiónis meæ clamávi ad te, * quia exáudies me.
I call upon Thou in the day of my trouble, and Thou shalt hearken unto me.
No one equals Thou amongst the gods, Lord, naught resembles Thy works.
Omnes gentes, quascúmque fecísti, vénient † et adorábunt coram te, Dómine, * et glorificábunt nomen tuum,
All the nations that Thou hast made will come and worship Thou, O Lord, and give glory to Thy name,
quóniam magnus es tu et fáciens mirabília: * tu es Deus solus.
for Thou art great and Thou work wonders: Thou alone are God.
Doce me, Dómine, viam tuam, * et ingrédiar in veritáte tua;
Teach me thy ways, Lord; I want to walk in Thy faithfulness;
simplex fac cor meum, * ut tímeat nomen tuum.
make my heart simple, that it may fear Thy name.
Confitébor tibi, Dómine Deus meus, in toto corde meo * et glorificábo nomen tuum in ætérnum,
I will praise Thee with all my heart, O Lord my God, and glorify Thy name for eternity.
For Thy mercy is great unto me, Thou hast rescued my soul from the depths of hell.
O God, the proud have rebelled against me, and the assembly of the mighty has sought my soul, and they have not placed Thee before their gaze.
Et tu, Dómine, Deus miserátor et miséricors * pátiens et multæ misericórdiæ et veritátis,
But Thou, Lord, are a merciful and compassionate God, patient, of great mercy and truth.
réspice in me et miserére mei; † da fortitúdinem tuam púero tuo * et salvum fac fílium ancíllæ tuæ.
Turn thy eyes towards me and have mercy on me; give thy strength to thy servant, and save the son of thy handmaid.
Fac mecum signum in bonum, † ut vídeant, qui odérunt me, et confundántur, * quóniam tu, Dómine, adiuvísti me et consolátus es me..
Mark Thy kindness unto me, that my enemies may behold it and be confounded, for it is Thou, the Lord, who assist and comfort me.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Psalmus 95 (96)
Psalm 95 (96)
Dominus rex et iudex omnis terræ
The Lord is King and Judge of all the earth
Cantabant quasi canticum novum ante sedem in conspectu Agni (Cf. Ap 14, 3).
They sang like a new hymn before the throne in the presence of the Lamb (Cf. Rev 14:3).
Cantáte Dómino cánticum novum, * cantáte Dómino, omnis terra.
Sing unto the Lord a new song, sing unto the Lord, the whole earth.
Sing unto the Lord, bless His name! Proclaim His salvation from day to day,
Tell of His glory amongst the nations, His wonders amongst all the people.
For the Lord is great and worthy of all praise, He is dreadful above all gods,
Quóniam omnes dii géntium inánia, * Dóminus autem cælos fecit.
for all the gods of the nations are naught. But the Lord made the heavens.

Render unto the Lord, family of nations, render unto the Lord glory and power, render unto the Lord the glory due to His name.

Bring the offering and come to His courts, prostrate yourselves before the Lord with the sacred ornament.
Contremíscite a fácie eius, univérsa terra, * dícite in géntibus: «Dóminus regnavit!».
Tremble before Him, thou inhabitants of all the earth, say amongst the nations, "The Lord is king!"
wherefore the world will be stable and will not totter; He shall judge the people fairly.

Gloria Domini in iudicio
Glory to God in his justice
Hic psalmus salutem mundi significat et fidem omnium gentium in ipsum (S. Athanasius).
This psalm signifies the salvation of the world and the faith of every nation in him (S. Athanasius).
Dóminus regnávit! Exsúltet terra, * læténtur ínsulæ multæ.
The Lord is king: let the earth rejoice, let the many islands rejoice.
The cloud and the shadow surround him, justice and equity are the basis of His throne.
Fire advances before Him, and devours His adversaries around him.
His lightning illuminates the world: the earth sees him and trembles.
Montes sicut cera fluxérunt a fácie Dómini, * a fácie Dómini omnis terra.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim His righteousness, and all peoples behold His glory.
They will be confounded all the worshippers of images, who are proud of their idols. All the angels bow down before Him.
Zion has heard and rejoiced, and the daughters of Judah are glad forasmuch as of Thy judgments, O Lord.
Quóniam tu Dóminus, Altíssimus super omnem terram, * nimis exaltátus es super omnes deos.
For Thou, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth, and are supremely exalted above all the gods.
Qui dilígitis Dóminum, odíte malum; † custódit ipse ánimas sanctórum suórum, * de manu peccatóris liberábit eos.
Thou who love the Lord, hate evil; He guards the souls of His faithful, He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the righteous in heart.
Righteous, rejoice in the Lord, and give glory to His Holy Name.

The Lord reigns! The people tremble; He is seated on the Cherubim; the earth is tottering.
Dóminus in Sion magnus * et excélsus super omnes pópulos.
The Lord is great in Zion, exalted above all peoples.
Let them praise Thy great and dreadful name, for it is holy!
Rex potens iudícium díligit: † tu statuísti, quæ recta sunt, * iudícium et iustítiam in Iacob tu fecísti.
Let us praise the power of the King who loves righteousness, Thou establish righteousness, Thou exercise righteousness and equity in Jacob.
Exalt the Lord our God, and bow down before the stool of His feet, for He is holy!
Moses and Aaron were amongst His priests, and Samuel amongst those who called on His name.
They called on the Lord, and He heard them, He spake unto them in the pillar of cloud.
They kept His testimonies, and the precept that He gave them.
Dómine Deus noster, tu exaudiébas eos; † Deus, tu propítius fuísti eis, * ulcíscens autem adinventiónes eórum.
O Lord our God, Thou didst hearken unto them, and thou wast a merciful God unto them, and hast punished them for their trespasses.

Hodie magi ab Oriénte venérunt, ortum solem iustítiæ requiréntes, eum de quo légitur: Ecce vir, Oriens nomen illi. Hódie adoravérunt novum Vírginis partum, sequéntes novi síderis ductum. Nonne et hic nobis est magna consolátio? Quid fácitis, o magi, quid fácitis? Lacténtem púerum adorátis, in tugúrio vili, in vílibus pannis?
r. Illumináre, illumináre Ierúsalem, venit lux tua, * Et glória Dómini super te orta est. v. Et ambulábunt gentes in lúmine tuo, et reges in splendóre ortus tui. * Et.
Lectio II

A régia civitáte, ubi regem quæréndum coniectabántur, ad Béthlehem villam párvulam dirigúntur: ingrediúntur stábulum, invéniunt involútum pannis infántulum.

Verbum Domini manet in æternum.
Loquímini ad cor Ierúsalem et clamáte ad eam, † quóniam compléta est malítia eius, * expiáta est iníquitas illíus;
Vox clamántis: † «In desérto paráte viam Dómini, * rectas fácite in solitúdine sémitas Dei nostri.»
Omnis vallis exaltétur * et omnis mons et collis humiliétur;
Omnis caro fenum, * et omnis glória eius quasi flos agri;

Joy and consolation in the holy city.
Illa, quæ sursum est Ierusalem, libera est, quæ est mater nostra (Gal 4, 26).
The Jerusalem above is free; she is our mother (Gal 4:26).
Lætámini cum Ierúsalem et exsultáte in ea, * omnes, qui dilígitis eam;
Rejoice with Jerusalem, and rejoice for her, all thou who love her;
Leap for joy with her, all thou who wept over her,
that thou may be suckled and satiated at the breast with his consolations,
so that thou may enjoy with delight the fullness of his glory.
Quia hæc dicit Dóminus: † «Ecce ego dírigam ad eam quasi flúvium pacem, * et quasi torréntem inundántem glóriam géntium.
For thus saith the Lord: "Behold, I am going to cause peace to flow over her like a river, and the glory of the nations like a torrent that overflows.
Sugétis, in ulnis portabímini, * et super génua blandiéntur vobis.
Thou shalt be breastfed, carried on the breast, caressed on the knees.
As a man whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort thou, and thou shalt be comforted in Jerusalem.
Vidébitis, et gaudébit cor vestrum, * et ossa vestra quasi herba germinábunt».
Thou shalt behold it, and thy hearts will rejoice, and thy bones will be as strong as grass."

Lectio I
Lectio II
* In. v. Glória Patri. * In.

Te per orbem terrárum sancta confitétur Ecclésia, Patrem imménsæ maiestátis;
venerandum tuum verum et unicum Filium;
Fiat misericórdia tua, Dómine, super nos, quemádmodum sperávimus in te.

At illi dixérunt ei: “In Béthlehem Iudǽæ.
