Amen.
Open my mouth, Lord, that it may bless Thy Holy Name, and cleanse my heart also from every vain, evil, and foreign thought. Psalmus 3
Psalm 3
Dominus protector meus
The Lord is my protector
Dormivit et somnum cepit et resurrexit, quoniam Dominus suscepit eum (S. Irenæus).
He lay down and fell asleep, and He rose again because the Lord sustained Him.
Dómine, quid multiplicáti sunt, qui tríbulant me? * Multi insúrgunt advérsum me,
O Lord, why are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.
multi dicunt ánimæ meæ: * «Non est salus ipsi in Deo».
Many say to my soul: * “There is no salvation for him in his God.”
But thou, O Lord, art my protector, * my glory, and the lifter up of my head.
I have cried to the Lord with my voice, * and he hath heard me from his holy mountain.
Ego obdormívi et soporátus sum,> * exsurréxi, quia Dóminus suscépit me.
I have slept and have taken my rest, * and I have risen up, because the Lord hath protected me.
Non timébo mília pópuli circumdántis me. * Exsúrge, Dómine, salvum me fac, Deus meus;
I will not fear thousands of the people that surround me. * Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God.
quóniam tu percussísti in maxíllam omnes adversántes mihi, * dentes peccatórum contrivísti.
For thou hast struck all them who are my adversaries without cause; * thou hast broken the teeth of sinners.
Salvation is of the Lord, * and thy blessing is upon thy people.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, and ever shall be. Amen.

Post calamitatem oratio
Prayer after a calamity
In mundo pressuram habetis, sed confidite, ego vici mundum (Io 16, 33).
You will have trials in the world, but be confident, I have overcome the world (Io 16, 33).
Deus, reppulísti nos, destruxísti nos. * Irátus es. Convértere ad nos!
O God, Thou rejected us, Thou scattered us: Thou wast angry. Repay us Thy favor!
Thou hast shaken the country, Thou hast torn it apart: repair its breaches, for it is tottering.
Ostendísti pópulo tuo dura, * potásti nos vino vertíginis.
Thou hast made Thy people behold severe trials, Thou hast made us drink a wine of vertigo.
Dedísti metuéntibus te signum, * ut fúgiant a fácie arcus.
Thou hast given those who fear Thou a banner, that they may flee from the bow.
That Thy beloved ones may be delivered, save by Thy right hand, and hearken unto us.
God spoke in his holiness: "I will leap for joy. I will have Shechem as my portion, and I will measure the valley of Succoth.
Gilead is mine, Manasseh, and Ephraim is the armor of my head.
Iuda sceptrum meum, * Moab olla lavácri mei.
And Judah my scepter, Moab is the basin where I wash.
Super Idumæam exténdam calceaméntum meum, * super Philistæam vociferábor».
On Edom I throw my sandal; land of the Philistines, utter acclamations in my honor."
Quis addúcet me in civitátem munítam? * Quis dedúcet me usque in Idumæam?
Who will lead me unto the fortified city? Who will take me to Edom?
Was it not Thou, O God, who rejected us, O God, who no longer went out with our armies?
Lend us Thy help against the oppressor! The help of man is vanity.
In Deo faciémus virtútem, * et ipse conculcábit tribulántes nos.
With God we will accomplish feats; He shall crush our enemies.

Quia factus es spes mea, * turris fortitúdinis a fácie inimíci.
For Thou art a refuge for me, a mighty tower from the enemy.
Inhabitábo in tabernáculo tuo in sǽcula, * prótegar in velaménto alárum tuárum,
I would like to remain forevermore in Thy tent, to take refuge in the shelter of Thy wings,
quóniam tu, Deus meus, exaudísti vota mea, * dedísti hereditátem timéntium nomen tuum.
for Thou, O God, grant my wishes, Thou hast given me the inheritance of those who revere Thy name.

Add days unto the king's days, may his years be prolonged from age to age!

Pax in Deo
Peace in God
Deus spei repleat vos omni pace in credendo (Rom 15, 13).
May the God of hope give you full joy and peace in your act of faith. (Rom 15:13).
Yes, to God my soul in peace surrenders itself, from Him comes my help.
Yes, He is my refuge and my salvation; He is my fortress: I will not be quite shaken.
Quoúsque irrúitis in hóminem, † contúnditis univérsi vos * tamquam paríetem inclinátum et macériam depúlsam?
How long will thou throw yourself upon a man, to pull him down all together, like a fence that leans, like a wall that falls down?
Verúmtamen de excélso suo cogitavérunt depéllere; † delectabántur mendácio. * Ore suo benedicébant et corde suo maledicébant.
Yes, they plot to hurl him from his height; they delight in lying; they bless with their mouths, and they curse in their hearts.
In Deo tantum quiésce, ánima mea, * quóniam ab ipso patiéntia mea.
Yes, O my soul, to God surrender yourself in peace; for from Him comes my endurance.
Yes, He is my God and my salvation; He is my fortress: I will not waver.
In Deo salutáre meum et glória mea; * Deus fortitúdinis meæ, et refúgium meum in Deo est.
On God rest my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, my refuge, is in God.
Speráte in eo, omnis congregátio pópuli, † effúndite coram illo corda vestra; * Deus refúgium nobis.
At all times, O people, trust in Him; pour out thy hearts before Him: God is our refuge.
Verúmtamen vánitas fílii Adam, * mendácium fílii hóminum.
Yes, mortals are vanity, the sons of man are lies;
in the balance they would rise, all together lighter than a breath.
Nolíte speráre in violéntia † et in rapína nolíte décipi; * divítiæ si áffluant, nolíte cor appónere.
Do not hope in violence, and do not trust in rapine; If thy riches increase, do not attach thy heart unto them.
Semel locútus est Deus, * duo hæc audívi:
God said a word, or two, that I heard:
quia potéstas Deo est, † et tibi, Dómine, misericórdia; * quia tu reddes unicuíque iuxta ópera sua.
The power is God's; to Thou also, Lord, mercy. For Thou render to each one according to his works.
Amen.

Hymnus ad sacrificium gratiarum actionis
Hymn for the sacrifice of thanksgiving
De resurrectione Domini et conversione gentium (Hesychius)
The Lord's resurrection and the conversion of the nations
Iubiláte Deo, omnis terra, †psalmum dícite glóriæ nóminis eíus, * glorificáte laudem eíus.
Shout to God for joy, O whole earth; sing a hymn to His Name; make His praise glorious.
Dícite Deo: “Quam terribília sunt ópera tua. * Præ multitúdine virtútis tuæ blandiéntur tibi inimíci tui.
Tell God: How terrible Thy works are. Forasmuch as of the greatness of Thy power, Thy enemies pay Thou lying tributes.
Omnis terra adóret te et psallat tibi, * psalmum dicat nómini tuo.”
Let the earth worship Thee and chant in Thy honor, let it chant in honor of Thy name.
Veníte et vidéte ópera Dei, * terríbilis in adinventiónibus super fílios hóminum.
Come and behold the works of God, He is terrible in His designs upon the children of men.
Convértit mare in áridam, † et in flúmine pertransíbunt pede; * ibi lætábimur in ipso.
He hath changed the sea into dry land; and they crossed the river on foot, and there we will rejoice in Him.
Qui dominátur in virtúte sua in ætérnum, † óculi eíus super gentes respíciunt; * rebélles non exalténtur in semetípsis.
He who dominates forevermore by His power, His eyes behold the nations; let not those who irritate him rise in themselves.
Benedícite, gentes, Deum nostrum * et audítam fácite vocem laudis eíus;
Nations, bless our God, and let the accents of His praise be heard;
He who has given life to our souls, and who has not allowed our feet to be shaken.
Quóniam probásti nos, Deus; * igne nos examinásti, sicut examinátur argéntum.
For Thou hast tried us, O God; Thou hast made us pass through the fire, as money is passed through it.
Induxísti nos in láqueum, * posuísti tribulatiónes in dorso nostro.
Thou hast made us fall into the trap, Thou hast burdened our shoulders with tribulation.
Thou hast put men on our heads, we have passed through fire and water, and thou hast taken us out of them to put us in a place of refreshment.
Introíbo in domum tuam in holocáustis; * reddam tibi vota mea,
I will enter Thy house with burnt offerings; I will fulfill my vows to Thou
quæ protulérunt lábia mea, * et locútum est os meum in tribulatióne mea.
which my lips have spoken, and my mouth has spoken during my tribulation.
Holocáusta medulláta ófferam tibi cum incénso aríetum, * ófferam tibi boves cum hircis.
I will offer Thou fat burnt offerings, with the smoke of rams, I will offer Thou oxen with goats.
Come, hearken, all thou who fear God, and I will tell thee all that He hath done to my soul.
My mouth cried out to Him, and my tongue exalted Him.
If I had seen iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have heard me.
Proptérea exaudívit Deus, * atténdit voci deprecatiónis meæ.
That is wherefore God has heard me, and has been attentive unto the voice of my supplication.
Benedíctus Deus, qui non amóvit oratiónem meam * et misericórdiam suam a me.
Blessed be God, who has not rejected my prayer, nor removed His mercy from me.
Amen.

May God arise, and let His enemies be dispelled, and let them flee, those who hate Him, before His face.
Sicut dissipátur fumus, tu díssipas; † sicut fluit cera a fácie ignis, * sic péreunt peccatóres a fácie Dei.
As the smoke disappears, let them disappear; as wax melts before fire, so do sinners perish before the face of God.
Et iústi læténtur et exsúltent in conspéctu Dei * et delecténtur in lætítia.
But let the righteous be as in a feast, and let them tremble in the presence of God, and let them be in transports of joy.
Cantáte Deo, psalmum dícite nómini eíus; † iter fácite ei, qui fertur super nubes: * Dóminus nomen illi.
Sing to God, praise His Name with a song; make way for Him who ascends unto the west. The Lord is His Name.
Iubiláte in conspéctu eíus; †pater orphanórum et iúdex viduárum, * Deus in habitáculo sancto suo.
Leap for joy in His presence. We will tremble before Him. He is the father of orphans and the judge of widows. God is in His holy place.
Deus, qui inhabitáre facit desolátos in domo, † qui edúcit vinctos in prosperitátem; * verúmtamen rebélles habitábunt in árida terra.
It is the God who causes those who have the same spirit to dwell in the same house; who delivers the captives by His power, as well as those who anger Him, who dwell in the tombs.
O God, when Thou walkedst at the head of Thy people, when Thou crossed the desert,
étiam cæli distillavérunt a fácie Dei Sínai, * a fácie Dei Israel.
the earth was shaken, the heavens themselves melted before the God of Sinai, before the God of Israel.
Plúviam voluntáriam effundébas, Deus; * hereditátem tuam infirmátam, tu refecísti eam.
Thou hast set up a voluntary rain, O God, for Thy inheritance; and when he was weakened, Thou comforted him.
Animália tua habitábant in ea, * parásti in bonitáte tua páuperi, Deus.
Thy animals will dwell there: Thou hast in Thy goodness, O God, prepared food for the poor.
Dóminus dat verbum; * vírgines annuntiántes bona sunt agmen ingens:
The Lord gives His commands to His messengers with great power.
“Reges exercítuum fúgiunt, fúgiunt, * et spécies domus dívidit spólia.
The kings of armies flee, will flee; and she who is the ornament of the house divides the spoils.
When thou sleep in the midst of thy inheritances, the dove's wings are silver, and the end of its back has the pale lustre of gold.
Dum dispérgit Omnípotens reges super eam, * nive dealbátur Selmon.”
When the Most High scatters the kings in the land, all is whitened by the snows on the Selmon.
Mons Dei mons Basan, * mons cacúminum mons Basan.
The mountain of God is a fat mountain. It's a massive mountain, a fat mountain.
* Étenim Dóminus habitábit in finem.
Wherefore do thou behold in awe at the massive mountains? There is a mountain where it hath pleased God to dwell; and the Lord will dwell there forevermore.
Currus Dei decem mília mílium: * Dóminus venit de Sínai in sancta.
The chariot of God is surrounded by more than ten thousand; the Lord comes from Sinai into His sanctuary.
Ascendísti in altum, captívam duxísti captivitátem; † accepísti in donum hómines, * ut étiam rebélles hábitent apud Dóminum Deum.
Thou hast ascended unto the top; Thou hast taken captives; Thou hast received gifts from men, even from those who do not believe that the Lord God dwells with us.
Amen.

Benedíctus Dóminus die cotídie; * portábit nos Deus salutárium nostrórum.
May the Lord be blessed every day! The God who has so oftentimes saved us will make our way prosperous.
Our God is the God who has the virtue of saving; unto the Lord, unto the Lord belong the issues of death.
Verúmtamen Deus confrínget cápita inimicórum suórum, * vérticem capillátum perambulántium in delíctis suis.
But God will break the heads of His enemies, the proud brows of those who walk in their iniquities.
Dixit Dóminus: “Ex Basan redúcam, * redúcam de profúndo maris,
The Lord said, "I will bring them back from Bashan, and I will bring them back from the bottom of the sea;
that thy foot may be dipped in blood, and that the tongue of thy dogs may also have its share of enemies.
Vidérunt ingréssus tuos, Deus, * ingréssus Dei mei, regis mei in sancta.
They saw Thy entrance, God, the entrance of my God, my King, who dwells in the sanctuary.
Præcédunt cantóres, † postrémi véniunt psalléntes, * in médio iuvénculæ tympanístriæ.
In front marched the princes, associated with the singers, in the midst of the young girls who played the tambourine.
“In ecclésiis benedícite Deo, * Dómino, vos de fóntibus Israel.”
Bless the Lord God in the assemblies, thou who come from the springs of Israel.
Ibi Beniámin adulescéntulus ducens eos, † príncipes Iúdæ cum turma sua, * príncipes Zábulon, príncipes Nephtháli.
There is Benjamin, the youngest, in holy transports; there are the princes of Judah, their leaders; the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali.
O God, command Thy power; Established, God, what Thou've done amongst us.
A templo tuo in Ierusálem * tibi áfferent reges múnera.
In Thy temple in Jerusalem, kings will offer Thou gifts.
Íncrepa feram arúndinis, † congregatiónem taurórum in vítulis populórum: * prostérnant se cum láminis argénti.
Rebuke the wild beasts of the reeds, the troops of bulls, and the flocks of the peoples, to drive out those who have been tried like silver.
Díssipa gentes, quæ bella volunt. † Vénient optimátes ex Ægýpto, * Æthiópia prævéniet manus suas Deo.
Dispel the nations that want war. Ambassadors will come from Egypt; Ethiopia will hasten to stretch out its hands to God.
Regna terræ, cantáte Deo, psállite Dómino, † psállite Deo, qui fertur super cælum cæli ad oriéntem; * ecce dabit vocem suam, vocem virtútis.
Kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; praise the Lord, praise God, who rises unto the highest heaven, unto the east. Behold, He is going to give His voice a mighty luster.
Tribúite virtútem Deo. † Super Israel magnificéntia eíus, * et virtus eíus in núbibus.
Give glory to God about Israel. His magnificence and strength appear in the clouds.
Mirábilis, Deus, de sanctuário tuo! † Deus Israel ipse tríbuet virtútem et fortitúdinem plebi suæ. * Benedíctus Deus!
God is admirable in His saints; the God of Israel will give His people power and strength Himself. Blessed be God!
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Dixítque ad me: "Ego sum Iesus Nazarénus, quem tu perséqueris."
r. Deduc me in sémitam mandatórum tuórum, allelúia, quóniam ipsam vólui, allelúia. * Inclína cor meum in testimónia tua, allelúia, allelúia, allelúia. v. Avérte óculos meos, ne vídeant vanitátem; in via tua vivífica me. * Inclína. v. Glória Patri. * Inclína.

Salvum me fac, Deus, * quóniam venérunt aquæ usque ad guttur meum.
Save me, O God, for the waters have entered my soul.
I am buried in a deep mud, where there is no consistency; I went down unto the bottom of the water and the flood overwhelmed me.
Laborávi clamans, raucæ factæ sunt fauces meæ; * defecérunt óculi mei, dum spero in Deum meum.
I tired myself out screaming, my throat was hoarse; my eyes have been exhausted, whilst I wait for my God.
Multiplicáti sunt super capíllos cápitis mei, * qui odérunt me gratis.
They have become more numerous than the hairs on my head, those who hate me without cause.
They have become strong, my enemies who persecute me unjustly; I had to pay for what I hadn't taken.
O God, Thou knowest my folly, and my sins are not hidden from Thou.
Non erubéscant in me, qui exspéctant te, * Dómine, Dómine virtútum.
Let not those who hope in Thou be ashamed for my sake, O Lord, Lord of hosts.
Non confundántur super me, * qui quærunt te, Deus Israel.
Let them not be confounded about me, those who seek Thou, God of Israel.
Quóniam propter te sustínui oppróbrium, * opéruit confúsio fáciem meam;
For it was for Thee's sake that I suffered reproach, and confusion covered my countenance.
extráneus factus sum frátribus meis * et peregrínus fíliis matris meæ.
I became a stranger to my brethren, and a stranger to my mother's sons.
Quóniam zelus domus tuæ comédit me, * et oppróbria exprobrántium tibi cecidérunt super me.
For the zeal of Thy house has devoured me, and the insults of those who reviled Thou hast fallen upon me.
Et flevi in ieiúnio ánimam meam, * et factum est in oppróbrium mihi.
I have afflicted my soul by fasting, and it hath been made a subject of reproach.
Et pósui vestiméntum meum cilícium, * et factus sum illis in parábolam.
I have taken a hairshirt for my garment, and I have become their fable.
Advérsum me loquebántur, qui sedébant in porta, * et in me canébant, qui bibébant vinum.
Those who sat at the door spoke against me, and those who drank wine mocked me with their songs.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Ego vero oratiónem meam ad te, Dómine, * in témpore benepláciti, Deus.
But I pray to Thou, Lord. This is the favorable time, O God.
In multitúdine misericórdiæ tuæ exáudi me, * in veritáte salútis tuæ.
According unto the greatness of Thy mercy, hearken unto me, according unto the truth of Thy promises of salvation.
Éripe me de luto, ut non infígar, † erípiar ab iis, qui odérunt me, * et de profúndis aquárum.
the raging waves do not overwhelm me; let not the abyss swallow me up, and let the well not close its mouth on me.
Exáudi me, Dómine, quóniam benígna est misericórdia tua; * secúndum multitúdinem miseratiónum tuárum réspice in me.
Hearken unto me, O Lord, for Thy mercy is all sweet; behold upon me according unto the abundance of Thy bounties.
Et ne avértas fáciem tuam a púero tuo; * quóniam tríbulor, velóciter exáudi me.
And do not turn Thy face away from Thy servant; forasmuch as I am in anguish, hearken unto me quickly.
Accéde ad ánimam meam, víndica eam, * propter inimícos meos rédime me.
Be attentive to my soul, and deliver it for the sake of my enemies.
Tu scis oppróbrium meum * et confusiónem meam et reveréntiam meam.
Thou knowest my reproach, and my confusion, and my shame.
All those who persecute me are before thee; my heart expects insult and misery.
And I waited for someone to grieve with me, but no one did; and that someone would console me, but I found no one.
Et dedérunt in escam meam fel * et in siti mea potavérunt me acéto.
And they gave me gall for food, and in my thirst they quenched me with vinegar.
[Fiat mensa eórum coram ipsis in láqueum * et in retributiónes et in scándalum.
[Let their table be before them as a net, a just punishment and a stone of scandal.
Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cease to behold, and bow their backs forevermore.
Effúnde super eos iram tuam, * et furor iræ tuæ comprehéndat eos.
Pour out Thy wrath on them, and let the fury of Thy wrath seize them.
Let their dwelling be desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in their tents.
Forasmuch as they persecuted him whom Thou smote, and added unto the pain of my wounds.
Add iniquity to their iniquity, and let them not enter into Thy righteousness.
Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and let them not be inscribed with the righteous.]

Deus, in adiutorium meum intende
God, help me
Domine, salva nos, perimus (Mt 8, 25).
Lord, save us, we are perishing (Mt 8:25).
Deus, in adiutórium meum inténde; * Dómine, ad adiuvándum me festína.
God, come to my aid, Lord, quickly to my aid.
Confundántur et revereántur, * qui quærunt ánimam meam.
Let them be ashamed and confused, those who seek my soul.
Let them retreat and blush those who desire my destruction.
Convertántur propter confusiónem suam, * qui dicunt mihi: «Euge, euge».
Let them go back forasmuch as of their shame, those who say, "Ah, Ah."
Let all those who seek Thou rejoice and rejoice in Thou. Let them say unceasingly, "God be magnified," those who love Thy salvation.
