On the Spiritual Meaning of Lent
Sequens præfatio dicitur tempore Quadragesimæ, præsertim vero in dominicis, quando non est dicenda alia præfatio magis propria.
This preface is recited during Lent, especially on Sundays, when no other proper preface is used.
Vere dignum et iustum est, æquum et salutáre, nos tibi semper et ubíque grátias ágere: Dómine, sancte Pater, omnípotens ætérne Deus: per Christum Dóminum nostrum.
Quia fidélibus tuis dignánter concédis quotánnis paschália sacraménta in gáudio purificátis méntibus exspectáre: ut, pietátis offícia et ópera caritátis propénsius exsequéntes, frequentatióne mysteriórum, quibus renáti sunt, ad grátiæ filiórum plenitúdinem perducántur.
Et ídeo cum Angelis et Archángelis, cum Thronis et Dominatiónibus, cumque omni milítia cæléstis exércitus, hymnum glóriæ tuæ cánimus, sine fine dicéntes:
Verily, it is right and just, equitable and salutary for us, evermore and everywhere, to give thanks unto thee: Lord, Holy Father, eternal and almighty God, through Christ our Lord.
for thee deign to grant Thy faithful, each year, the opportunity to await the sacraments of Easter to purify their souls in joy; so that, through greater devotion to prayer, fraternal charity, and participation in the mysteries through which they are reborn, they may attain the fullness of the grace of the children of God.
Wherefore, together with the Angels and Archangels, with the Thrones and Dominions, and with the entire host of the heavenly army, we sing unto thee a hymn of glory, saying without end:
