In diébus illis: misit Heródes rex manus, ut afflígeret quosdam de ecclésia. Occídit autem Iacóbum fratrem Ioánnis gládio. Videns autem quia placéret Iudǽis, appósuit apprehéndere et Petrum – erant autem dies Azymórum – quem cum apprehendísset, misit in cárcerem tradens quáttuor quaterniónibus mílitum custodíre eum, volens post Pascha prodúcere eum pópulo.Et Petrus quidem servabátur in cárcere; orátio autem fiébat sine intermissióne ab ecclésia ad Deum pro eo. Cum autem productúrus eum esset Heródes, in ipsa nocte erat Petrus dórmiens inter duos mílites vinctus caténis duábus, et custódes ante óstium custodiébant cárcerem. Et ecce ángelus Dómini ástitit, et lumen refúlsit in habitáculo; percússo autem látere Petri, suscitávit eum dicens: “Súrge velóciter!” Et cecidérunt caténæ de mánibus eíus. Dixit autem ángelus ad eum: “Præcíngere et cálcea te sandália tua!” Et fecit sic. Et dicit illi: “Circúmda tibi vestiméntum tuum et séquere me!”Et éxiens sequebátur et nesciébat quia verum est, quod fiébat per ángelum; æstimábat autem se visum vidére. Transeúntes autem primam custódiam et secúndam venérunt ad portam férream, quæ ducit ad civitátem, quæ ultro apérta est eis, et exeúntes processérunt vicum unum, et contínuo discéssit ángelus ab eo. In thses days: Herod the king set his hands, to afflict certain of the Church. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And seeing that it pleased the Jews, he added to apprehend Peter also. And it was the days of the Azymes. Whom when he had apprehended, he cast into prison, delivering him to four quaternions of soldiers to be kept, meaning after the Pasch to bring him forth to the people. And Peter indeed was kept in prison. But prayer was made of the Church without intermission unto God for him. And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. And behold an Angel of our Lord stood in presence: and light shined in the house: and striking Peter's side, he raised him, saying: Arise quickly. And the chains fell from his hands. And the Angel said to him: Gird thee, and put on thy shoes. And he did so. And he said to him: Put thy garment about thee, & follow me. And going forth he followed him, & he knew not that it was true which was done by the Angel: but he thought that he saw a vision. And passing through the first & the second watch, they came to the iron gate that leadeth to the city, which of itself opened to them. And going out, they went forward one street: and incontinent the Angel departed from him. And Peter returning to himself, said: Now I know in very deed that our Lord hath sent his Angel, and delivered me out of Herod's hand, & from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

It is truly meet and just, right and salutary, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto Thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God.
Quia nos beáti apóstoli Petrus et Paulus tua dispositióne lætifìcant: hic princeps fídei confiténdæ, ille intellegéndæ clarus assértor; hic reliquiis lsræl instituens Ecclésiam primitívam, ille magister et doctor géntium vocandárum. For by Thy providence we are gladdened by the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul: the one the foremost in the confession of the faith, the other its illustrious interpreter; the one establishing the primitive Church from the remnant of Israel, the other the master and teacher of the Gentiles to be called. Thus, by diverse counsels, gathering together the one family of Christ, they are united in a single crown, venerated throughout the world.