Ego vero egénus et pauper sum; * Deus, ad me festína.
I am destitute and poor; O God, hasten unto me.
Thou art my helper and my deliverer; Lord, tarry not.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Psalmus 70 (71)
Psalm 70 (71)
Domine, spes mea a iuventute mea
Lord, my hope when I was young
Spe gaudentes, in tribulatione patientes (Rom 12,12).
Joyful in hope, patient in trial (Rom 12:12).
In te, Dómine, sperávi, * non confúndar in ætérnum.
In Thou, Lord, I have placed my hope; may I never be confounded!
In iustítia tua líbera me et éripe me; * inclína ad me aurem tuam et salva me.
In Thy righteousness, deliver me and save me! Incline thy ear unto me and help me!
Esto mihi in rupem præsídii et in domum munítam, * ut salvum me fácias,
Be unto me an inaccessible rock, to which I can evermore retire.
quóniam fortitúdo mea * et refúgium meum es tu.
Thou hast commanded me to be saved, for Thou art my rock and my fortress.
My God, deliver me from the hand of the wicked, from the hand of the iniquitous and cruel man.
Quóniam tu es exspectátio mea, Dómine; * Dómine, spes mea a iuventúte mea.
For Thou art my hope, Lord the Lord, the object of my trust since my youth.
It is on Thou that I have relied since my birth, Thou who brought me out of the mother's womb: Thou art my praise forevermore!
Tamquam prodígium factus sum multis, * et tu adiútor fortis.
I am a wonder unto the crowd, but Thou art my mighty refuge.
Repleátur os meum laude tua, * tota die magnitúdine tua.
May my mouth be full of Thy praise, may it daily exalt Thy magnificence!
Ne proícias me in témpore senectútis; * cum defécerit virtus mea, ne derelínquas me.
Do not cast me back unto the days of my old age; unto the decline of my strength does not abandon me.
Quia dixérunt inimíci mei mihi, † et, qui observábant ánimam meam, * consílium fecérunt in unum
For my enemies conspire against me, and those who spy on my soul consult amongst themselves,
saying, "God has forsaken him! Continue it; seize it; there is no one to defend it! "
Deus, ne elongéris a me; * Deus meus, in auxílium meum festína.
O God, depart not from me; my God, make haste to help me!
Let them be confounded, let them perish, those who want my life! Let them be covered with shame and reproach, those who seek my ruin
For my part, I shall evermore hope; all thy praises, I will add new ones.
Os meum annuntiábit iustítiam tuam, † tota die salutáre tuum: * quæ dinumeráre nescívi.
My mouth will declare Thy righteousness, all day long Thy favors; for I do not know the number of them.
Véniam ad poténtias Dómini; * Dómine, memorábor iustítiæ tuæ solíus.
I will say Thy mighty works, Lord the Lord; I will recall Thy righteousness, Thine alone.
Deus, docuísti me a iuventúte mea; * et usque nunc annuntiábo mirabília tua.
O God, Thou hast taught me from my youth, and to this day I proclaim Thy wonders.
Et usque in senéctam et sénium, * Deus, ne derelínquas me,
Until such time as the day of old age and white hair, O God, forsake not me,
donec annúntiem bráchium tuum * generatióni omni, quæ ventúra est.
so that I may make known Thy strength unto the present generation, Thy power unto the generation to come.
Poténtia tua et iustítia tua, Deus, † usque in altíssima, qui fecísti magnália: * Deus, quis símilis tibi?
Thy righteousness, O God, reaches to heaven, Thou who does great things—O God, who is like Thee?
Quantas ostendísti mihi tribulatiónes multas et malas; † íterum vivificásti me * et de abyssis terræ íterum reduxísti me.
Thou who have caused us many and terrible trials. But thou shalt restore us to life, and from the abyss of the earth thou shalt bring us up.
Multiplicábis magnitúdinem meam * et convérsus consoláberis me.
Thou shalt raise up my greatness, and anon Thou shalt console me.
Nam et ego confitébor tibi, † in psaltério veritátem tuam, Deus meus; * psallam tibi in cíthara, Sanctus Israel.
And I will praise Thee unto the sound of the lute, I will sing of Thy faithfulness, O my God, I will sing to Thee psalms on the zither, Holy One of Israel.
Exsultábunt lábia mea, cum cantávero tibi, * et ánima mea, quam redemísti;
Rejoicing will be on my lips when I sing unto thee, and in my soul, which thou hast delivered.
And my tongue every day will declare Thy righteousness, for they will be put to shame and they will blush, those who seek my destruction.
Amen.
Psalmus 72
Psalm 72
Cur iustus vexetur
Reason why the righteous are harassed
Blessed is the one for whom I will not be an occasion for scandal.
How good God is to those who are pure in heart!
My feet were almost shaken, my steps almost reversed,
quia zelávi super gloriántes, * pacem peccatórum videns.
forasmuch as I have envied the wicked, when I behold the peace of sinners.
For death seems to forget them, and their wounds do not last.
They have no share in the labor of mortals, and they are not smitten like other men.
Wherefore pride has seized them; they are covered with their iniquity and ungodliness.
Prodit quasi ex ádipe iníquitas eórum, * erúmpunt cogitatiónes cordis.
Iniquity comes out as from their fat; they have abandoned themselves unto the passions of their hearts.
Their thoughts and words have been naught but malice; they have uttered iniquity loudly.
Posuérunt in cælo os suum, * et lingua eórum transívit in terra.
They opened their mouths against Heaven, and their tongues roamed the earth.
That is wherefore they sit high up, and the high water does not reach them.
And they said, How does God know? And does the Most High know about it?
Ecce ipsi peccatóres et abundántes in sǽculo * multiplicavérunt divítias.
Behold at those sinners who abound in everything in this world: they have acquired new riches.
Et dixi: “Ergo sine causa mundávi cor meum * et lavi in innocéntia manus meas;
And I said, In vain have I purified my heart, and washed my hands amongst the innocent,
et fui flagellátus tota die, * et castigátio mea in matutínis.”
since I have been afflicted all day, and chastened in the morning.
If I had said, "I will speak in this sense," I would have condemned the race of Thy children.
I thought of penetrating this secret; the difficulty was great before me,
donec intrávi in sanctuárium Dei * et intelléxi novíssima eórum.
until such time as I had entered the sanctuary of God, and understood what their end would be.
Verúmtamen in lúbrico posuísti eos, * deiecísti eos in ruínas.
Verily, these are snares that Thou hast set before them; Thou overthrew them just as they were rising.
Quómodo facti sunt in desolatiónem! * Súbito defecérunt, periérunt præ horróre.
How did they fall into desolation? They disappeared suddenly; they have perished forasmuch as of their iniquity.
Velut sómnium evigilántis, Dómine, * surgens imáginem ipsórum contémnes.
Like the dream of those who awaken, O Lord, Thou shalt reduce their image to naught in Thy city.
Quia exacerbátum est cor meum, * et renes mei compúncti sunt;
Forasmuch as my heart has been inflamed, and my loins have been altered,
I have been reduced to nothingness, and plunged into ignorance.
Ego autem semper tecum; * tenuísti manum déxteram meam.
I have become before Thou as a beast of burden, and yet I am evermore with Thou.
In consílio tuo dedúces me * et póstea cum glória suscípies me.
Thou held my right hand, and led me according to Thy will, and received me with glory.
Quis enim mihi est in cælo? * Et tecum nihil vólui super terram.
For what is there for me in Heaven? and what have I desired from Thou on earth?
Defécit caro mea et cor meum; * Deus cordis mei, et pars mea Deus in ætérnum.
My flesh and my heart have failed, O God, who is the God of my heart, and my portion for eternity.
For behold, those who depart from thee will perish; Thou hast resolved to destroy all those who prostitute themselves by distancing themselves from Thou.
As for me, it is my happiness to cleave to God, to put my hope in the Lord God;
ut annúntiem omnes operatiónes tuas * in portis fíliæ Sion.
to publish all Thy praises at the gates of the daughter of Zion.
Amen.

Lectio
r. Hymnum cantate nobis, alleluia; * Quomodo cantabimus canticum Domini in terra aliena? Alleluia, alleluia. v. Super flumina Babylonis illic sedimus et flevimus, dum recordarémur tui, Sion. * Quomodo. v. Gloria Patri. * Quomodo.
